When I drag my attention away from Lee's face, I take a moment to be disappointed not only was it not a zombie world I even had to deal with stupid people as soon as I awoke. Then the little bit of a fight was barely an appetiser for my frustrations. Well at least I got to see Lee again immediately. Maybe I should just pounce him? Then the mission can't mysteriously complete itself as it likes. In particular this world specifically has the protagonists slow romance that I don't need to be involved in. I should have time but hmmm maybe I really should pounce him?
I stare thoughtfully out the window as the black sedan drives through the city. Lee sat in the back besides me while Kain drove. Two SUV's bracketed the car as they drove. Lee types on his phone while occasionally looking up to offer me a reassuring looks. Should fee worried that he seems to think I need reassurance. How young does he think I am? Or rather how old am I? ah...
Answer body is 16.
I oh, how alert is good to know.
A soft touch on my lips snaps me to attention as I once again find myself staring into Lee's smiling eyes. Did he just, waaah?
"I told you that you should be careful to pay attention to your surroundings." Lee murmurs as he leans back again. "Anything can happen while you're not paying attention."
I blink a few times my mind temporarily frozen. It seems I really can't talk to the system when Lee is around or maybe I should talk to it more? Hmmm.
"Where are we going?" Since I can't think, and he is off the phone I decide it's a good time to ask about our destination.
"going to my place. Introduce you to father." Lee responds with a dazzling smile that has me shaking my head to focus.
What was that meet the parents?
"I – "
Attention attack incoming take immediately precautions.
Lee hadn't put his seatbelt on when we hoped in the car so without much thought at the systems warning I lung forward while flicking my silver thread out. I pin Lee to the seat and let the thread weave around as a safety net across my back just as a bang sounds and the car swerves wildly before the blown tyre catches on something and the car rolls. Tumbling around I inevitably ended up pressed against the wires which with the rush left small cuts on my back to match the cuts from the flying grass on my arms and face but when the car at last comes to a stop I can see that save for some small glass shards in his hair Lee was unharmed didn't even seem to have much chance of bruising.
As was always the case in these sort of moments the car stops rolling on its roof leaving me resting on the wires with Lee pinned to the seat above me. It would have been funny if I hadn't heard the distinct sounds of fighting outside. This is going to hurt. I brace myself as I flick my wrist to retract the thread and promptly fall to the roof landing on the bent metal and glass while using my hands to support Lee so that he didn't end up cutting himself in the process.
"Why did you do that?" Lee asks as he shifts to crouch and tries to examine me.
"Naturally so you won't get hurt. Don't stress, nicest thing about being a Beastskin is fast healing." I say in return as I move to a crouch intending to get out of the car even if not helping with the actual fight it was still better to not wait in the car like a sitting duck. As an afterthought I glance towards the front only to find it already empty. There were some traces of blood on the glass but not much, so I didn't think Kain had been seriously injured.
"Not allowed to do so again." Lee demands as he stares at me until I nod. Well can't say how instincts work though.
Lee then clambers out of the car and crouches outside to over a hand and pull me out. In the few short moments, it took for me to get out some of the finer cuts had already closed and even the larger ones for the most part no longer bled. I really wish that I healed this fast normally would be very convenient.
"well, well what have we here? The little young master and your sweetheart, shall I send you off together?" a deep voice comes from above us and I glance at the wide feet of the man standing over us. I glance at the large knife in his hands before looking up into the tanned face with a single scar running from ear to jaw as if someone had tried to slit his throat but cut too high.
Before I can react, Lee moves surging up and catching the wrist of the hand holding the knife Lee shoves abruptly slamming the blade into the man's shoulder. Then when the man starts to scream, he abruptly wrenches at the jaw dislocating it and effectively rendering them man unable to make loud sounds.
"you stay here, I'll handle this." Lee says as he kicks the man's knee and slams his head against the car knocking the man unconscious. The efficient and ruthless actions surprise me maybe it was because even in the action of the first two worlds there was never real danger and so Lee was always very controlled. Don't not what the cause it but clearly, he has snapped today. Though that technique was very cool.
As I shake my head and prepare to help it is in time to see that things are basically over. Lee deals with two more attackers before the guards and Kain finish subduing them. At the same time more black cars appear from every direction blacker suited guards pouring out until Lee turns back to me.
"Come on, Kain will take us to the house this sort of mess they can at least deal with," Lee says as he walks over to take my hand and lead me to one of the SUV's that Kain is now standing beside. Should I panic a bit now about meeting the parents or just wonder about the reason for the sudden attack?
