Perception

I saw something in you that you couldn't even see yourself

You came to me broken, hurt and afraid

Telling me that everything that has happened to you

was your fault

and that you deserved it

The way she treated you was because you did something wrong

You took her emotional abuse and started to believe it

But I saw something more than surface smiles

I looked beyond the facade of niceties

into the darkness that lay below

And my perception never changed for the worse

it just grew stronger like my affection

every day that we got closer I saw tiny pieces of you blossom

I thought I was undoing what she did

and I would get so close!

But then, like a weathered tree limb you would snap

and we would be back to the beginning

you spewing cruel words to me that were likely the regurgitation of her words to you

the very things you criticize her about

you do yourself

acting the next day like it never happened

after all this, I still see you through rose-colored glasses

whatever you do or however you act

I am still the one by your side

reinforcing how great you are
