Chapter 12 - Just Like Old Times
~ Nikki's POV ~
Jace stood up, his eyes searching my face for an answer. However, I had no response whatsoever.
If he thought that he could just turn up here after seven months and I would welcome him with open arms and bright smiles, he was wrong.
Jace sucked in a breath, and was the first one to talk. "Nikki, you don't know how long-"
"Cut the crap." I interrupted Jace with a flat tone.
"Nikki, try and understand." Jace pleaded me.
I rolled my eyes, blinked a few times to make sure that no tears fall, and then replied. "That's what you said before you left to see your grandfather." I stared at Jace straight in the eyes.
"That was different-" Jace started off with the unwanted bullshit again.
"No, it wasn't. You were lying then, and you're lying now. For me, there is no difference." I saw Jace open his mouth to object and held up my hand to signal him to shut his mouth. Surprisingly, he listened, so I continued. "I was stupid to put so much trust in you after knowing you for only a few days and I will not make that mistake ever again."
The strong persona I was faking was starting to break and I my head started to ache again from all the alcohol that was in my body. All I needed, and wanted, was a good night's sleep. Not a reunion with an old 'friend'.
"Maybe if you would let me finish my sentences, then I could explain why I didn't come back and you could give me a second chance." Jace raised his voice slightly, making me twice as angry and half as upset.
"Who do you think you are?" I said, equally as loud. "What makes you think that you can come back after seven months, let yourself into my apartment, and then be rude to me?"
"I'm not being rude, Nikki. I came back because I wanted to make sure you were alright. I wanted to know how you have been in the past months. If you were in a stable condition. If you-"
"Get out." I whispered so silently that I barely heard myself. However, it was enough to make Jace stop talking.
"What?" Jace squinted at me. "Get out? That's pathetic, Nikki."
A tear slipped and I wiped it away quickly. "Excuse me? Don't you dare call me pathetic! You're the one that broke your promise. So," I calmed myself down, "Just leave."
"I'm not leaving till we sort this situation out, Nikki." I could hear the guilt in Jace's voice for yelling at me. "Please, can we just talk calmly without arguing?"
"I've got to wake up early for work tomorrow morning. Sorry." I said quietly, unsure of what I was apologizing for.
Jace rubbed his temples and sighed out loud, telling me that he didn't want to fight anymore. "Alright. I'll leave. Just let me help you to your room?" The way Jace said that made it seem like a question.
"No, I can manage." I said blandly, suppressing the urge to hug him for the first time in ages.
"Nikki-"
"Get out, please." The throbbing in my head was getting worse second by second and my legs were weak, barely able to hold up my body weight.
Jace put his head in his hands and cursed angrily. "Okay."
I watched as Jace walked out of the door and closed the door right after him, not waiting to see if he had left the building.
I didn't have the energy and strength to make it to my bedroom so I collapsed on the coach, drifting into uneasy sleep filled with unwanted dreams of Jace.
