Chapter Forty Eight
Even though BBD's house had looked very different to Aaliyah's on the outside:
It had looked a lot nicer on the inside:
Kind of like they had just arrived at a hotel.
No wonder people had always said that inner beauty had mattered more. Things had all made perfect sense now.
Tupac, Aaliyah and Lisa... or more specifically Francis, Shanice and Anastasia had just arrived at BBD's house, after claiming that they had worked for the National statistics.
They were going to ask them questions about crime... starting with DeVoe because he was the main suspect for Nate and Notorious's very tragic death.
They didn't say the main suspect bit... wanting DeVoe to go first because his name was last in the group name.
That didn't necessarily mean that he had to go last for everything because that bit wasn't true.
DeVoe didn't say anything as Tupac here had asked him all of the questions, with Aaliyah and Lisa discreetly recording the conversation in the meantime.
Tupac had sat on one corner whilst DeVoe had sat on the other.
Like Aaliyah and Lisa- Bell and Biv were standing up as well.
Luckily Biv and DeVoe had already known about the official statistics on crime and how people were coming around to ask them to fill a survey based on that.
So they weren't the least bit suspicious.
The conversation was long... but useful.
They could have used all of this against him.
"You gonna remove your damn sunglasses?"
"I have to keep my identity hidden," Tupac had explained. "You can't see our faces. You can only know our names."
Then they started.
Tupac: Whatcha think about crime? In general.
DeVoe: It's stupid and I don't get why people do it.
Look who's talking, Tupac really wanted to say but he didn't.
In fact, he just wanted to admit that he was Tupac right now and shoot him.
But A) he didn't have a gun.
And B) If he had killed DeVoe, then that was just as bad as DeVoe sabotaging the car.
Two wrongs didn't make a right- and hopefully DeVoe was the one who had done it as well.
The Ding Dong Scarily On High newspaper title was evidence but not evidence enough.
That was why they had had the effrontery to come here.
Tupac: Why do you think black people are more likely to be victims of crime... or if not then why do you think they fit the stereotype of what a typical criminal would be?
DeVoe had just looked at him blankly.
Then he became kind of annoyed.
DeVoe: You want me to answer all that?!
Tupac: You said you'd tell the truth and nothing but the truth. If you don't and someone finds out, then you would get a fine.
He wasn't wrong.
DeVoe sighed.
DeVoe: 'Cause we ethnic minorities, man. We're not always as flipping privileged as the ethnic majorities. But this all needs to stop. Black lives matter too.
Tupac: Hmm, yeah.
A lot of (fake) note taking then...
"You committed any crimes lately?"
DeVoe: What kinda question is that?! That's an invasion of privacy.
Tupac was just doing his job.
Plus it was on the questionnaire.
They weren't going to arrest him-they just wanted to know.
Tupac: Although, heads up- if you're acting so skeptical about the question then you're most likely hiding something, right? Not just you though, maybe. Perhaps even all of Bell Biv DeVoe?
Biv and Bell had oohed at that, with DeVoe telling them to shut up.
Tupac had showed him the questionnaire and the question was actually there.
DeVoe: Please. We're Bell Biv DeVoe. Not Hell With The Bros.
"Good one, bro!" Biv commented, with DeVoe completely disregarding him.
But then he opened up.
And if Aaliyah and Lisa hadn't started recording already then now was more or less the perfect chance to do so.
DeVoe: I did commit a crime lately, if you must know.
Tupac had stared at him blankly.
Tupac: And what was that?
DeVoe: I sabotaged Tupac's car...
DeVoe sighed.
Tupac had smiled a little bit.. but not widely enough for them to notice.
DeVoe was starting to think that these people were frauds though, because they were.
Tupac: And why the heck would you do something like that?
DeVoe: *lowkey shouting* And why the damn hell should I tell you that? You'll prolly finna use all this against me.
Tupac: I ain't gonna do that. I promise. Just explain what happened and we'll be okay.
And he hated breaking promises but Tupac had to do what he had to do.
