invisible

It's been a while since we've gone to our special place
The spot in the woods
Down the long twisty road past the center of the small town
Over the railroad tracks
past the deli with the faded red storefront
And the bank that still doesn't have an ATM
We were so excited when we came upon it
Pulling the car over into the flat spot under the arched oaks,
fallen branches,
and a ground cover of crispy amber leaves
"This is perfect!" you exclaimed
And I smiled
Taking in the smell of damp moss and the sound of the meandering creek
"It's magical," I answered back
While wondering if you would ever kiss me under these secret-keeping trees
"It's our spot." you declared
And in that moment, no one else existed but us.
We spent many hours in this secluded sanctuary
Eating Chick-fil-A
And sharing ooey-gooey calzone
And talking about whether I was a character in your movie
Or you were the star of mine
No one ever came upon us.
Cars sped down the road and
cyclists huffed up the steep incline
but we were invisible
The bluebirds and squirrels our only witness
I think time stopped in this spot
Our amorous adventures held hostage by our lunchtime rendezvous
This might just be where I fell in love
