Preparing to fight

Through watering eyes I saw Mrs Murphy walk over to the door and open it. I blinked for a second and saw the figure at the door lunge at Mrs Murphy, it bit into her neck and tore away, muscles and skin connected the mouth of the figure to Mrs Murphy. Blood was flying everywhere, Mrs Murphy was making a horrible gurgling noise, I felt vomit welling up in my throat but the shock of everything was keeping it down. I blinked again and the figure now had Mrs Murphy pinned to the ground, biting into her stomach and pulling away again sending more blood flying. I blinked for a third time to clear the water from my eyes and saw that the figure was Mr Jones and that 3 students were stumbling over him to try to get into the room.

After seeing Mrs Murphy be torn to pieces adrenaline kicked in, I grabbed the knife I was just using to cut the onion and prepared to run. I turned around for a second and saw that everyone was frozen in shock. "Come on, we need to get out of here! Grab something to protect yourself!" I shouted. Everyone turned and looked at me, then began to move, Shiro and Jess grabbed frying pans, Tom, Shae and Shannon grabbed knives and we all got ready to run. "Quickly into the store room!" I shouted over the top of the gurgling coming from Mrs Murphy. Shiro ran first followed by Shae, Tom, Jess and Shannon and I ran in last. I was about to enter the store room when I was grabbed by the side. I spun and saw Shiro's brother. His hair was matted with blood and the whites of his eyes were horribly bloodshot. All colour from his eyes was now replaced by cloudy grey. He began leaning forward and was about to bite me and there was nothing I could do. I wanted to stab him with the knife I was holding but I completely froze up, so unable to move, I just shut my eyes and waited.

 In the darkness I heard a thud and a crack. I opened my eyes and saw the face of the boy again except this time, his eyes were empty and his head was leaning slightly to the right. His grip released and he fell sideways to the ground. I turned back towards the store room and saw Shae standing there with a fire extinguisher in her hands with the base splattered with blood. "I couldn't leave you to die could I?" Shae said jokingly "Thank you, now let's get out of here." I replied quickly. We hurried into the store room and out the back door, I grabbed Mrs Murphy's keys as I left. Everyone was already outside when Shae and I ran through the door. We sprinted through and Tom slammed the door shut behind us. I spun around and quickly locked the door as a body slammed on it from the inside.

 "What the hell is going on?!" Shiro shouted "Isn't it obvious, it's a zombie apocalypse, the man biting people, the emergency vehicles, Mr Jones killing Mrs Murphy and tearing her insides out" Jess exclaimed "But zombies can't be real, they are just in movies aren't they?!" Shannon said worryingly "Maybe they were but they are real now aren't they, one of them tried to kill Kayleb!" Shae shouted "What! Who was it, do you know?" Tom asked "I'm so sorry Shiro, but it was your brother." I whispered quietly "What, no, no no no no" Shiro said with tears welling up in her eyes. Everyone just stood there in shock while Shiro sobbed quietly "I'm so sorry Shiro" Jess said while giving her a hug "But we have to keep moving, if we stay here the zombies will find us", "Ok then, let's keep moving, but where do we go?" Shiro asked wiping tears from her eyes and trying to put on a brave face "Well, first we need to find better weapons to protect ourselves. Pans and knives are only good when they get close, and we are in more danger when they are close" I said "But what do we use?" Tom asked "Well, I've got Mrs Murphy's keys so we could try the gym store room, there has to be something better in there." I replied "Ok then, let's go in through the back door" Shannon said.

 We walked over slowly towards the gym door and stopped outside "Everyone ready, there may be people in there who we know, but they aren't people anymore, just try to think that you are putting them to peace" I whispered "Ok" every whispered back in unison. As we stepped through those green double doors, we were greeted by an overwhelming smell of blood. We all walked back through the doors and began gasping for air as Shiro threw up beside the door. "We have to go in, we need better weapons, and there may be zombies on the other side of the gym" I said between deep breaths "Ok, just give me a minute please" Shiro said as she stepped away from her vomit. We waited for a little while and prepared to walk back in. "Deep breaths." Jess said jokingly. We opened those doors again, and were greeted by the same horrible smell, except this time less intense. We then walked into the gym.

 The floor of the gym was a mess, there was blood everywhere and bits of someone's insides scattered over the floor. I heard Shiro swallow loudly, trying to prevent herself from throwing up again. My eyes darted around the room and I saw 5 zombies stumbling and sliding on the blood in the centre of the gym. "Ready?" I whispered, hoping not to alert the zombies "Let's just get this over with" Tom said and we began to walk. As we got closer the zombies spun and noticed us and began slipping and sliding to get to us. The first zombies to get close enough was meet with a frying pan swung by Shiro, the next meet with knives from both sides of its head by Tom and Shannon. As the knives were pulled out the body fell to Tom and Shannon's feet. We were almost a quarter of the way across the gym when Shae slipped on a piece of intestines and dropped her fire extinguisher, the third zombie saw Shae as easy prey and was quickly in front of her before she got a chance to stand up. As the zombie bent down to try to bite her a frying pan swung round from the left and smacked him in the side of the head with a sickening crack. The body of the zombie slid across the floor before stopping and remaining still. Shae looked behind her and saw the face of Jess holding a bloody frying pan, "Here, I think you dropped this." Jess said jokingly helping Shae up and giving her the fire extinguisher back "Thanks" Shae said gratefully. The final two zombies were easily killed, being hit in the face with a fire extinguisher by Shae and being stabbed through the eye by me.

 With the zombies dead, we walked over to the blue door that was the gym storeroom. I held up the keys "Anyone know what key opens the door?" everyone either shrugged or said no, "Let's start trying then" I said enthusiastically. I flicked through 4 keys before I managed to find the right one, it was a key with a small piece of blue plastic on it. The lock clicked open, I pushed down the handle and stepped inside. Everyone followed behind me. Shae saw Jess trying to find the light switch "No, we can't attract attention to ourselves" Shae said pulling away Jess's hand. We began searching around for a weapon to use, using the light from out phones to search. Tom came across a bag of golf clubs, he pulled out a wedge and gave an iron to Jess and Shiro. Shannon found the bag used for baseball, Shannon, Shae and I all grabbed a bat. With our newly found weapons we prepare to fight our way out of the school.

 As we were about to leave I heard Shiro's voice behind us "Oh god, our families!" "What?" Shae said "We've been protecting ourselves and we haven't even though about our families!" We all out of instinct sat down against a wall in the store room and pulled out our phones. I shut to door, to prevent the zombies from hearing us. I quickly flicked through my phone's contacts and tried to call my mum, it rang once, twice, three times before going to her message bank. I didn't wait to leave a message, I hung up and called again and again it rang once, twice, three times then went to the message bank. I slowly lowered my phone before dropping it to the floor, I looked around and judging by all the expressions on everyone else's faces, no one could get in contact with their family either. We all just sat there in silence, then I saw my phone vibrate a little, I looked closer and saw that I had a new message, it was from my mum.
