Chapter 20 - Final Decision
~ Nikki's POV ~
"No, Brielle. For the last time, I don't want to third wheel on your date with Finn." I sighed into my phone.
"Come in, Nikki. It won't be third wheeling." Brielle attempted to convince me. "It'll just be three friends hanging out, me and Finn will pretend like we're not dating. I promise."
My boss, Roy, walked in and flashed me a toothy grin despite the fact that I was talking on my phone during working hours. I continued to listen to Brielle ramble on because I knew that Roy wouldn't mind me chatting with a friend as long as I was working while doing so.
"Nikki, do you mind helping me sort out the accounts and payments tonight? I haven't dealt with the paperwork part of business for a long time." Roy asked kindly.
Brielle must have heard Roy speaking through the phone, because she then asked, "Can I speak to Roy? It's about a job." Brielle's voice reached my ears through the phone.
I handed my phone over to Roy and watched as he talked to Brielle, nodding his head understandingly. "Sure... Yeah... That's a good thing. Bye, you too... Have a good day."
When I put the phone to my ear, the line was dead. Glad that I didn't have to argue with Brielle about third wheeling, I turned my attention to Roy.
"Sure, I can help." I beamed at him. I turned into a very nice person when I talked to my boss. Maybe it was only for the pay rise, but hey, I could do with the extra cash and I'm certain that I wasn't the only one who did that.
"Don't worry about it. If you're here sorting through mounds of papers, who'll take your spot for the double date." Roy wriggled his eyebrows.
"Double date?" I was confused.
"You deserve to make some time with yourself every once in a while. Have fun tonight." Roy smiled and walked back to his office.
I should've known that Brielle wouldn't really be looking for a job - her pay was pretty good for someone who worked in a small bar. Who was I supposed to take as my date?
I know Brielle would want Jace and I to go together, but if only she knew how complicated our 'relationship' had gotten.
Since the night that Jace abandoned me, he hadn't been around as often. He always dodged the questions when I asked him and wouldn't tell me exactly why he only came to say hi every couple of days. I wasn't stupid, however, I knew that Jace had probably gotten back together with Renee and he didn't want to hurt my feelings. Why wouldn't he understand that I was over him?
Maybe because you aren't. My subconscious snarled. I couldn't really blame her. My heart beat faster every time he talked to me, I smiled and laughed with him - well, at most times - and I kind of did lose a couple of hours of sleep each night because my mind kept racing with thoughts of us being together.
Alright, in other words, I still did like Jace. In the most twisted and unreasonable, I had feelings for the guy. He was rude, annoying, hot, funny, and infuriating, but I thought about him every single day.
Except he didn't think of me in the same way. Clearly, the only girl in his life is Renee - which is why I am going to move on and go on the double date. But with who?
Almost instantly, a name came to mind - Dean. Olive skinned, brown eyes, long eye-lashed Dean. Without thinking it through, my fingers flew over my phone's keyboard and found Dean's name in the contacts. I dialled his number without having a clue as to what I was going to say.
