Paula quickly hurried around the side of the bed, following Chloe's eyeline as she quickly assessed the situation. Her complexion slowly turned pale when she noticed the fresh blood stain on the sheets.
"I can't lose her!" Chloe screamed hysterically, causing Paula to jump.
"Firstly, you have to calm down, otherwise you'll increase your blood pressure." Paula told her gently. She carefully took Chloe's hand in her own, gently squeezing it in reassurance to try and calm her down.
"I'll go and get the doctor. I need you to keep calm and still okay." Paula said firmly, staring at Chloe until she looked her in the eyes. Chloe nodded slowly, calming down slightly as Paula smiled warmly at her.
"It's probably nothing to worry about, so don't panic." she told her as she quickly left the room, hurrying to find a doctor. As soon as Paula left the room, Chloe buried her head in her hands and burst into tears, loud sobs of anguish escaping her lips as she fought to control the intense fear that she was feeling. She knew that she had to remain calm, but she couldn't suppress the fear that something was going to happen to her beautiful baby girl.
"You can't leave me Freyja." she sobbed, every moment that she waited for the doctor to return feeling like an eternity.
"I need you too much." she whispered, closing her eyes and taking deep breaths to try and suppress the panic that she was feeling. The last thing she wanted to do was to make things worse for her baby. Her eyes snapped open when the door opened and Paula returned, quickly followed by Doctor West.
"So, you've had some bleeding?" he asked Chloe. She nodded slowly.
"Okay, I'll need to examine you and then we'll give you another ultrasound." he explained.
"Examine me....down there?" Chloe asked, her cheeks colouring at the thought of it.
"Yes, I need to make sure that your cervix is still closed." he told her. Chloe nodded slowly, her eyes fixed on her hands as she placed her hand on the top of her leggings, struggling to remove them one handed.
"Would you like me to help you?" Paula offered kindly. Chloe nodded, not quite able to bring herself to look them in the eye. Her hands shook as Paula carefully removed her leggings. She couldn't help but squirm in embarrassment when she carefully removed Chloe's underwear.
"Right, I need you to bend your knees and spread your legs." Doctor West told her, shooting her a small reassuring smile. Chloe reluctantly did as he asked, her cheeks colouring even further as she sat in front of the two of them, feeling completely exposed. Even though she knew that she had to do what was right for her baby, she couldn't help but wish that she didn't have to do this.
Her cheeks coloured even further as she gazed down at the doctor as he examined her. She closed her eyes and rested the back of her head against the pillow, gazing up at the ceiling lights, trying to take her mind off what was happening.
"I forgot to ask if you want me to fetch your fiancee?" Paula piped up, clearly trying to distract Chloe. She shook her head slowly, her eyes filling with tears as she thought about him.
"His name is Lee isn't it?" she asked.
"Yes." she replied, sighing to herself when she felt the tears that had filled her eyes, slowly flowing down her cheeks.
"He's in that famous band isn't he?" Paula asked, still trying to keep Chloe talking.
"He's in Blue. So is Duncan." she answered.
"They are going on tour again next year." she continued, quickly realising what Paula was trying to do, but going along with it, in order to keep her blood pressure down. Chloe knew that she needed to do whatever she could to help her baby. She quickly sat up, clutching her abdomen when she felt a sudden and intense pain. Chloe curled her toes, trying to control the pain that she was feeling. Doctor West frowned at her, watching her closely as her face contorted in pain.
