9 | Open Doors

We all go to the door and look in before all the other three open. Thomas starts to give orders before Grievers show up. I go with Chuck and Winston to board up the Council hall. As we all rush we can hear the other Gladers screaming outside. I help the guys barricade them go outside to see the rest, "Come on!" I shout as they come running in.

They lock the door and we all try to bend low and move around trying to avoid the Griever. Suddenly it's gets a stick making the some of the roof fall down on us. "Chuck!" I see that he doesn't move in time and one grabs him. I was the first to grab him and the others grab him too. "Chuck don't let go." Thomas tells him. "No shit!" He yells back. We struggle to pull him them Ably starts to hit the tail. As we get Chuck back I wrap my arms around him, "Thanks Alby." Chuck says as we see a tail grab him. Thomas goes to grab him but Alby is pulled away. Thomas then rushes out making us follow him. We see some things were on fire and everyone was gone. Gally marches over and punches Thomas in the face making us yell at him while he yells it's Thomas's fault. "Thomas what are you doing?" I watch him get ready to sting himself.

Chuck goes to get the other syringe like Teresa told him to do. We give it to Thomas and Gally decides to take over to be in charge. He orders to throw Thomas and Teresa in the pit to get banished at sundown. "Gally th-," He cuts me off. "You too." He says making me step back. "Excuse me?" I laugh. "You were the only girl up here for a long time. I bet you're part of it since she knew your name." He gets two guys to grab me. "Gally, this is ridiculous. Amelia?" Newt speaks up. "You have a choice. Join me or get banished with them." Gally tells everyone who was left as we get in the pit.

"I can't believe Gally." Minho says as him, Newt, and Chuck were at the door to the pit waiting for Thomas to wake up. "He threw you in there too." Minho shakes his head looking at me. "Because he's an asshole." I growl. "If I had something to do with the people who put is in here then how come shit is now happening and not at the beginning?" I sigh thinking back to those dreams or memories. "Hey, I know you don't." Newt looks me in the eyes as Thomas suddenly wakes up.

"This place... it's not what we thought it was. It's not a prison; it's a test. It all started when we were kids. They'd give us these challenges. They were experimenting on us. And then people started disappearing. Every month, one after another like clockwork." Thomas tells us what he remembers now. "Sending them up into the maze?" Newt says. "Yeah, but not all of us." Thomas tells us. "What do you mean?" I ask him. "Guys. I'm one of them. The people who put you here, I worked with them. I-I watched you guys for years. The entire time you've been here, I... I was on the other side of it. And so were you." Thomas looks at Teresa. "What?" She asks him. "Teresa, we did this to them. We did this to your sister." He looks over at me. "No. That can't be true." She looks over at me while I look at her. "It is. I saw it." He tells her.

"My dreams make sense now... When I had the feeling of drowning and I heard a girls voice, your voice, I'm sorry but I have to do this to you, I have no choice. I want to help save everyone. It's the only way to find a cure." I sigh looking at Teresa. "Why would they send us up if we were with them?" She asks Thomas. "It doesn't matter." He shakes his head. "He's right. It doesn't matter. Any of it. Cause the people we were before the maze they don't even exist anymore. These creators took care of that. But what does matter is who we are now and what we do right now. You went into the maze and you found a way out." Newt speaks up. "Yeah, but if I hadn't, Alby would still be alive." Thomas tells him. "Maybe. But I know that if he were here, he would be telling you the exact same thing. Pick your ass up and finish what you started. Cause if we do nothing then that means Alby died for nothing and I can't have that." Newt tells Thomas who agrees before we come up with a plan.

As they walk us to the doors they let me walk alone next to them because I said I wouldn't fight back. "Gally. It doesn't feel right, man." Winston speaks up. "Yeah, what if Thomas is right? Maybe he can lead us home." Jeff speaks up. "We are home. Okay? I don't want to have to cross any more names off that wall." Gally tells them. "You really think banishing us is going to solve anything? I know you're smarter than that Gally." I say making Dan grab me so he was holding both us girls.

"No. But this isn't a banishing. It's an offering." My eyes winded as Dan ties us up to the pole. "Are you listening to this? Why are you all standing there. He's crazy." Teresa speaks up. "You shut up." He tells her. "If you stay here, the Grievers are going to come back." She continues. "They're gonna come back, and they're gonna keep coming back until you're all dead." I add making him tell us to shut up. As the other Theo's go to tie Thomas up he jumps up and the other join us. Fry cuts out rope so we can all group together pointing our weapons at them.

"You're full of surprises, aren't you?" Gally asks. "You don't have to come with us, but we are leaving. Anyone else who wants to come this is your last chance." Thomas tells them which makes Gally say he's lying. "No, he's not because you're already scared. All right, we're all scared." I tell them. "But I'd rather risk my life out there than spending the rest of it in here. We don't belong here. Okay? This place isn't our home. We were put here. Okay! We were trapped here. At least out there, we have a choice. We can make it out of here. I know that." Thomas tells them all and Winston and Jeff were the first two to join us then a few others. "Good luck against the Grievers." Gally tells us and we run off.

As we get there Thomas tells us there was some Grievers. Before we get ready to go Thomas gives us a speech that we can do it. "All right, let's go!" We all start to run. With our spears we push at the Grievers to get it over the edge. Once we got one off we see two more coming at us, while we hold them back Teresa and Chuck run ahead. As Minho says the sequence pattern of the maze a Griever falls on him. "MINHO!" We all yell. I step forward bet Newt pulls me back as Jeff rushes at up to help but the Grievers gets him. "Jeff!" Winston yells. As we all back into the hole I finish the numbers, "Six, four, eight, three." I tell Teresa then the walls start to close in the Grievers. We then are in complete darkness for a few seconds before a door behind us opens.

We all pile out into a long tunnel hall and just walk it. "Seriously?" Fry asks as we come to a door with an exit sign. Thomas opens the door and we see some dead guys along with the alarms going off. "What happened here?" Winston asks as we keep walking. "So they were watching us. This whole time." Newt says as we look at monitors of the glade. Thomas suddenly makes a video play of a woman named Ava Paige.

In the video recording she explains that the planet has been devastated by a massive solar flare, followed by a pandemic of a deadly, incurable virus called the Flare that affects the brain of the afflicted. We learn that us Gladers appear to be immune to the virus. The learn that we were part of an experiment studying the way our brains worked as a resistance to the virus. At the end, the woman in the video shoots herself as the lab is being attacked by men with military-style weapons but dressed more like mercenaries.
