Chapter 5 - Starting Over
~ Jace's POV ~
The walk back to the house was the same, we walk the same grey path, walked in the same form as before, except there was more tension in the air.
And Hailey and Kyle didn't flirt.
Liam made an attempt to crack some jokes but only received a few small laughs that could barely be heard from Nikki.
My mind kept replaying the scene that had happened back in the smelly alley just a few moments ago. I can't believe I went off at Hailey like that. I mean, we have had countless arguments before but it had never escalated to that level before.
It's not my fault, I kept saying to myself, this wouldn't have happened if she had respect for someone other than herself.
But I knew that wasn't true, I was only telling myself that to make myself look better than heron this situation. She had put herself in the toughest of times just to make sure Kyle, Liam and I were in the best place possible.
Looking at it now, none of us were wrong or right. Hailey stood up for what she thought was right and I stood up for what I thought was right.
I made a mental reminder to apologize to Hailey when we reach home.
The next few minutes we spend walking in silence, until it started to rain. Water poured down on us and we all let out a groan. We all hated the rain - and now it was clear that Nikki did too.
"And it's the middle of summer!" Nikki exclaimed as we all ran towards the house. It was lucky that we were only a few meters away from home, otherwise we'd all be spending the day sneezing in bed tomorrow.
Kyle rummaged through the pocket of his jacket and found the house keys. He put the key in and turned the rusty know and we all shoved each other into the house.
"Let's go get changed. There's no way we can be sick tonight, it's Nick's party tonight, remember?" Kyle stated.
"Of course we remember," Liam said, sounding very keen, "It going to be the biggest party of the year - and we're all going to go."
"Hang on, I'm not going anywhere until I know who this Nike dude is." Nikki demanded.
I saw Hailey's mouth open to say something, I was pretty sure it was to tell Nikki off, but she closed it before a word came out.
"We'll tell you about it after we get changed." I said.
With that, everyone walked into their rooms to find a fresh pair of clothes to wear. The house had three rooms - Kyle had his own room, and Hailey didn't have to share with anyone either, and Liam and I shared a room but at least we had separate beds. We would have to settle something for Nikki but we could sort that out later.
I had changed into khaki shorts and a plain white t-shirt. I opened my door to go outside to the living room and say Nikki standing there, water dripping down on the floor from her clothes and hair.
She looked up at me but didn't look too sure about what to say.
"Is everything alright?" I asked her.
"Well, um, actually, I have no clothes to change into." Nikki said, her cheeks burning red like tomatoes.
"Oh, okay. I guess Hailey could give you some clothes." I knew she wasn't going to ask to ask Hailey for clothes herself, so I added, "And Hailey and I aren't on the best terms, so you should ask yourself. Sorry." I gave her an apologetic smile, feeling bad for putting her in this situation just to save myself.
