Nonbinary America~

When I tell you I had to do so much research, I shit you not my search history is filled with different aspects of nonbinary: nonbinary names, how to style a nonbinary outfit, what not to say to people who are nonbinary, do nonbinary people wear makeup.

Like, I was so scared of offending y'all that my computer crashed with all my references images XD

If I did offend anybody, please let me know. I haven't written a nonbinary character before, so I used nonbinary characters for a little extra help (Asher from Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeast, Double Trouble from She-ra, Kazi from Dragon Prince, Stevonnie from Steven Universe, etc.)

America's new name is Mika, which is actually a unisex name for Native Americans (specifically Sioux) and means "rabbit" (which I found out by going onto six different websites).

Growing up with Native America was fun!

Catori loved all her children, even the pale ones. She often taught her children many different tasks, as their father had not been in the picture. So, she was the one to teach America how to do all the "manly duties" as England would say. But, she didn't shy away from the feminine lessons, either.

America loved weaving, art, dancing, and gardening. England caught him a few times teaching his other colonies how to do certain dancing, plant flowers, and sew blankets. It impressed France, Spain, and England that Alfred had an array of skills. But, England also constantly told his male colonies that "women's work" is to be done by women.

The phrase confused the ever-loving shit out of America, he didn't understand what England meant. Arthur told him that he was proud of his skills, but that it was weird for a man like him to do such a thing. Alfred explained that he had always done both and didn't understand why he couldn't do those things.

England called them gender norms, what a man and woman are supposed to do and what they are made to do. A man didn't cook or clean, he hunted and trained. Now, even though Alfred could do both roles perfectly, England did try to instill this idea of gender.

It never worked and Alfred continued to do both roles fluently, especially after becoming independent and raising his children. But, if he were being honest with himself, the ideas of gender were disgusting to him. He could never count how many times he saw a female hunt better than a man, or how many times he ate a man's cooking that was far superior to his wife's. These "gender norms" England had instilled in him were total bullshit.

Alfred, using his white male privilege, fought beside every movement about gender. This, in particular, came to the restrictions of what women could wear. The social norms like that women couldn't wear pants because they were too masculine were ridiculous! Alfred always supported anything that made somebody feel like themself.

While on this journey, he discovered something about himself.

He was non-binary.

He liked wearing all types of clothes, he liked wearing jewelry and makeup, and he liked not giving a fuck and slaying every outfit he tried on.

Of course, he kept this part of him secret from everybody.

(Pronouns switch now from 'he/him' to 'they/them' for Alfred)

Until~

Alfred had been out in New York City, wearing their favorite outfit. It was a pretty loose, white turtleneck tank crop top, black jeans with a few chains, and white Vans. They also had on black hoop earrings and three cartilage studs on both ears. They had a bright red backpack, covered in pins of anime figures and the nonbinary flag. Their lips had a slight sheen to them thanks to some lip gloss, and their eyes were currently being framed by their red wire glasses.

They were hanging out with a few friends they had met at NYC Pride last year: Maria, who was a lesbian, and her partner Jin who was pan, Derek who was ace, and River who was also nonbinary. All of them had been walking around Central Park when a certain trio made itself known.

"Alfie?!" Alfred stopped in their tracks and gulped. Their friends noticed the sudden change and looked back. There was another blonde that looked almost exactly like Alfred, an albino, and a small man with black hair.

"Alfred! It is jou!" the albino yelled with a smile as he ran over. He attacked Alfred into a hug and laughed, "ve've been trying to call jou for hours! Vhat's up?"

"G-Gilbert, I-"

"Gil, for Christ's sake, you're aboot to suffocate him!" Canada ripped Prussia off of him. The smaller man came up to the group with a small smile on his face.

"Arfred-san, you rook interesting. I have never seen you wear stuff rike that before," he quirked his head, "it rooks kinda strange," Japan noted.

"Um, excuse me but who the hell do you think you are?!" Derek spoke up. He got in front of Mika, "Mika is the best dressed here, and they always wear the nicest clothes!"

"They?" Prussia asked, "Alfred, vhat ze hell does this guy mean?" River walked in front of them.

"Stop saying 'Alfred'! They don't like being called that! It's Mika,"

"River, it's cool. They don't know,"

"What don't we know, Alfie?" Canada asked. Mika took a deep breath, glancing back at their friends. Jin and Maria gave America a thumbs up, while Derek and River gave simple nods.

"I-I'm nonbinary, ok? I don't like being held to or associated with one gender. I use they/them pronouns and my name is Mika," they bit their lip and waited for a response. Canada simply hugged America and kissed his temple.

"You could've told me, Al-Mika. I'm your brother, I would never ever leave you," Prussia nodded, agreeing with Canada.

"Ja, I think jou look hot as hell in those clothes. As for the name, it may take time to get used to it. But, I vill alvays try and never leave jou either," Japan came up to them and bowed.

"I am so sorry I offended you, Mika-san! I did not rearize it hurt your feerings!" Japan looked to Mika and smiled softly, "I do think you rook strange, but you arso rook nice," Mika giggled and took a deep breath.

"Thanks, guys, you're all the best!" they hugged the group, "but, let's keep this between us for now, ok?" the trio nodded profusely and Gilbert smirked.

"Of course! Ve already forced jou to come out right now! Ve von't let jou do it again until jou're ready," Mika nearly cried and nodded, hugging everyone closer again before gesturing to their other group of friends.

"Wanna join us?" Mika asked, smiling brightly. The trio nodded and the rest of the group spent the day shopping and relaxing. When Mika got home, Matthew had decided to room with his... Well, he didn't know exactly what to call Mika, since they didn't identify with gender would it still be ok to call them his brother? (this is a legitimate question, I couldn't get a straight answer from Google, hehe no pun intended).

Matthew and Mika sat on the small balcony with blankets and a big mug of hot cocoa each. Matthew put his arm around Mika, smiling as they saw a shooting star.

"So, you're birth name? Guess Mama knew what she was doing when she named you her little rabbit," Matthew laughed as he received a light elbow to his stomach.

"Yeah, do you think I'm weird?"

"Not in the slightest, my little Mika,"

Alfred smiled and the two continued to stargaze.
