Chapter 16 - Truth or Dare

~ Nikki's POV ~

Jace handed the taxi driver a couple of notes to pay for the ride and stepped out of the taxi behind me. I looked back to make sure that I hadn't left anything on the seat and closed the door.

Tugging on my sleeveless, red dress. Parts of the dress were made of mesh, revealing half my back and the top part of my stomach. It was shorter than any dress I had ever worn, ending a bit higher than halfway on my thighs. However, considering what every other girl usually wore to a club, I decided my clothes were decent enough.

Jace had been gawking at me the entire drive - it wasn't because he was interested, it was because he had never seen me dress this way before. He also had the nerve to tell me that he thought my dress was too inappropriate and that I should change. Being the stubborn person I am, I refused to change. The ache in my foot from the five inch heels were making me regret my choices but I kept a straight face. I had put too much effort into applying the dark eyeliner and mascara, not to mention that my loosely curled hair had taken me more than half an hour to style.

I stared at myself in the reflection of the glass outside the small diner. I had dressed for the club, not for dinner, so I looked a bit out of place. I could barely recognise myself, but I suppose that was a good thing. I never understood why girls applied so much makeup and put so much effort into picking an outfit, but now I knew that makeup made you feel more confident and look a lot better. Somewhere in the back of my head, I had a feeling that this wouldn't be the last time I dressed this way.

Jace looked up at me from his phone screen. "Everybody else is already here." He informs me, annoyance evident in his voice. "They're in the booth furthest from the entry."

I nodded, unsure of how else to respond. Jace had been irritated since we left my... our... apartment. He stalked off into the club ahead of me and I quietly followed behind. Now I was the one beginning to get irritated. I can't believe that he has the nerve to try controlling the way I dress and giving me his rude attitude.

However, tonight was about getting to know each other better and starting over again so I knew better than to start arguing with him.

As we walk through the door of the small and casual diner, I get a few nasty stares from a group of girls sitting at the front table. I immediately recognised them as the 'popular' girls from my old school. There was four of them - Bianca, Natalie, Thalia and Riley - I knew them because they were constantly in competition with Julie, my sister, and her clique. I hadn't seen them for months, ever since I graduated high school. To be honest, I was genuinely surprised that they didn't comment on what happened between my family and I months ago. Then again, it was of news.

I chose to flash them a small smile instead of confronting them in front of Jace. I felt the eyes of two guys on my bare back as I walked further into the diner with Jace and picked up my pace slightly. I saw Jace clench his fists and scowl through the corner of my eye. What was wrong with him? So distant one minute and so overprotective the next? He was confusing me.

I kept walking without looking at Jace until I saw Hailey, Kristen, Liam, Kyle, and Dean sitting at a booth. I waved and smiled at all of them but my eyes were set on Dean. He smile made me melt and his eyes shined in the light of the diner. The way Dean's hair was styled and the way he winked at me made me bite my lip and flush a bright red. Damn, he was hot!

"Hey, girl!" Kristen grinned at me and patted the seat beside her, signalling me to sit next to her. Luckily for me, that seat was between her and Dean, so I could maybe get to know Dean more. As I sat down beside him, all of my confidence had disappeared as I was extremely shy around Dean.
