"It's about Kuina"
You feel your heart sink.
"It's about why Kuina is no longer with us"
You feel anger rising in your body while you drop your bags. "WHAT, YOU KNEW ALL ALONG AND YOU DIDN'T SAY ANYTING?!"
Chishiya gives you a warning look "Let me finish."
You sigh as you pick up your bags and nod.
"You know I was the killer in the game, right?"
"Mhm"
"And as the killer, I had to kill a certain amount of people to get out alive myself."
"SO YOU KILLED KUINA?!"
"JEEZ LISTEN TO THE WHOLE STORY FIRST GOD DAMN" Chishiya shouts back. You are shocked. This is the first time you hear him scream.
"I'm sorry, go on" you say, looking at the ground embarrassed, knowing that you've already broken your promise twice.
Chishiya clears his throat. "I had to kill 17 people in total. So I could let 6 people live. My plan was to leave you, Arisu, Usagi and Kuina alone and hunt on the others. I finished my job after 15 minutes. I saw from the top floor of the building that Usagi and Arisu were already outside, but I couldn't find you and Kuina. You were the last two who were left over and I wanted to help. But I couldn't be in two places at once. So I decided to go to Kuina first because, let's be honest, you are better at puzzels than she is. When I found her, she had already used two of the three tries. Her puzzel a very difficult math problem that you could solve in 4 different ways. Every way had a different outcome. So it was basically gambling. We checked everything to make sure we hadn't overlooked anything. But after a while, the time started to run out so Kuina just chose one..."
He stops and looks in front of him and then back at you. His face showed no emotions, but his eyes said enough.
Your heart was shattered, knowing what he is going to tell you next.
"But she chose the wrong one." He looks forward again. "Before I could do anything, the lazer fired from above."
It falls silent. You look at Chishiya not knowing what to say. You are trying to process all the information. Just the thought that Chishiya had to see all that. A person he has been friends with this whole time, got shot by a lazer right in front of his own eyes. You feel the tears coming up.
"Why didn't you tell us right away?"
"Before she pressed the button she said that if she died, I had to tell you that she had already gone home so that it looked like she had ran away. She didn't want you to be distracted by her death. She wanted you to focus on yourselves and on the game."
Tears are rolling down your cheeks. You remember the hug she gave you just before you separated for the game. You never thought that that would be the last time you saw her.
You break. You drop the bags and kneel on the ground. You never got to say goodbye, you never said how much you cared about her.
She was always there for you on The Beach. She was kind of an older sister to you. The best older sister anyone could ever wish for. She was there for you when you wanted to talk about your frustrations, she was there for you to take care of your wounds when you had them, she was there for you when someone bothered you, she was there for you when you got bored, she even stood up for you when Chishiya made a nasty comment about you. She was always there for you, but you never thanked her for that. And now, it's too late.
She's gone.
While you are crying, you throw out all your emotions. Anger, sadness, disappointment, frustration, everything. You have never cried that hard before.
Chishiya standing next to you, has no idea what to do. He never had to comfort anyone in his "friend" group before. He kneels next to you and puts his arm around you awkwardly.
After a few minutes you calmed down a bit. You look at the sky through your tears to see that it has changed to a starry sky. Then you look at Chishiya who has kept his arm around you all this time. "Thank you." you mutter to Chishiya while wiping your face dry. You get up and get your bags again. You take a deep breath and you walk back to the apartment.
Once there, Chishiya tells the same story to Arisu and Usagi.
After they recovered from the shock, you grab some water and the skittles you found at the supermarket. The four of you sit in a cirkel with a candle that Usagi somehow lit and a bowl of skittles in the center of the circle.
You all bring back nice and happy moments that you have from Kuina. Moments like: "Remember when she had too many shots at the bar and then went all out on the dance floor? We all had to drag her out of there before she started doing things she would regret later."
After a while the candle has burned out and the skittles were gone. One by one you slowly fell asleep.
Hi guys! I hope you enjoyed this chapter. It was a bit sad but I wanted to clear up to story about Kuina. Otherwise it would hang around the whole time. - Iris
