Chapter 21 - Bad Luck
~ Nikki's POV ~
"Finally!" Dean cheered when I got my first strike, lifting my up in a hug.
Brielle, Finn, Hailey, Kyle, Dean and I had been at the bowling alley for almost two hours. After losing to all five of them for the past few rounds, I was beginning to catch up to them in the final game.
"Last round, Nikki! Try to beat us." Finn teased.
"Hey, I wasn't that bad." I defended myself. "I'm trailing by eight points only!"
Sure enough, in the final round Finn, Drew and Brielle and got good scores and I managed to get a low four.
"It's fine, Nikki, next time." Drew wrapped an arm around my shoulder. I sighed in amusement at his comment.
We took off our hideous bowling shoes and placed them at the counter for the worker to collect.
"Can we eat?" Brielle whined.
"Is food the only thing that's ever on your mind?" Finn wrapped her in his arms.
"I haven't eaten since the morning!" Brielle pouted.
As we were about to make our orders, I turned to the door, only to see a familiar face - Jace.
He walked in with Sophia and Nick, both of which I recognised from the party I went to with Jace months ago, and it was clear to me that the girl with died tips all black clothing was Renee.
Before I could comment, Finn, Brielle and Dean had released what I was staring and made a decision for me.
"You know what? Let's eat at the burger place that opened up a few days ago. It's only a couple of streets away and I've heard that the food is great." Dean suggested, trying to make me feel less uncomfortable.
"It's fine." I said. "We can eat here."
"Are you sure, Nikki?" Brielle asked, clearly concerned. I looked to the right, only to see Jace and Renee with their tongue down each other's throat.
Cringing, I said, "That burger place sounds better than eating at a bowling alley."
*******
"Bye, guys." I waved goodbye to my small group of friends as I stepped out of Brielle's car.
Dean gave me a kiss on the cheek before I walked into my apartment building, but all I could think about was Jace.
I locked my apartment and went to my bedroom.
Sure, it wasn't the first time I had seen Jace after I kicked him out - but it was the first time I'd seen him kissing Renee. It made me feel sick and I didn't understand why.
In the time I had spent apart from Jace, Dean and I had grown closer. I was happy about that - Dean made me happy, every little thing about him was what I had ever wanted. He wasn't complicated, he was kind, he was outgoing and fun. Despite what I had, I was selfish and found myself wanting Jace and all his imperfections.
What if you never kicked Jace out? My subconscious questioned.
It made me regret my decision. Maybe if I let Jace stay he would've become a better person and maybe he would find it in him to show me be really cared.
The doorbell rang, bursting my bubble and I sat up on my bed. I walked down the hallway and opened the door, surprised to see Have standing there.
"Um, hey." Jace said, rubbing the back of his neck. I noticed that it had became a habit for him to do that when he was nervous.
He took a step towards me and wrapped me in his arms. I didn't know how to react so I just stood there awkwardly until he let go. However, I couldn't deny that I did get happy by his small gesture.
