imagine: you were patient in waiting for hyunjin to get his memory back, but he surprised you in the end
y/n's pov
it was now a year since hyunjin's accident and, slowly, things were starting to get better. he still remembered nothing, but you weren't as bothered as you thought you'd be. you hoped things would continue getting better. he began to remember the smallest things, just tiny things you often did together before he lost his memory. like your irrational fear of spiders - even if he thought it was irrational, it was completely rational to be scared of spiders.
most days he'd come to see you, or he'd call you if he couldn't. either way, he made that little bit of effort to talk to you and make more memories. he'd take you out on dates, maybe once or twice a week - you told him everything you used to do together, and he'd take you to those same places and you'd help recreate those special moments you had with one another. sometimes you went somewhere different, he'd just take you wherever - you'd walk, and keep walking until you decided to stop somewhere. neither of you knew where you'd be going, you just followed the path until you ended up somewhere.
you stood in the doorway, your hands held neatly in front of you with a wide grin on your face. you were already so excited for your date with hyunjin, he said he had something to tell you that night - it had to be that night, he didn't want to wait any longer to tell you.
"hyunjin!" you rushed towards him with your arms open wide, his smile already brightening your mood. he brushed back your hair when you reached him, his chin resting on your head with your arms tightly wrapped around his body.
he pulled away, his hands cupping your cheeks, "shall we go?"
"what did you want to tell me? it was really important, right?"
humming at you, he nodded.
rather than asking him where you'd be going, you let him take the lead, walking hand in hand down the street.
you were a little worried - more so than you usually were. it wasn't like every other date you went on - it was 12am. he really wasn't joking when he said it needed to be this day, specifically the start of the day.
the only time you'd go out this late was when you were on your way home after drinking with your friends.
"can i cover your eyes?"
you frowned, snatching your hand back from him with a smirk, your arms now folded over your chest. "where are you taking me?"
"are you nervous?" he chuckled, "i'll look after you, don't worry."
even though you were nervous, you nodded and put your trust in him. you felt his hand move around you to cover your eyes, his other hand gripping onto yours from behind so he could guide you.
you'd walked for at least a few minutes before he finally leant in to your ear, whispering to you, "close your eyes."
he pulled away his hand once you agreed to closing your eyes, and you felt yourself jolt forward a little more.
"step down."
his hand slipped around your waist to hold you upright, making sure you didn't stumble as you stepped down.
what made you so nervous was the fact that it was so quiet. it was early in the morning, but vehicles were usually still passing by this time.
"okay, you can open them."
still slightly nervous, you opened your eyes with caution - all that caught your eye was a road.
he'd brought you to stand in the middle of a road.
"i..." you started, "i don't understand?"
he gave you the chance to look around for a few extra seconds - it took some time for you to realise where you actually were. it was the same road where hyunjin had his accident... where he lost his memory of you.
"hyunjin-"
since his accident, you refrained from telling him about it. you didn't mention where it happened, you didn't mention what happened - including the fight that caused it - you just simply tried to forget about it, luckily he didn't ask any questions.
"you remember, right?" he had a weak smile plastered on his face, he looked at you as if he was disappointed. "why wouldn't you tell me?"
holding back your tears, you dropped your head to sink your teeth into your lower lip, looking back to him with downcast eyes. "i wanted to forget, too."
everything had finally clicked - he remembered.
"do you really remember?" those tears you tried to hold back simply fell down your cheeks, your eyes glaring at his.
he gulped, "i should have pushed her away-"
just with those words, you found your arms clutching onto his jacket as they wrapped around him, your face buried in his chest with your tears staining his clothes.
that was all you needed to hear to know that you had the old hyunjin back. you were no longer worried about helping him remember.
the past year was hard for you to get through, and you'd already given up once - you were scared you'd give up again. now, you didn't have to. you had hyunjin back, he remembered everything. that was all that was important.
you finally felt his arms wrapped around you, his lips pressed against your head as the tears fell from his eyes. "i'm sorry for making you wait for me."
waiting a year was harder than you expected, but it was so worth it.
"i missed you so much," he cried.
that was all you wanted to hear.
