Boom

Fiona's POV
I flung back and landed on the ground, luckily my garden cushioned my fall. Emma was at the base rubbing her head and checking Claire for cuts and Bronwyn was right next to me.
Hugh.
I ran to the house. My home for what felt like the last millennium was on fire. It was burning. With Hugh and Victor inside. I fell to my knees and sobbed. My Hugh was gone, he was gone and I'd never see him again. The love of my life. I turned to Claire, ready to throw her in there myself, but she was crying into Bronwyn's skirt. The rain was doing it's best to kill the fire but it had done little damage.
"Oh my bird! Hugh!" Cried Millard.
I looked to see him coming around from the backside of the house covered in ash. He was limping a bit and was missing part of his left sleeve and pant leg but looked otherwise unharmed. I ran to him and nearly choked him in a hug.
"You're alive." I whispered.
"Can't get rid of me that easy." His laughter turned into coughs.
"Let's get you down lad." Millard helped him get into the grass and I just crouched down there with him, completely stunned.
"You saved me Hugh!" Cried Claire, she threw her arms around him and squeezed, I saw him wince and I held his right hand and kissed his cheek. The twins nodded and patted him on the back.
"Thank you all, but what now?"
Everyone's smiling subsided, what do we do now?
"Find a new loop?" Enoch asked, still holding Hugh and I's luggage. I took the bags from him and patted him in the shoulder, he tried to shrug it off but I saw him smile.
"No, we don't leave here with out Miss Peregrine!" Olive stamped her foot, which made her look immensely childish. But then again she was, either way she was right; we can't leave without our ymbryne.
My eyes started to water because of the smoke, some were coughing.
"First we need to get away from the smoke." Jake said.
"What about the hollow?"
"He's dead, I can't feel him anymore."
Relief washed through me.
"Can you walk?" Bronwyn asked Hugh.
"Yes I can." But when he got in he winced when he put pressure on his left ankle. I put his arm around my shoulder and Millard did the same thing.
"I'll be your legs." Millard said.
He looked goofy walking, it looked like he had his arm around me and then his other one extended like a bird in flight. So bizarre. One might even say peculiar.
...
We walked for a long time before Emma broke the silence.
"Look," she whispered. We all turned to see a boat a little bigger than the daytime fairy, the smoke stacks gave away its location.
"That must be the wights." Horace said.
"No Horace, it's the ice cream man. Of course it's them, moron!"
Horace and Enoch started to banter before Emma cut them off.
"Shut up and listen!"
But there was nothing to hear.
"We need a plan."
I looked at Emma and Jake like they were crazy, but even I found myself nodding.
We huddled in together, and then a plan was made.
Bronwyn and Millard were to distract the wights, if things turned hairy they had the twins (pretend they have their movie powers) Hugh was to stay out with the little ones, he grumbled about it but knew it was best. Horace and I were to drag the paddle boats and hide them so we can use them as an escape. Emma and Jake had the most important task, rescue Miss Peregrine.
"What about me?" Cried Enoch.
"Um make some sort of bird call if things start failing and we need to get out."
"That's a job for a pansy, have Horace do it!"
"I beg your-"
"Enough!" Emma hissed.
They rolled their eyes and got to work.

Hugh was a sitting duck, there was no way Olive or Claire could help him if thing went bad, and Enoch was in the lighthouse practicing bird calls.
"Go love, I'll be fine." I shook my head. He cupped my face with his good hand and I leaned into him.
"It's not bad, I feel better already. Look, only a few scratches." He was right, but I didn't want to leave him.
"Do it for Miss P."
I sighed in defeat and kissed him. Everyone will know about us now but who cares? I heard Olive and Claire giggle and I blushed.
His face turned more serious,
"Be safe." I nodded and joined arms with Horace.
...

We dug the muck out of our boats and dragged them one by one to the shore. Horace put our bags in there, putting them on the benches to save space. It's a miracle we still had them at all.
"I can't wait to change clothes." Horace looked disgustingly at his own self and looked like he was holding in tears. I tried to sympathize with him, I really did, but all I wanted to do was roll my eyes and laugh. So I did. He laughed too. We laughed until we were blue in the face.
Then we heard the gunshot.
If only that good feeling could have stayed.
