AMARA CABOT

I was hardly awake when I heard footsteps thundering up the stairs.

I peeled one eye open and my neck had a kink in it as I reached my hand up to rub it away. It was then that I remembered Alec's presence.

"Alec." I rushed out, hearing the footsteps get louder. He stirred in his sleep, eye's still closed firmly, "Alec wake up!" I pushed myself off him, rolling onto the hard floor and landing with a thud. I groaned, rubbing my sore leg.

The wooden floor creaked as voices were heard.

"Alec, seriously. You need to wake up." I said frantically, pulling the blankets away and folding them in a rush, shoving them into the corner.

"Amara, would you stop fussing. Come back." He said, his arms reaching out to grab me, "Alec I don't know about you, but I don't really want to get caught with whoever is outside that door right now."

Almost like he snapped out of his trance, one eye popped open before the other did too and he quickly arose, giving me a once over before tidying the bay window.

He mumbled something in Italian under his breath before smoothing out his clothes.

Just as the door had opened, I took a step back from Alec, my heart beating sporadically, "I'll let you know as soon as I found out." Alec said to me. I was confused for a second, until Giovanni and Marco stepped into the room, also looking confused.

"You two are up early." Marco said, glancing at his watch, "Yeah, we um- talked." I smiled, "But I'm hungry so, I'm gonna go have breakfast." I said awkwardly, slipping my hands into my hoodie pocket, excusing myself from the tension in the room.

My mind was spinning with a million thoughts.

I fell asleep with Alec.

Alec fell asleep with me.

We slept together, in a way. I didn't mind it, actually. It was nice, comforting. He's really warm too, even if we were on a tiny bay window made of wood.

I slept better than I thought I would, even if I do have a headache that's thumping in the middle of my head.

"Hey sis, didn't see you in your room, where did you go?" Finn asked me as I entered the kitchen, shoving a spoonful of captain crunch into his mouth.

I snorted, standing on my tip-toes to reach the bread, "I got up early. I had to talk to Alec, how are you feeling? Haven't pulled any stitches?" I glared, popping two pieces into the toaster.

It was funny to me, how Alec and his family were these big scary mafia leaders yet he has captain crunch cereal sitting on his bench.

Then again, he did ask me to come back to bed with him, so he can't be that scary.

"What are you smiling at?" Finn smirked.

My smile vanished and I glared at him, "Nothing. Eat your cereal."

"Could it have anything to do with a certain brunette boy?"

"What, you and your brother? Always." I rolled my eyes, "Where is Joey, by the way."

Finn shrugged, "I don't know. Haven't seen him." He shrugged, eye's focusing back to his cereal.

"You haven't seen him? Is he not in his room?"

Finn shook his head and I briskly walked down the hall, nerves settling in my stomach.

He could just be with Esther, or on a walk, in the bathroom, with one of the boys. There's many possibilities, I'm just overthinking.

But I can never been too sure.

"Joey?" I called, hoping to see his mop of brown hair when I entered his room, "Joey, are you here buddy?"

Nothing.

"Joey?" I said louder, looking in the bathrooms.

Silence.

I went into full panic mode as I ran about the house, almost running over Marco as he yelled at me to slow down, "Where's Joey?" I said, eyes wide.

"What do you mean? He's in his room, isn't he?" Marco mimicked my frantic gaze and I shook my head, "I've checked this entire house, Marco. He's not here." Tears finally fell and Marco gripped my shoulder, "Okay. I'll signal Alec, you grab Finn, meet me in the living room in five, okay?"

I nodded my head, heading back into the kitchen, "Woah, Mar why are you crying?" Finn asked me, washing his bowl in the sink, "Joey's not here." I whispered and Finn's eyes widened, "What?"

"He's not in the house. I checked everywhere."

Finn took off in a sprint while I followed after him, "Where is he?" I heard my brother shout, "Where's Joey? Where is he?" He screamed.

I pulled Finn off Alec as he flattened out his crumpled shirt.

I'm glad one of us got the time to change. I was still in my pyjamas from last night.

Hope fluttered in my fingertips as Alec, Marco and Giovanni glanced between each other. But then their looks became hardened. Alec cleared his throat, "We- don't know."

My shoulders sank and I felt the color drain from my face. I felt dizzy and light headed, "Security cameras?" I mumbled, "Wiped." Marco said.

"Front door cams, stairway cams, hallway cameras- can't you give me anything?" I screamed, "Fucking anything?"

Giovanni looked down at his feet. I felt bad for screaming at them, but this is my family on the line, "I told you that if anything happened to this family, I would be the first to go. And you told me you'd protect them." My throat swelled up in fear, "You promised me." I whispered to Alec.

His face contained a pained expression before his phone rang. He cut off his intense stare with me and swiped his thumb across the home button.

The room went silent as he pressed the speaker button.

"Hello?" Alec spoke tentatively, hearing nothing from the other line.

"I have the boy." A thick, New York accent spoke, causing rage to seep into my veins, "Bring me the girl and you get the boy."

Finn's chest was rising and falling while his fists were clenched by his side, "Where?" Alec said in a firm tone, like this was routine, "The docks, you have two hours. Come, alone."

"Is he okay?" I blurted out, earning a hard glare from Marco, "Is my brother okay?" I hissed down the phone, snatching it off Alec.

The phone was silenced, "... For now."

My blood ran cold.
