Chloe sighed deeply as her eyes flickered to the window of her hospital room and she locked eyes with Lee. He shot her a small smile as he stared at her, a look of concern etched on his handsome features. Her stomach churned with guilt when she noticed the look of deep longing on his face. From just one look, she could clearly see that he was desperate to be by her side, supporting her, but was trying to respect her decision for space. Even though she knew that she was hurting him, she was still struggling to be in his presence. Whenever he was near her, she could hear his words swirling around her head. It felt like she was being repeatedly punched in the stomach, the thought that the man she loved didn't find her desirable and had spent the whole of their relationship leading her to believe that he did. Her eyes misted with tears at the thought of how exposed she now felt and how sick to her stomach at the thought of ever having to undress in front of him again.
It had cut her to the bone when he'd suggested that she didn't care about their baby, particularly after everything that they had been through last time. Her mind wandered to when she'd lost their first baby and how Lee had accused her of not caring or grieving the loss of their child. Warm tears rolled down her cheeks as she heard his words on a constant loop in her mind.
She was snapped out of her thoughts when Lee walked into the room, hovering nervously in the doorway. He sighed deeply when he saw her quickly wiping away the tears that were rolling down her cheeks.
"I need to know that you are both okay Chlo." he muttered.
"The doctor is going to give me an ultrasound when he comes back with the blood results." she said quietly, gazing down at her wrist as she massaged it, not quite able to bring herself to make eye contact with him.
"How's your wrist?" he asked, his heart still breaking that she was being so distant with him. Despite the fact that he understood why she was upset with him, he couldn't help but wish that she would allow him to comfort her. He desperately wanted to hold her in his arms, to feel her soft heartbeat against his chest. To hold the woman that he loved with all his heart. He closed his eyes for a moment, sighing to himself when he thought about how it felt to watch her falling down the stairs, almost in slow motion.
"It's broken." she muttered, snapping him out of his thoughts.
"They are going to put a cast on it." she continued, trying to keep herself talking in an attempt to avoid the awkward atmosphere. Lee nodded slowly, his eyes fixed on Chloe as he perched beside her on the bed, his eyes flickering to her hands that were still in place on her lap. He carefully placed his hand on top of hers, longing to be close to her. Chloe glanced down at her hands when she felt Lee softly stroking her fingernails. Before she could stop herself she squirmed away from his touch, gasping in pain when she quickly moved away from his touch.
"Chlo." he whispered, his heart breaking a little as she moved away from him, her face contorting in pain.
"I don't know what you want from me." she muttered, resting her head against the pillow as the room began to spin once again.
"We really need to talk." he said quietly, trying to resist the urge to touch her. He was longing to reach out and stroke her cheek.
"I think we've said everything that we need to say." she said shortly, closing her eyes for a moment. Lee sighed to himself and reluctantly tore his eyes away from her. Despite the fact that he deeply regretted arguing with Chloe and the words that she'd overheard in the pool room, he couldn't understand why she was so closed off to him that she wouldn't allow him to explain. If only she would listen to him, he knew that he could fix things. But she seemed determined to push him away, even though he was desperate to try and fix things with her.
