The roar of the bullhead's engines was drowned out by the sounds of the Grimm Wyvern circling Beacon Tower. Ranger was practically hyperventilating, her cries becoming less and less audible. Ironwood looked out on the destruction of the city from the open side of the bullhead. I sat in one of the seats, my mind destroyed by everything that had happened. We lost Samuel and Nathan. Half of our team was gone, and I was to blame. The Grimm knew I was in the alley, they focused entirely on me when we fought them, this was my fault. I held my shotgun shell in my hand, the black ink of my name shining from the small light in the aircraft. My shotgun's action was open, and the chamber was empty. My hand shook slightly, as everything was messing with my head. I looked out the door of the bullhead, and I was drawn in by a sight that snapped me back to reality. I saw the woman from the big screen at Amity, fighting Pyrrha Nikos, a member of team JNPR. What worried me more, was the sight of Ruby climbing up Beacon Tower.
"Ruby..." I mumbled.
I remembered what she told me, and put my shell away. I loaded wind dust in the chamber of Old '87 and the rest fire rounds.
"What are you doing?" Questioned Ironwood.
I ignored the Atlesian and jumped out of the aircraft as we passed over the tower.
"Halcyon!" I heard Ranger yell.
I slowed myself down with wind dust, landing on the building. I loaded my next shell as the woman prepared to kill Pyrrha.
"Hey bitch!" I yelled.
The woman turned to me, but couldn't say anything before I blasted her away. Pyrrha tried to stand back up but fell to a knee.
"No, you can't fight Cinder! She has the power of a Maiden, I have to fight her!" Exclaimed Pyrrha.
"I'm not going anywhere! I won't let Ruby fight without me and I've got a score to settle with this bitch," I declared.
Ruby climbed onto the roof of the building, and saw me.
"Halcyon!" She exclaimed.
She pulled me into a tight hug, something extremely relieving for my mind.
"I'm so glad you're ok," she whispered to me.
Pyrrha came up to us and was obviously distressed.
"Please, she's too dangerous, you have to..." pleaded Pyrrha.
The sound of a bow pierced the air, and Pyrrha fell to her knees, an arrow in her back. The Grimm Wyvern landed on the edge of the tower, knocking me and Ruby back to the edge. I caught Ruby by the hand as she almost fell off the building. My heart pounded in my chest as I held Ruby over the edge, swinging her back towards the tower. I caught her in my arms, pulling her right to my body. I turned to help Pyrrha again, but was paralyzed as I saw another arrow pierce her heart. She gasped desperately for air, her eyes dilated in pure fear. The wicked grin posed by Cinder showed her delight in full view, her red dress flowing in the air. Ruby and I watched in horror as Cinder gamboled up to the Pyrrha and placed a hand on her cheek. A red and orange dust filled the air as Pyrrha disintegrated before our eyes. Ruby stood up with utter fear in her silver eyes, and with an unbridled scream to fill my ears, a pure white light blinded me, and a Grimm roar was suddenly cut off. I was thrown off of my feet, disoriented by the immense light. As my vision returned, Cinder was trying to shake away her disorientation, but Ruby was laying unmoving near me.
"Ruby... Ruby!" I exclaimed.
I held her in my arms, trying to wake her up, but she wouldn't even flutter her eyes. I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes, as my mind raced. It's... not... it's... my... fault...
"This... is all your fault..." I told myself.
Cinder stood tall with her wicked grin, finally reoriented.
"Poor boy. Cursed with such a semblance that you can only bring harm," jabbed the woman.
My anger broke me. I was crying with Ruby held tight against me. I could see my hands on her back, and they began to glow black. I had no time to process the change before I blacked out. I don't know how long I was out, but I was jolted back to consciousness by the cry of a Nevermore. I looked across the building, but Cinder was gone. I looked down to Ruby, still holding her in my arms. I picked her up staring at the massive Grimm Wyvern, now encased in stone. It's... my fault... it's all my fault...
- later -
I carried Ruby all the way down Beacon Tower, her unconscious form held in my arms as I marched down the streets of Vale. Tears had stained my face over the time I walked. I felt nothing but regret, I had brought so much destruction to Vale, so much death to Beacon, and so much pain to my friends. I made it to the front steps of Beacon Academy, where Weiss and Team CFVY(coffee) stood able to fight. Yang lay wounded with a missing arm, and Blake was nowhere to be seen. I saw Ranger stand up and walk towards me, stopping a few feet short of me. She saw Ruby in my arms and a look of sadness and seriousness came over her.
"Is she...?" Ranger asked.
I set Ruby down on a bench that was still intact. Seeing her unconscious like this... I couldn't feel my hands. I turned and looked back at Ranger and the others. They could all see the pained look in my eyes. I almost didn't see my named shell in my hand, or my open gun.
"Halcyon..." said Ranger.
I gave it one last, long thought, before making my decision. I dropped the shell in my gun and closed the action, blocking the barrel with my chin. A shot was never fired, as Yang had jumped up and knocked my gun from my hands before she lost full awareness. I fell to the ground, my gun thrown away from me. Ranger ran towards me, but I was a lot quicker. I grabbed a large shard of metal while kicking Ranger's feet out from under her. With tears in my eyes I drove the shard into my wrist, slashing up the length of my forearm.
"Halcyon!" Shouted Ranger. "Get the Corpsman!"
My vision soon went fuzzy as an Atlesian medic ran over to me, Ranger holding my arm tightly, before I lost all consciousness.
