Chapter 57 (April)

I walked down the hallway through the hospital. Bailey followed behind me. I approached the nurses station in the ICU wing. "Can any of you tell me where I could find a Dr. Shepherd?"

A nurse looked up from his computer. "Yes he's the last room at the end of the little hallway."

I thanked him and walked down to the last room. Through the window I could see Meredith sitting in a chair while resting her upper body on Derek's bed. They were both asleep. I carefully opened the door, trying not to scare either of them. I looked at Meredith and tapped her on the shoulder. Her eyes opened and she looked confused when she saw me. When she became more  conscious of the world around her she immediately got up and hugged me. "April Kepner. It's been so long."

She was still hugging me. It was weird. I never really thought she was a hug type person. She pulled away and tried to fix her messed up hair as best she could. I stared at her in a way where she knew my exact thoughts. "What is it? It's bad isn't it." she asked.

"It's not good." I replied handing her his chart.

She looked through it thoroughly. She began to speak as she kept looking. "Liver failure. Yea that's not good."

"Derek is now at the top of the UNOS list. We are searching every hospital in the area for a liver." I explained.

"That's good and all but livers don't just show up everyday. It could take months to find one." she replied.

"Well that's true, we are just praying we can find one soon."

"How king does he have? With no liver? How much longer can he go?"

Bailey chimed in. "Maybe a week, two at most."

She sat in her chair and pulled out a tissue from her pocket. She wiped the tears forming in her eyes. I looked at the floor and then it hit me. "Wait I might have an idea."

"What is it?" Bailey asked.

"Okay so I've seen lots of cases where siblings or close relatives will donate parts of their liver or kidneys to another family member in need."

"Yes I've actually had that done. My father's liver was the same way and I donated to him. It did work." she replied.

"If we are going to do this we need to get all of Derek's family here to get tested to see if they are matches."

"We can't do that. None of them expect Amelia knows he's alive. We start with Amelia and if she isn't a match then we proceed with the rest of the family." she commanded.

"Okay. Let's go find Amelia." I said.

Meredith got up to come help, but Bailey insisted she stay with Derek in case he woke up. We decided to split up. I walked down the ICU hall and into the elevator. I made my way down to the E.R.

As I was walking I didn't notice where I was going and bumped into someone. "Oh my gosh I'm so sorry."

Without even looking to see who it was I helped them pick up the pile of files they were holding. I grabbed a handful and stood back up. I locked eyes with the other doctor. "April?"

It was him. It was Jackson. I dropped the files and ran. I did not want to deal with him. That was one thing I did not want to do today. I ran into an empty on call room and shit the door. I caught my breathe. I heard the door mob twist and my heart skipped a few beats. Jackson stepped into the poor lit room. "April? What are you doing here?" he asked.

"I have a case. An important one actually. Derek's."

"Oh okay. Look did I do something wrong? After the whole thing with Matthew we just haven't really talked."

"Talk about what Jackson? Talk about how my husband who it took forever to be with died after he was in a car accident not even a year after we were married. Or maybe we should talk about how his mother is trying to get legal custody of his kid and is constantly up my ass telling me I'm a horrible mother." I screamed.

"April..." he began, "It's been six months and you haven't even acknowledged me. You drop Harriet off at my house and you don't say a word. I just want to make sure your okay."

"Jackson, I'm okay....I'm always okay."

"April, I know you, your not okay. I see the way you look at me, at Harriet when you drop her off. You in pain. You need external help." he explained.

"Maybe I do but I don't have any time for that. I'm constantly busy. I have toddlers to deal with and I have arrogant bosses at my new job and I have mother in laws breathing down my spine."

I sat on the bed and put my hands in my face. I could feel him sit down beside me. He put his arms around me and let me cry in his arms. He let go and looked at me. "Look I have some time off now. Do you want to get a cup of coffee? We can just talk . Just the two of us."

I smiled. "I would, but I'm very busy."

My phone beeped. I looked down. It was a message from Bailey. It read:

Found Amelia. She's getting tested right now. It's backed up so go get some lunch for yourself and meet me back in the ICU in about an hour.

I smiled and looked back up at Jackson. "Actually my schedule cleared up for about an hour. Let's go get that cup of coffee."
