Chapter 4 – I Can and I Will

~ Nikki’s POV ~

I don’t know what the challenges were going to be but, if accomplishing them would mean I would be able to prove how trustworthy I am to Hailey, I would do it.

“When do we start?” I questioned, running a hand through my dark hair.

“Tomorrow should-” Kyle started to answer, but Hailey had to chip in.

“Right now.” Hailey said, narrowing her blue eyes.

I gave her a slight nod, agreeing. However, Jace didn’t seem too sure about that.

“Come on, Hailey,” Jace said while rubbing her chin, “Nikki’s been through so much and spent the night drinking. Let her rest and we can do the ‘tests’ tomorrow.”

Dear lord, I wish he would stop doubting me.

“It’s fine.” I said, defending myself.

“Okay.” Hailey started talking before Jace could say anything. “Let’s take her to Winnie’s Warehouse, where all of us started up.”

“What exactly are you guys going to make me do there?” I asked.

“We aren’t making up do anything, this is your decision.” Hailey snapped back.

“You know what I meant, what am I going to do there?”

“Steal.” Hailey said.

“You have got to be kidding me! I have never stolen in my life and I don’t plan on doing so today.” I frowned, straightening my back.

“That’s because you’ve never felt the need to take things without permission. You were given everything you wanted since the day you were born.” Hailey retorted, smoothing her grey tee.

Yeah, everything – except for the love, respect and care from my parents, siblings, and boyfriend. I thought to myself, but didn’t say out loud because I didn’t want the pity of people who are poorer than me.

Okay, maybe I should stop thinking like that, I’ll be one of them soon.

“Stop making me look arrogant, I am not like the rest of my family.” The word ‘family’ brought tears to eyes but I had to stay strong.

“Whatever.” Hailey shrugged. “It doesn’t matter what you think about us, you could be like us soon. To survive, we have to do this. If you aren’t comfortable, then you have two options – complete the tests and keep your pride or go back to your bigheaded family and lose your pride.”

Wow, she was in full control. None of the guys were given a chance to speak.

Is she always like this? I thought.

“Are you deaf? I already said that I wasn’t going back.” I gritted my teeth.

“Aright, then. Calm down.” Hailey said, slightly amused, “Let’s go then.”

I could tell that the boys were somewhat hesitant, but they didn’t oppose of Hailey’s decision.

Jace told me that it was about a 10 minute walk to Winnie’s Warehouse. We had no other option but to walk in the burning sun.

I guess this is alright, I said in my head, it’s not like I’ll be getting a spray tan any time soon so might as well make the best of this opportunity.

Hailey and Kyle walked in front and Liam, Jace and I followed shortly behind.

When Hailey was with Kyle, she didn’t look like Little Miss Bossy – she actually looked friendly.
