"She was never meant to become only the moment we lost her."

____________________________

Draco Malfoy had never intended to become useful.

Useful was a dangerous word.

It suggested obligation.

It suggested expectation.

It suggested that somebody had discovered a talent you possessed and had decided that, from that moment forward, you belonged to whatever purpose they had imagined for it.

Draco had spent most of his childhood being useful to other people.

Useful to his father.

Useful to his family.

Useful to the Malfoy name.

Useful to Voldemort.

He had been taught from an early age that everything he did was supposed to serve a purpose.

There was no such thing as simply being good at something.

There was being good at something because it brought the family money.

Being good at something because it improved the family name.

Being good at something because somebody important had noticed.

Even friendship had once been tangled up in expectations.

So Draco had made a private decision after the war.

He would do absolutely nothing unless he wanted to.

Unfortunately, that decision lasted approximately three weeks.

Because on a wet Wednesday morning in Diagon Alley, Draco Malfoy found himself standing behind the counter of Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes with three ledgers, a cup of tea he hadn't asked for and Fred Weasley shouting at him from the other side of the shop.

"I told you that figure was right."

Draco didn't look up.

"It's wrong."

"It's not."

"It is."

Fred folded his arms.

"I've checked it twice."

"I've checked it three times."

"That doesn't make you more right."

"It does when I'm right."

Fred stared at him.

Draco finally looked up.

"What?"

Fred pointed at the ledger.

"You've been here twenty minutes."

"Twenty-three."

"And you've already found a mistake?"

"Four."

Fred blinked.

"Four?"

Draco tapped the page.

"Four."

Fred walked around the counter.

He leaned over the ledger.

"That's not a mistake."

Draco moved his finger.

"You ordered two hundred boxes of Fanged Frisbees."

"Yes."

"You received one hundred and seventy."
