CHAPTER ONE
WOODS✧✧✧
"Ro, come on, we must get home!"
Rose Lovell perked up at her name being called from within the crowd of people. They were rushing out of the church, and heading towards the many shops scattered across the street from the small building. Her eyes had sought out where she was being called, when they immediately settled on her older sister's figure waving her hand gently, gesturing her inside the car as she held the door open for her.
Rose skillfully maneuvered her way through the crowd of churchgoers, and spotted the black Cadillac parked right by the pavement across the church; in the busy streets of London, one sunny and lively morning in August of the year 1940.
She tossed her small handbag inside the car, where her older brother caught it, and crawled inside before her sister shut the door behind her.
"Why are we in a rush?" Rose inquired, placing her handbag on her lap and turning to her older sister. She was adjusting her itchy, brown skirts and slipping off her gray cardigan, just as the car turned around the pavement and entered the packed main roads.
The day hadn't been too sunny, thus, only a few clouds adorned the cerulean-blue sky. The birdsongs' melody filled in the calming atmosphere as many citizens strolled down the pavements along with their families, undoubtedly running errands and spending quality time with them. Rose recalled the last day her family had spent time with their father, before he was whisked up to take part in healing the wounded soldiers in the war.
Her sister, Maureen, turned to Rose, and for it, her thoughts then vanished almost in an instant. "Because mum said there were guests coming in a few hours. Isn't that right, mum?" She diverted her gaze to the front passenger seat where their mother sat, patting down her wild ebony curls that sat gently atop her shoulders.
Their driver glanced at the family through the rearview, and reached out a hand to adjust it and point it towards him. He pretended to have not been listening to the Lovell family's conversation.
