Ruby's POV
Haly's mother held my hand as I sat in the camp. Everyone was trying to comfort me while Uncle Qrow looked for Haly, but I was too upset. I stopped hyperventilating an hour ago, but I was still crying.
"Don't worry dear, your uncle will find him," said Jasmine.
"But... but what..if he's gone?!" I said through my tears. "What if Qrow never finds him?!"
"He will Ruby, and he'll bring him back alive," assured Jaune.
I held tighter to Jasmine's hand, and could feel my heart just pounding with my anxiety.
Halcyon's POV
I walked behind Qrow, with empty hands. I had put my shell back in my pocket, and it wasn't going to leave it again. The forest seemed to open a path for us back to where I had left my friends, and more importantly, Ruby.
"When did Ruby find out I was gone?" I asked.
"The morning after, I left soon after her Silver Eyes Light activated," explained Qrow
"Silver Eyes what?" I asked.
Oscar stepped forward and cleared his throat, his eyes changing to signify Ozpin's control.
"Ruby's silver eyes aren't just a rare genetic trait. They have the power to drive back the Grimm, and are the only warriors that Salem truly fears," explained Ozpin.
"How can a pair of eyes, even if they are hers, do that?" I asked.
"We'll worry about that later, we're close to the camp," said Qrow.
As we approached our camp my heart pounded in my chest. Would she back away again? Would she run from me? What if she doesn't love me anymore?
"Something on your mind?" asked Ozpin.
"I'm worried she won't forgive me," I said.
"I think she'll get over it fairly quickly," said Qrow.
"What makes you so sure?" I asked.
"Because of how distraught she was," said Qrow.
Ruby's POV
I finally stopped crying. Haly's mother had brewed a calming tea for me, and it was helping even if just a little.
"It's so unlike him to have acted like this," said Jasmine.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Before he left on his own, Halcyon was always so bright and joyful. I wish we knew what happened that changed him," she said.
I knew what happened, but... I didn't want to tell them. I didn't want to tell them the real reason.
"I don't know," I simply said.
I get it now. I get why he wouldn't tell me. He always said he didn't want to hurt me, and now I knew where he was coming from. It felt wrong but... I understand why he did it.
Halcyon's POV
"I just hope she doesn't think less of me," I mumbled.
"I don't think there's anything to worry about kid," said Qrow.
I could see the smoke of the camp fire through the tree canopy. We were just about to the camp, and I braced myself for what I would walk into. Qrow broke through the tree line first, followed by Oscar. I stopped and took a deep breath. The leaves flowed around me as I walked out into view, and saw Ruby. I held my head low and away from her gaze, just waiting for her to yell, cry, hit me anything. But none of that came. Instead I was wrapped in her arms, her forehead buried in my shoulder.
"You don't need to apologize, I understand it all. Just please don't leave again," she I mumbled just loud enough for me to hear.
I hesitated for a moment, before quickly picking her up in a hug and pulling her close.
"Never again Ruby. Never again," I mumbled to her.
I set her down, and held an arm over her shoulder as she tucked in close to me. Ranger stood up and held her head low.
"I know you probably don't want to see me, but I have to tell you I'm sorry," said Ranger.
"It's alright Ranger, she needed to hear it, no matter who it was from," I said.
My parents walked over to me and put a hand on my shoulder. They didn't ask me why I'd left, or what had happened. They just stood by me, like they always did.
"But I betrayed your trust," said Ranger.
"No you didn't, if anything you opened my eyes," I said.
Ranger finally looked up at me, a single tear on the young soldier's face.
"Thank you, Heather," I said.
Ranger nodded as she wiped her tear away.
"Sorry to interrupt, but is anyone gonna tell us who the kid is?" Asked Jaune.
"My name is Oscar, but maybe you'd all know the other guy?" He said.
Everyone was plainly confused until the next voice spoke.
"Hello students, it's been some time," said Ozpin.
Jaws hit the floor as our former headmaster revealed himself. I held Ruby's hand, just thanking the gods that everything worked out. I didn't have to say goodbye to my friends, and I didn't have to say goodbye to Ruby.
