Ranger was getting worse by the day. The bandages on her body were constantly stained red for at least 2 days, but since then have been nothing but purple. She always had a very high fever, and was breathless even in her sleep. Eating was a struggle for her, leaving her to only broths. We were stopped in another abandoned town, one some of us knew all too well. I walked with a clenched fist through the street, as memories flooded my mind. I walked back over to Ranger, who we had laid in a makeshift litter. We'd all taken turns carrying her in pairs, and everyone was exhausted from it. The only one who refused to take a break from it was Jaune. He was currently sat against a log, entirely focused on Ranger.
"Jaune?" I said to get his attention.
"Yeah?" He acknowledged.
His focus was on me but his gaze never left Ranger.
"Why is Ranger so protective?" I asked.
Jaune shifted around a little, and his gaze still fixated on Ranger.
"Heather lost someone, someone important to her. It's not my place to say, so that's where I'm leaving it," said Jaune, a little abrasively.
Jaune was holding back on the info, but at least his reasoning made sense. I started to walk away, I had to make sure Ren and Nora were good.
"Halcyon, I know you've been there, so what do you do when someone you care for is hurt?" He asked me.
I stopped and turned back to Jaune, unsure of what to tell him. His gaze was welded to Ranger, and I knew he was referring to her.
"You stay strong, believe in them, you tell the..." I stopped.
I stopped myself from saying it. I would be a hypocrite if I told Jaune that.
"...you tell them it'll all be alright."
Jaune knew what I wanted to say, but he let it be. I walked over to Ren and Nora, who were obviously a little stressed at the moment.
"Are you two alright?" I asked.
Ren stayed silent, but Nora was a little more keen to talk.
"We're ok, just a lot of memories. We were here when the Grimm destroyed everything," she told me.
My heart stopped for a moment.
"It was a long time ago, we were all kids at the time."
I did this. I brought that beast that destroyed the village. I was only six when my semblance manifested, and it manifested here in this town.
"Nora... Ren... I..." I mumbled.
"What?" Asked Nora.
I had to tell them, I already was in pain from not telling Ruby my secret. I wasn't going to hurt myself with another.
"I did this. My semblance manifested here, and brought that monster to your home," I admitted.
I turned away from Ren and Nora, my eyes closed and waiting for them to blame me for all of this. A hand rested on my shoulder, but that was the only touch that happened. No punches, no shaking, not even any words of anger or disappointment.
"It wasn't your fault. You have no control over your semblance," said Ren.
I still refused to look him in the eyes. As we stood there in silence, we heard a beast roar in the town, followed by a lot of gunfire. Ruby slid past the corner of a building firing her sniper, along with Qrow and his gun. Jaune came around the corner carrying Ranger and sword in hand.
