ALEC ROMANO
Radio silence.
I had heard nothing from Amara since she left and I was getting worried. Not because I didn't trust Esther, but because she's been through so much in the last 24 hours and I'm afraid she might do something stupid.
"Esther, call me back when you get this, it's important." I rushed out, hanging up the phone as I saw Yas round the corner.
She was carrying two coffees, her head looking from side to side looking down the empty hallways. "Hey." She smiled, handing me a coffee.
I took it from her, the warmth heating up my cold hands.
"Hi." I mumbled, "Who was on the phone?" She asked me.
I looked down, "Just Esther. She hasn't gotten back to me." I shrugged. Yas sighed, tapping the top of her cup, "Are you not thirsty for coffee?"
"Hmm?" I quipped, snapping back into my reality, "You're usually ecstatic when it comes to coffee, are you okay?" She tried to joke, putting the back of her hand against my forehead.
I shrugged, "Yeah, no sorry. I'm just- worried about everything."
She frowned as I placed the coffee on the table, "Do you want to talk about it?"
The only thing that came to mind was Amara. I want to talk to Amara about it.
But I had treated her like dirt on my shoe that I doubt she'd talk to me!
My stomach churned unevenly and I rubbed my tired eyes, "Come on Alec, lets talk." She sighs.
She touches my bicep and then sits down, patting the seat beside her, "No I-"
"I can't. I have to go, I'm sorry." I mumble quickly, slipping out of the hallway before leaving through the doors. My phone buzzes and I pull it out, frowning slightly when I see it's Giovanni.
"What?" I said, hailing a cab with my hand, "Where are you going?" His voice says.
I get into the cab, pressing the phone to my shoulder while I clip in my seatbelt, "How do you know I left?"
"I can see you." He says, and I can hear a smirk in his voice, "I'm going to find Amara. I have a bad feeling."
Giovanni sighs, "Okay. But be careful, let me know if you need anything."
I hang up the phone, rubbing my cold hands together to try and create some warmth as I stare out into the grey world.
I hadn't even noticed the cab had pulled up to my house until he demanded I pay him. I threw a couple twenty's before climbing out, noticing the car Esther had used was parked perfectly in the driveway.
The house was warm when I got inside, a small shiver going down my spine from the change in temperatures.
"Esther?" I called softly. "In here dear." She called back. I followed her voice to the living room where she was sitting in the living room, the TV on a cooking channel while she had a ball of yarn in her hands.
"Why didn't you call me back?" I asked, stretching my arms, "You worry too much." She smiled. I couldn't help but smile back, "Where are the boys?" I asked.
She points down the hallway to their rooms and I nod, seeing the doors closed, "And- Amara?" I hesitate.
She nods to her room, in which the door is also closed.
"Thank you for bringing them."
I tread lightly down the hallway, glancing down at the carpet every so often. I wish the floor would open up and swallow me whole. I wouldn't have to deal with anything then.
I suck in a breath, raising my fist to knock before hesitating.
Just do it, Alec. My inner self says and I shove it down, knocking three times. I wait for a response and hear a tiny voice mumble a short 'come in'. I open the door and go inside, closing it behind me.
The first thing I notice is the lack of heat. The windows are closed but the ground seems to be cold. I shove my hands into my pockets, vulnerability creeping up my neck.
"Can we talk?" I ask her. I hear shuffling in the bathroom and then the light flicks off, revealing Amara. I smile at her cozy clothes. Sweatpants and a grey sweater with bug fuzzy socks. Her hair is pulled loosely into a ponytail.
"What's up?" She sniffles, sitting on the bed. I follow her movements, the bed dipping between us. "I- wanted to apologise. Again. For the way I've been acting."
She shrugged, "It's fine." She said.
"No." I shook my head. "It's not fine. I've been a massive jerk, and I swear, I am so sorry."
She finally looks at me. Her nose is red and her eyes are puffy. "I don't know why I've been under so much stress. I never get this bad, but my stress is no excuse for the way I've been acting toward you."
I take a shaky breath, "You are the kindest, most caring, most beautiful girl ever, Amara. And you deserve more than any asshole like me."
I feel my throat close and look down, trying to blink away any tears threatening to leave, "I hope you can forgive me." I whisper.
I get up to leave, but her voice stops me, "Yeah, you have been an asshole, Alec."
Even though she's angry with me, when she says my name I get a feeling.
"And you're right, you have treated me like shit. And I've been blaming myself for every little thing to the point, I don't feel anything." She whisper-yelled, pointing at me. Her voice cracked.
At this point, I wanted to gather her into my arms and kiss the ever living shit out of her, but she'd probably slap me, "But I still choose to forgive you."
I was shocked by this, "Why?"
She shakes her head, holding it in her hands, "I don't know. Probably because I think I'm falling in love with you."
