Austin's P.O.V

One year later

Flashing lights blinded me as I made my way over to the car; security keeping away the paparazzi and screaming fans. I had taken selfies with most of them; it always made me feel guilty knowing that I had forgotten about a fan. It had been a crazy year for me, and I had come so far.

It wasn't long until my first album, 'The Secret' was going to be dropped and I was nervous. Things had been lonely as I was always surrounded by adults, but Dave my bodyguard always kept me company. He was like an older brother, and on rare occasions my management had allowed my friends to fly out to visit me.

But the strange thing was that whenever I brought up Callin, how she was, or why she hadn't come, the atmosphere changed immediately and someone would change the subject. It was my fault that Callin and I drifted, I never called or texted her back because I didn't want to hurt her. I had kissed her and left and made everyone lie to her, and it annoyed me everyday.

The thing was that I had never let go of Callin. It killed me to leave her in the state she was in. And I had the photograph of Callin and I before prom framed and on my desk, next to the picture of Alex and I.

"Are you ready for the tour?" Dave said, snapping me back to reality.

"Yes, it's going to be great!" I said excitedly.

The tour was looking great at the moment. I had great supporting acts and very talented dancers. And after school finished, Alex, Robert and Zach would be joining me for the summer on the road.

"Well you deserve it, you have come so far Austin." Dave patted my back.

Then he left me alone again to take a phone call, leaving me staring at the picture and wondering if I had made a mistake shutting her out. Trying to forget about her. Some days I would think that I had made the right decision but other nights, I just wanted to call he, apologise, explain why I was wrong. But every time I got close to calling her, a voice of doubt would fill my head.

She's better off without you...

It was always right. Callin was better off without me. I was unreliable. I had left her when she needed me. A vibrating phone cut the thoughts of Callin from my head, it was Alex. We talked regularly, usually planning what we would do when he joined me on the tour.

"Hey Austin." Alex sighed. "I was just wondering if you were free to talk?"

I could instantly tell he was stressed out, he was usually only like this when Callin was playing up. It was a great opportunity to learn how she was doing, and obviously to be there for Alex.

"Of course I'm free, I will always be free to talk to you." I reassured him. "What do you want to talk about?"

The line was silent before he slowly spoke again. "I just feel lonely Austin, ever since she left me... Robert has gone off surprisingly with Hannah, the most unlikely pairing. How could he after what she did to Callin..."

As he said her name his voice began to break and my best friend was suddenly crying on the other side of the line. And as I was so far away from him, there was nothing I could do to help him... I felt worthless.

"How is she?" I asked.

"She's okay now, as she is in a better place." He said softly.

Before I could say or ask anything else, he hung up the phone. What did he mean? He was making it seem as if Callin wasn't even alive anymore. It took me a moment before it all clicked. No one spoke of Callin Constancio anymore, it was as if it pained them to even say her name.

Callin Constancio was dead...

* * *

Nobody was giving me a straight answer. They would just give vague replies. It was usually, 'she's not around anymore' or 'she's gone'. But where had she gone? By the answers I was receiving it was that she had gone down in a grave. If she was dead, then I would never forgive myself. Scrolling down my contacts there was only one person left to call, but it was someone who I dreaded speaking to. As she spoke nothing but the truth.

I cleared my throat as I rang the number. After many rings I was about to give up, but then she picked up.

"I wasn't expecting you to be phoning at this hour, Mahone, have you phoned to gloat about your singing career or how much money you have in the bank? If that's the case then piss off Austin, as I don't care and I don't like you." Luce hissed through the phone.

I took a deep breath. "No Luce, it's not that, I wanted to ask you about... her. No one is telling me how she is or anything about her. I'm scared she is dead..."

"No one told you what happened?" Luce laughed bitterly.

I could feel tears welling up in my eyes. It was my fault if she was dead as I had been selfish and had left her behind. She needed me and I wasn't there for her.

"Please Luce... I wouldn't be ringing if it wasn't important." I begged.

Luce stopped speaking. Maybe she was going to hang up on me. Or maybe she was thinking how she was going to break the news to me. Either way, I was going to break.

"Austin." Luce's voice was surprisingly soft, it was obviously bad news. "After you left, Callin went off the rails again. She was smoking, taking drugs and it didn't help that we didn't see what was going on. No one noticed that she was breaking down as we were too busy being selfish. It didn't help that Alex and I weren't very nice to her on the day that she decided to try and end her life.

She tried to top herself with pills. Alex and Sarah found her in the bathroom having a fit. After, she was luckily saved she was taken away... You see Austin, she wasn't going to stay permanently, one relapse and she would be sent back. So they didn't think twice when they found out that she was now a drug addict and was starving herself again..."

That's when the tears began to flow. I couldn't contain myself. I expected Luce to hang up on me, leaving me to be the pathetic person I was. But she stayed on the line, probably to mock me that I was crying.

"Austin, please don't cry... To be honest I can't say that as I sometimes cry myself to sleep, but what you need to understand is that Callin was always mentally unstable. But wouldn't you be, if you witnessed your dad die, or came home from school to find your mum dead. She needs help, we need to leave it to her." She mumbled.

Luce awkwardly spoke to me for a few minutes before promising to call me back, and hung up. She was gone. It it was unlikely that we were ever going to see her again. I was meant to protect her, try and help her but instead I made things worse.

I didn't save her...
