Dear Derek

Chapter 58 (Amelia)

I walked out of the O.R. and removed my scrub cap. I walked over to the board and erased my name. "Lost em didn't you?" a voice said behind me.

I turned around and saw Bailey looking at me. "Yea. We got to her too late. By the time we opened her up, she was too far gone."

"Amelia I need to speak with you." Bailey said as I was heading to lay down in an on call room.

I nodded and we walked to the ICU. "Bailey what's going on? Why are we in the ICU? Do you need a consult?" I bitterly asked.

I was so tired and I just wanted to lay down. "Look."

She pulled my coat to an ICU room door. I peered through it and saw Meredith laying next to the person on the bed. It took my sleepy brain a few seconds, but I realized it was Derek. "Oh my God. Bailey what happened?"

I went to open the door, but she stopped me. "Look Derek's liver  is failing and he needs a transplant. UNOS says he is at the top of the list, but we don't think he will last that long. It could take months to find a match."

"Why are you telling me this. Why are you telling me my brother is going to die?" I cried.

"We think you can help." she replied.

My tears suddenly stopped. I pulled a tissue out of my pocket and wiped them. "What do you mean I can help?"

"As you know the liver regenerates and people can give other people parts of their liver and then their liver will grow back."

"So basically you want to test me to see if I'm a match to donate part of my liver to Derek?" I asked, trying to follow along with her.

"Yes exactly." she smiled.

I looked at Derek in the bed. He was holding Meredith's hand. Still looking at them I responded to Bailey. "Okay I'll do it. If it means Derek gets to live."

I walked upstairs to get tested. Bailey followed me. When we go there, the line was huge. People filled up almost the whole hall. Bailey told me to wait here while she tried to convince a nurse that they needed to be jumped to the front of the line. No luck. We found two seats and sat down. It was going to be awhile. I pulled out my phone and texted Addison. She was the only one who I felt I could talk to in this situation.

To Addison:
Hey. I'm at the hospital and I'm freaking out...

To Amelia:
What happened? Is a patient bothering you? Are you pregnant again Amelia?

To Addison:

No Addie I'm not pregnant... Look Derek has just been admitted again... he was brought in with a failing liver, they think i'm the only chance in saving him.

To Amelia:
Oh my gosh, Derek is back in the hospital??!! Okay listen I'm catching the next flight to Seattle. I'll be there soon.

To Addison:
Addie you don't have to come all the way out here. I just need advice, if I'm not a match to give Derek a piece of my liver, what am I supposed to do?

To Amelia:
I don't know Amelia... but what I do know is I'm coming to see you.

To Addison:
Okay. I'll see you soon. 💗

To Amelia:
See you soon.💗

I put my phone down and realized it was almost our turn. I noticed Bailey was dozing off in the chair. After about five minutes it was our turn.

Bailey grabbed the test from the nurse and we went inside a room. Bailey drew my blood and walked out the room. She handed the blood to an intern and told her to make sure it got done first.

I sat in the room and looked through my phone. I saw pictures from when Derek first came home from L.A. and the hospital almost one month ago. It was crazy to think he had been with us for that long. As I was looking through my photos a message from Link popped up.

To Amelia:
Hey, what time do you want me to drop the kids off? They are really excited to be with you and get out of this boring hotel.

THE KIDS. I forgot that today was the day the kids were supposed to reunite with their dad. I quickly texted him back.

To Link:
Link listen something happened. Derek is in the hospital and he's not doing well. I do not want those kids to see him like this. I will let you know what's happening.

To Amelia:
What happened? Wasn't he fine this morning when you left?

To Link:
He was, but apparently Mer woke up to him coughing and throwing up blood. They determined his liver is failing and I'm sitting here in a small room waiting to see if I can give him some of my liver....

To Amelia:
Wait so now you might be getting surgery??? I need to be with you. I'll drop the kids off at Owen's or something.

To Link:
No Link you need to stay with them. They can't keep switching between households and parents. It's not good for them, plus I don't want Owen to have to take care of Scout. He already has a baby and a toddler to deal with. Just stay with them please.

To Amelia:
Fine, but what if you have to get surgery?

To Link:
Don't worry, Mer is here and Bailey is too. I'm in the best of hands and you know it. I love you so much and I'll talk to you soon.

To Amelia:
Okay I love you too.

I put my phone away and heard a slight knock at the door. "Come in." I hollered.

"Your Dr. Shepherd right?" a girl asked.

"Yes...and who are you?"

"Oh my names Dr. James. I'm one of Bailey's interns. She had to step out for a second, but she told me to give you the news of your results."

"Okay tell them to me." I said, closing my eyes and breathing deep.

"Congrats Dr. Shepherd you are a successful match." she smiled.
