"Perhaps the most meaningful magic was not the kind that changed the world, but the kind that helped someone hold on to what mattered."

The sound of twigs snapping beneath their shoes made all four girls freeze.
For one ridiculous second, nobody breathed.
Katherine stood halfway down the steps of the Burrow with one hand clutched around the strap of the bag she was carrying, her eyes fixed on the darkness beyond the garden.
Ginny had stopped beside her.
Hermione was already holding her wand.
Pansy, who had been complaining about the cold for the last five minutes, had suddenly become very quiet.
They listened.
Nothing.
Only the distant rustling of leaves.
The faint hum of insects.
The occasional creak of the Burrow settling behind them.
Ginny slowly lowered the bag of crisps she had been holding between her teeth.
"Think we're safe?"
Hermione narrowed her eyes.
"Probably."
"Probably?"
"Would you rather I said definitely?"
"Yes."
"Then definitely."
Ginny grinned.
Katherine covered her mouth to stop herself laughing.
Pansy rolled her eyes.
"This is ridiculous."
Ginny looked at her.
"You're the one who nearly screamed when the garden gnome moved."
"It was dark."
"It was a gnome."
"It moved."
"They do that."
"It still shouldn't have."
Katherine finally laughed.
The sound escaped before she could stop it, and all three girls looked at her.
For a moment, Katherine simply stood there.
Laughing.
Actually laughing.
Not because someone had made a joke.
Not because she was trying to reassure somebody.
Not because she was pretending everything was fine.
Just because Pansy was arguing with Ginny about garden gnomes.
It was such a stupid thing.
And somehow that made it wonderful.
"Come on," Ginny whispered.
She pointed toward the shed.
"If Mum catches us, we're being disowned."
"She won't disown you," Hermione whispered.
"She'll disown all of us."
Pansy folded her arms.
"I've barely met your mother properly."
Ginny looked at her.
"Then you don't understand."
