We rode in silence, cautiously avoiding glass along the road moving towards the smoke cloud. We rode across the football oval, and then through the same back pathway. We started riding along the grass, still remaining silent to avoid attracting attention to ourselves. By now the flames had engulfed the canteen and a small section of the science block. We stopped outside the garage which held the bus, we jumped off the bikes. Jess walked over to the door and tried opening “Crap, it’s locked” Jess whispered “I think that key is kept in the office” I whispered back “Let’s go” Jess said quietly. We started crouch walked quickly to the resource centre, I looked over towards the canteen, a large group of zombies had gathered, all fascinated by the flickering light of the fire. Jess opened the door and we walked in.
We stood up in the small room before entering the resource centre “I think that keys are somewhere behind the bench” I whispered still cautious of zombies possibly being inside, we walked through the second door and quickly walked over to the front office deck. We ducked behind it, using the light from our nearly dead phones and began searching for the keys. I threw a pile of newsletters on the floor but finding nothing I moved along. We searched for 5 minutes before I heard footsteps walking towards the desk, I waved for Jess to hide as I hid behind the desk. The footsteps gradually got closer until they passed the other side of the desk, I looked out an saw the zombie of our principal walking slowly. I was about to lean back in when I saw a small glint coming from around the principal’s neck.
I leant back behind the desk as Jess looked out “Who was it?” Jess mouthed silently “The principal” I mouthed back. Jess crept over to where I was “He has the keys” I whispered “Shit, can we grab them without him noticing?” Jess asked quietly “No, he has them around his neck, do you want to do it, or shall I” I asked “No, you do it” Jess whispered. I grabbed my shovel and stood up silently. I squinted in the darkness, searching for the outline of the principal. I turned slightly, trying to spot the principal when I was pushed to the ground.
My head hit the ground hard, forcing my eyes shut for a second, I opened them again to see the face of my zombie principal trying to kill me, his eyes cloudy grey and blood dripping from his mouth, a large bite on his right shoulder. I raised my shovel and jammed it into his throat in a desperate attempt to stop him from biting my face. “Jess! Help me!” I shouted. I locked my elbows and held my breath, desperately trying the keep his gapping mouth away from my face. My elbows started quivering, I couldn’t hold him for much longer. Suddenly the pressure from the principal stopped. His face was no longer trying to eat mine, I quickly stood up and looked at the ground. The principal’s motionless body was lying on the ground with an axe embedded firmly in his skull. I turned around and saw Jess standing there “Thanks for that Jess, I don’t know how much longer I could hold him” I said thankfully “Don’t worry about it, come on let’s grab the keys and go” She replied. I knelt down and grabbed the keys from around his neck and Jess dislodged her axe from his skull. We walked back over to the door of the resource centre, but stopped to see the horde of zombies once looking at the fire, were now desperately trying to get into the resource centre.
“Shit, they must of heard me yelling for help” I said quickly “Come on, let’s try the door on the other side” Jess said. We turned and saw that that door was blocked too. “What are we going to do?” Jess asked “The windows, the ones in the library area, come on, before they decide to cover them too” I said turning and running towards the windows. I reached the window first, I swung my shovel quickly, shattering the window. I dragged my shovel along the windowsill, clearing away any glass shards still sitting there. Jess and I began climbing the shelves and climbed through the window. We sprinted across the courtyard towards the garage; a few zombies spun and started walking towards us. We reached the door, I shoved the key in the lock, twisted it swiftly making a click and Jess and I quickly lifted the door and ran inside. Jess reached the door first, I threw her the keys, they glinted slightly when in the air due to the mid-day sun. She caught them and quickly opened the door and ran to the driver’s seat. I ran to the other side and tried opening the passenger door, locked. “Jess, my door’s locked!” I shouted. She leaned across the centre console and unlocked my door. I opened it quickly; smacking a zombie which I didn’t notice was beside me in the face. I grabbed the handle above the door and jumped onto the seat as Jess shoved the key in the ignition. I shut the door just as the zombie stood back up. I was looking at it when I heard the engine start with a low rumble. “Let’s go!” Jess shouted shifting the gears with a loud clunk. As she drove out of the garage she hit three zombies.
Jess drove out of the garage and into the small area where we escaped from the first zombies, she sped along and drove straight out the front gate of the school. She made a left out of the school gates and turned left at the roundabout. We reached an intersection; the way to my house was too clogged with debris. “Make a left, we can drive along the train tracks to bypass the wreckages” I said pointing to the road on the left. She spun the wheel quickly and we began driving. “How well do you think this thing can go off road?” Jess asked “Not very well” I said “But you can slow down now, I don’t think that the zombies are following us anymore”. Jess eased her foot off the accelerator; we kept driving along the road until we reached a railway crossing, “If we cross here, we should be able to drive along the road and get to my house”. Jess turned the wheel, we drove across the tracks as the bus bumped slightly. We continued driving until we returned back to my house. Jess went up to the end of the street and turned around in case we have to make a quick escape.I opened my door and climbed out of the bus, grabbed my shovel and began walking towards the front door as I shut the bus door. As I walked I noticed that the windows which once allowed people to see in were completely covered with repurposed cardboard boxes. I pulled my house keys from my pocket and we walked inside. Jess walked straight into the lounge as I spun around and relocked the door. I walked into the lounge and everyone was sitting on the couch, “How did you two go?” Tom asked “Well, Jess killed the principal and we have a bus, so ok I guess” I said jokingly “You got a bus?” Shiro asked questioningly “The one from the school” Jess said “Did you have any trouble making the house safer?” I asked “Not really, only one or two zombies came, nothing major” Shae said “Ok, so we have somewhere safe…ish, a means of movement, a decent supply of food and water and some fairly good weapons, however, I think we may need to go to Bunnings or something to get planks of wood, because the cardboard outside will only work so well” I said “Ok, well should we all go or” Shannon was cut off by a knock at the door.
