"Come in!" I yelled as I fixed my hair.
The door swung open and I could see the snow begin to fall. I was slightly disappointed to see Meredith walk in. She was carrying multiple bags of groceries. I felt bad since April had already left stuff. She walked over to me and kissed me on the cheek. "It's getting bad out there. Are you sure Amelia can still come?"
"I haven't heard otherwise." I replied.
She walked over to the kitchen. Zola and I followed her. "Wow what smells so good?" she asked.
"We made homemade mac and cheese." Zola smiled.
"We?" Meredith asked peaking her head out of the fridge.
"April and I. She came by with tons of recipes."
"Oh so that explains all the food in the fridge." Mer laughed.
"She may have brought over more than her cooking skills." I said.
Mer rolled her eyes and put the rest of the food she bought in the fridge. I went into the living room and turned on the T.V. All that was on was the weather and how we were going to get record inches of snow in the next few hours. Zola sat down beside me and looked at the T.V. "It's crazy how it's spring and it's snowing."
"I wish I could say the same thing, but after everything your mother and I have been through, nothing seems crazy."
She looked at me slightly puzzled. The door rang and she immediately got up to answer it. I heard footsteps enter the house and Zola's voice. "Hey Bailey, hey Ellis!"
The two small children ran to the kitchen to greet their mom. I turned of the T.V. and found my sister and Link by the door wiping their wet feet on the rug. "Hey is it bad out there?"
"Yea the snow is definitely falling hard." Link laughed.
They took their coats off and headed towards the kitchen. Bailey and Ellis both sat at the table as Zola talked to them. When they saw me enter, Ellis ran over to me and hugged me. "Hi your back again."
I kneeled down to get on her level. I looked her straight in the eyes. "Yup I'm here, and never leaving."
She hugged me again. "Leave him alone will ya. Don't scare him away." Bailey screamed.
Ellis let go and stuck her tongue out at Bailey. He got up and ran after her. They ran out the kitchen. Zola followed them yelling at them to stop.
Amelia laughed as she poured herself a glass of soda. Link, who was holding the baby car seat, sat it down and took Scout out. He held him tight and bounced him up and down slowly to keep him calm. Amelia noticed I was staring at him. "Hey Link, could you let Derek hold Scout." she suggested.
"Sure, if that's alright with him." he said.
I nodded and he handed me the baby. Scout was calm in my arms. He made no noises what so ever. He extended his hand and grabbed my nose. He had a strong grip. After a few minutes, Amelia took him and placed him in the portable crib in the living room.
The kids found their way back to the kitchen shortly after and Meredith sat them down at the table. She gave each of them a plate of food. We sat together in silence for a while, that is until Ellis talked. "So Mr. how long do you plan on staying because I don't want to have to share a room with anymore people."
I smiled. "Oh honey I don't need my own room. It's fine."
"So then where will you sleep?" Bailey asked.
I froze. I don't really want to give them any ideas, so I panicked and blurted something out. "I'll sleep in Amelia's room."
"You don't want to sleep there trust me. Amelia snores. Plus she sleeps with Link who takes up the whole bed." Ellis said, twirling her hair.
I laughed and responded. "Your right that doesn't sound like a good idea...Maybe I'll just sleep right next to you in your bed."
"You better not come near my bed. My mom is a surgeon and she can rip your insides out."
"ELLIS." Mer yelled.
"Sorry Mommy."
We laughed around the table for awhile and eventually it was getting late. Amelia packed everything up and got Bailey and Ellis ready. Zola stayed behind and helped clean up. "Hey why does Zola get to stay." Ellis whined.
"Well she's older than you and she has to do something here." Amelia lied.
"When can we move back in?" Bailey cried.
"Soon." she promised.
Link walked back in, his whole body covered in snow. "Hey everything okay?" I asked.
"I wish. I could barley shovel the snow off the porch let alone the car. The roads are a mess and I can't even see five feet in front of me." Link explained.
Meredith walked in. "How about you guys just spend the night here?" she suggested.
"That would work out perfectly. I mean everything is here. Pjs, food, toothbrushes." Amelia said.
"Yes stay, we will have fun." I smiled.
The kids cheered when they heard the news. Ellis kicked her shoes off and ran upstairs. The other two kids followed. Amelia took Scout for a diaper change and Link went to see if he could unload some stuff out of the car.
I walked over to the living room window and stared outside. Mer walked behind me and wrapped her arms around my torso from behind. I turned to face her and she smiled. The snow was so breath taking, so surreal. I cupped her face and kissed her not too hard, but also not to soft. She hugged me and leaned on me. In those few seconds, the world didn't seem so scary and everything bad that had ever happen seemed like a bad dream.
