Buck couldn't help but looking at the red light over his head, tightening the steering wheel when his foot was playing with the pedal, making the jeep roar. The shotgun puffed.
-It's been red for two seconds; no need to be in a hurry, she mocked gently.
The driver swiveled facing her, wearing a dumb face.
-I'm not sure it's a good idea Madds, I mean...I betrayed 'em, especially Bobby, and I don't really think that getting diner to his wife's house, which appears to be the scariest police lieutenant of the entire state, is a good idea either. Don't tell her that, he corrected himself, knowing he probably ended up his life by speaking about her like that.
Maddie raised her eyebrows, saying, "What the hell are you talking about" and she pointed at the traffic light.
-It's green.
The firefighter continued his way out of Los Angeles and turned in a small neighborhood. He parked on the other side of the road and stared at his sister whilst she left the car. She leaned on the open window.
-Athena and Bobby asked you to come. If they didn't want you to come, they wouldn't have called after you; she reassured him showing him her biggest smile, meaning, "It's as you want, you shouldn't have played the fool, now it's too late." Get down now; we're going to be the lasts.
Buck rolled his eyes before switching off the car and picking up the wine on the backseat. At least, if he had to face the anger of Athena, he could be the one that brings the wine, hoping that at least one of his friends would be on his side. He recognized Hen and Karen's family car and Chim's, who apparently came by his own means after the shift in the district. He also saw Michael's car parked in the alley in front of the garage, probably a habit he kept from his twelve years of marriage with Athéna. Or maybe he planned to stay for the night. Anyway, Buck noted that he couldn't see Eddie's truck, and he wished he had shown up tonight. He wasn't here, and maybe it was because somehow, he heard about Buck coming and decided not to show up, even though it's been three days since he came back at the firehouse.
Maddie knocked at the door, glancing at her little brother, who seemed nervous and couldn't help but pull on the lower part of his soft coat. They heard a distinctly female voice in a whole noisy room, and seconds later, the owner opened the door, a glass of wine in hand. Athena smiled at the 9-1-1 dispatcher and embraced her. When she saw her brother standing backward, she arched.
-You're planning on staying on the porch Buckley? She sent out aggressively but with some joy in it.
Evan apologized and walked in, uncomfortable, and when he walked to her, she stopped him, putting her hand on his chest.
-You thought you'd get away that easy? She started.
-Hum...He worried.
The woman police squinted before looking at Maddie, who couldn't help but smile when looking at her brother's in comfort.
-And my hug? She finally declared, her arms wide-open.
Buck frowned, surprised and puffed, relieved, feeling kind of dumb and ashamed being Bobby's wife's easy target. He hugged her without having even thought about it, Athena's hug made him feel well, and even beyond, he felt renewed. He walked into the house, excited, and Maddie stayed at the door, standing next to the cop.
-One thing I know for sure, the black woman said, it's definitely the Buck we all know!
Maddie nodded, amused by her brother's innocence. They both decided to join the room where everyone stood, speaking about some interesting things and Athena vanished in the kitchen.
