Chapter 3 - New Beginnings

~ Jace's POV ~

I stopped in my tracks. She had agreed to come.

I really did want the best for Nikki. I didn't want her, or anybody else for that matter, to end up like how I used to be.

I wanted to be the person who gave someone another chance at life - like Kyle and Liam did for me.

Kyle and Liam had been best friends since they were 13. They used to have the same bad situations and helped each other get through the hard times they faced. One day, they found me in an alley across from a pub and invited me to join their crew. I still remembered that day like it happened just this morning.

"Mate, look, that guy's been beaten badly." Kyle said to Liam, pointing at me.

"Come on, let's go give him a hand." Liam replied without hesitation.

They approached me and asked me what happened.

"I just came out here for a smoke, man. This gang saw and told me to give them a joint, but it was the only one I had. They didn't believe me and gave me a bruised face and a possible broken leg in return." I explained.

"We'll take you to the hospital. You need proper care."

I opened my mouth to reject their offer, but they didn't want to hear a word.

"You are going to the hospital, and we are taking you. That's final." Kyle demanded.

I remember myself being worried about the cost of medical treatment, only to be relieved when I found out that Kyle and Liam had that covered for me.As if that wasn't enough, they gave me a place to live, friends to talk to and money to spend. No one had ever cared for me so much. As cheesy as this sounds, I felt special. Special and cared for.

Yes, I agree that they haven't been the best influences on me but they became the family I always wanted and never had. There were things I had to do to be part of The Tackling Three, which became the Fierce Four when I joined, things I'm not proud of. I bashed people from other crew, I tortured people for money, I stole from stores and robbed houses. I did drugs and played many, many girls. However, I was never caught, thanks to the rest of the crew. They were there to help me lose the police cars and security guards at first but, eventually, I learnt how to outrun them on my own. I've improved since then, though. I don't get high and wasted on a daily basis, I only do petty thefts, I bash people only if they get on my nerves - which can be quite easy, and I don't lead girls on anymore. At all.

I want to help Nikki, but I can't do that by myself.

I needed my crew, I needed the Fierce Four.

"I need you to meet some people. Trust me, they're not bad. They helped me and they will help you." I told Nikki.

"Stop saying the word 'help'! You make it sound like I'm not capable of reading, writing, speaking and everything else in between." She replied, with a feisty voice.

Liam and Kyle will like her for sure, I thought to myself, but I don't know about Hailey.

"Fine," I said, "They will 'assist' you. Is that better?" I asked, just to annoy Nikki a little bit more.

She groaned. The only reason she was putting up with me was because I could give her a new life. Otherwise, she would have kicked my balls and be long gone.

We walked about two block and none of us spoke. I watched the way Nikki kicked the cement path with her Nikes. She wasn't like any other rich girl - she didn't wear heels, her hair wasn't styled, she didn't carry around handbags which cost more than Kyle's house and she didn't brag about her money.
