5 | I Wanna Be A Runner

"Amelia, get up. You get to run today." I hear Minho's voice. "Stop trying to joke with me." I mumble rolling over. "I'm not playing around. Get up." He shakes me now waking me up all the way. "Wait, really?" I ask rubbing my eyes. "Yes, let's go." He tells me and I rush to go run. After running around the maze for the whole day, it was time to head back to the Glade before the doors close. "Have fun?" Minho asks a as we jog behind Ben. "So glad to run around then help patch up the Slicers." I laugh as we back into the Glade and I see Chuck with a new Greenie. "Hey, Chuck. New Greenie, huh? How does it feel to be promoted?" Ben asks Chuck as we jog pass him. "Feels great, Ben." Chuck smiles at him. "Enjoy that feeling, Chuck." I laugh still following the other two.

When I was no longer needed I went back to do what ever really. "How's the new Greenie?" I ask walking up to Newt. "He was a runner and the most curious one yet. Gally had to shove him away from the doors because he was getting to close to them before they closed." He catches me up on the new guy. "Huh, he's going to be a tough one." I say watching him with Chuck. "You gonna sit at the bonfire tonight or go sit and think away from everyone?" He turns to look at me. "I don't know, probably sit and watch everyone." I tell him the truth. "Amelia, Dave needs stitches this time." Clint shouts making me jog over to the hut. "Dave, you're killing me. Watch where you hit." I say getting things set up. Both Jeff and Clint said I was better with stitching up the Gladers so they always called me.

As it got dark out I sit and watch as they set the bonfire a fire and start chanting Gladers as we get out drinks. I watch the guys mess around as I drink laughing at them. "What do you say Missy?" Gally looks over at me alone in the ring. He was one who never got pushed out of the circle. "I'll go easy on you." He laughs and so do other boys. "I don't need you to go easy on me." I get up walking into the circle. "For the hell of it... I'm betting on Amelia." Carl laughs as I stretch. "Thanks for believing me." I sigh. "I believe in you, Mia." Chuck puts his thumb up.

"You know the rules. I try to push you out of the circle. You try to last longer than five seconds." I just stare at him. "I know the rules Gally. Can we start now?" I ask him like he was dumb. "Go easy on her." Zart watches so I decide to act like I was scared. "Don't worry." Gally rushes at me and I slide to the side making him almost go out making the guys whoa. "You know you don't run out right?" I smirk at him as the boys laugh.

I could tell Gally wasn't happy with the boys laughing at him, so he rushes at me getting a hold on me but I wrap my leg around his taking him down with me. I knew I couldn't push him out so I was just trying to last long. "Hi." I laugh as I was on top of him and he groans rolling us over so he can get up and drag me towards the ring. I pull down on his arm and use my muscles to flip myself to get out of his grip. It works so I jump up and push him out of the circle making everyone cheer.

"Come on, we are getting you a drink for that." Jeff pulls me with him and Clint so we walk around. "And we got two and half med-jacks, Clint, Jeff, and Amelia." Newt says to the Greenie as we walk pass him but I stop to walk with Newt. "They spend most of their time bandaging up the slicers. Amelia is always fixing Dave up if she's not helping out the Runners. Amelia, meet the new Greenie." Newt smiles at me. "Greenie, this is Amelia. Our only girl in the Glade. She was here before a group of us came up together." Newt introduces me to him.

The Greenie just nods his head at me, "What if I want to be a runner?" Newt chuckles. "Have you listened to a word I just said? No.. no one wants to be a runner. And besides, you got to get chosen." Newt explains to him before the Greenie gets knocked into. "What do you say, Greenie? Want to see what you're made of?" Gally asks him making the guys chant Greenie. I watch with my arms crossed as Gally acts like the asshole his is to the Greenie. I was impressed when the Greenie got Gally down on the ground. In the competition with Gally, the boy suddenly remembers his name after hitting the ground hard. "Thomas. I remember my name. I'm Thomas!" He shouts and we all congratulate him before hearing a Griever outside the walls in the maze.

"What the hell was that?" Thomas asks. "That, my friend, was a Griever." Gally tells him. "Don't worry. You're safe here with us. Nothing gets through those walls." He adds before Alby tells us it's time for bed. "Welcome to the Glade, Thomas." I give him a head nod heading off to bed. "Wait, why are you the only girl?" He stops me. "Don't know? I've been here for three years and never seen another girl come up in the box. You should get some sleep. Seems like you had a rough first day." I give him a smile again heading off to bed.

"I'm sorry but I have to do this to you, I have no choice. I want to help save everyone. It's the only way to find a cure." I wake up breathing heavy trying to calm down. Getting ready for the day I see Alby and Thomas at the wall so he can carve his name into the wall. I stretch my body because the hammock isn't the best thing to sleep in for years. "No running today I see." I turn to look at Gally. "I wonder why?" I eye him. "Because I said only once a week you can run, right. We came up with that agreement for Minho since he wouldn't stop asking for the past month. You know Newt preferred that first agreement, where you could only run if an emergency runner was needed." He walks up next to me as I turned away from him.

"I would have loved it if you all agreed to let me just be a runner like I was three years ago." I smile up at him batting my eyes. "Not going to work on me. Only does with Minho." He gives me a fake smile making me pout. "Did in the beginning." I mumble but he hears me. "That's when we were younger and since you were the only girl we let you get what you wanted." He pats the top of my head. "I'm still the only girl. Nothing changed." I laugh. "Do you see any other person with boobs up here with us? If so tell me because I'm tried of you boys." I look around then at him. "You tired of me?" He asks as we walk to Winston's cook shed following everyone who was getting up for breakfast and a long day of work.

"At times, yes. Like how you treated Thomas. I get he was and is difficult from past Greenies but still." I explain to him. "Needs to know his place. Also at least you said at times." Gally smiles at me. "You know I over heard that Dave has a crush on you." He bends down to my height. "Most of the boys have had a crush on me, I'm the only girl here." I laugh. "I know, and know a lot of guys that do." He looks around. "Morning Amelia." Chuck gets in line then looks at Gally. "Good morning Chuck." I give him a smile. Since Chuck came up in the box, he's told me getting to know me he looked up to me as an old sister.

"Have you ever got any crushes on any of the guys?" Gally asks me. "Hmm? I wouldn't call it a crush more like I find some guys cute." I slightly lie. "Who?" He smirks as we get our food. "None of your business." I walk away with him and Chuck follows me. "How do you talk to him without arguing at times?" Chuck asks. "I don't know. It's a decent conversation until we start to get on each other's nerves." I say eating as Thomas joins us. "Morning Thomas." I say to him and he gives me a head nod.
