Tom ducked under the top of the fireplace and through to the other house, Tom moved to the left to allow everyone to follow through. The other side of the house was smaller than the area which we had just came through. The curtains were shut and the only source of light came through the small window in the kitchen to the left. Jess led the way as we cleared the two bedrooms. “Ok, what do we do now?” Ebony asked “Barricade the windows I guess” Shae shrugged. We walked back through the fireplace and out the front door. I went to the bus and looked inside. Scarlett was curled up asleep on the passenger’s seat. I opened the door and carried her inside before walking back outside to help unload everything. Jess and Kaycee carried in the boxes of food, Shiro was carrying the batteries, Shae and Ebony were picking up the hammers from the bus floor, Shannon was carrying in the box of nails and James, Tom and I were emptying the Land Rover of the planks, we kept the tents in the Land Rover. The sun had almost completely set when we managed to barricade all the windows. We walked inside and into the lounge, I placed a plank of plywood covering the pathway through the fireplace. Kimmy was sleeping peacefully on the ground and Scarlett was asleep on the couch. Everyone sat down at the dining room table. “The house is safe, we have food and water and we have weapons to protect ourselves. What do we do now?” Kaycee asked “Speaking of weapons” Jess said standing up from the table. She walked over into her parent’s room and walked inside. Everyone else just sat at the table and shrugged, unsure of what could be used as a weapon in her parent’s room. After a few minutes Jess re-emerged with a rifle in her hand and a small box of ammo in her other “Has anyone ever been hunting?” Jess asked from the doorway “I have” Ebony said, everyone else shook their head. “It’s a .22 I think, my dad used to go hunting” Jess said handing it to Ebony. Ebony took the rifle and loaded it. She lent it against the wall while I walked over to the food box. I randomly grabbed 9 cans from the box and handed one to each person. “And with what you asked before Kaycee…” Jess said sitting down “Let’s relax a little bit, does anyone want to play Uno?”
Jess grabbed a deck of Uno cards and set them out on the table. We sat around enjoying something simple in life, forgetting for a little while that the world has completely changed. We smiled and had fun just enjoying something as simple as a game of Uno. We played Uno until about 9:30 when everyone started yawning. We shifted the mattresses from each of the bedrooms on Jess’s side of the house into the lounge as Ebony and Shae collected blankets and sleeping bags. We set everything up in the lounge and settled down sleep.
Through watering eyes I saw Mrs Murphy’s throat being torn open, I was suddenly above the school seeing people who I knew either being killed or killing. Chaos was everywhere as people ran with their uniforms stained with blood. Parents sitting in cars were screaming as they saw their children being killed before their very eyes. When they saw their child fall they ran from their cars, hoping to maybe save the life of the child which they raised for years but they ended up being killed by the children they love. People jumped in random cars and drove away, smashing into humans and zombies alike before being completely surrounded by hordes of the undead. I suddenly appeared again in the cooking room seeing people pushing in through the door.
I awoke with a start seeing glints of sunlight shining through the cracks in the barricades. I sat up and walked over to the front music room. I opened the door and was met by the chill of the morning air, the sun was rising over the shed and birds were awake. A zombie was walked down the dirt driveway. I walked back inside letting the wire door close as I went; I grabbed my machete and walked back outside. I walked bare foot towards the zombie. I quickly swang downwards embedding my machete in its skull. I grabbed the zombie’s arms and dragged down the driveway, dumping it beside the shed. I pulled my machete from its head and walked back inside, leaving the bloody machete outside the door. I walked back into the lounge room and noticed that all the cans were still scattered over the table. I grabbed the dental floss and needle from the medical bag and sat down at the dining room table. I treaded the dental floss around the all the cans creating a banner sort of thing out of cans. I broke the dental floss and placed it back in the medical bag, I carried the cans outside, trying to make as little noise as possible. I opened the front door again and tied one end of the dental floss to a balcony pole and the other side to another. The cans were streamed in front of the door, I ducked under and grabbed a few stones from beside the house. I chucked a few rocks in each can and gave them a shake. They gave off a slight rattling noise. I walked back inside, shut the door and sat down at the table waiting for everyone to wake up.
It sat there for about half an hour, feeling like I am about to fall asleep again but every time I was about to fall asleep the picture of people being torn to pieces kept flashing through my head so I stayed awake, leaning forward onto the table. Gradually everyone awoke, standing up to stretch and walking over to the dining room table and sitting down with me to wait. “Morning” Kaycee said sitting down “Morning” I said quietly “Why are you awake so early?” Kaycee asked “I couldn’t sleep so I went outside, I killed a zombie and tied our food cans outside as an alarm system thing” I said sitting up properly “Any plans for today?” Kaycee asked as Tom woke up “I don’t know, maybe we should go to the pharmacy in Hastings and maybe a clothes storing seeing as we couldn’t yesterday.” I suggested, Tom walked over and sat down at the table. “Morning” Tom said quietly “Morning” Kaycee and I both said quietly “Ok, well let’s do that then, but for now, what’s for breakfast?” Kaycee asked.
I walked over to the kitchen, an old gas oven with a built in stove was set in the bench. I twisted on the gas for the stove and looked closely. The area around the element was squiggly from the gas. I twisted it back off “Looks like that gas is still working” I said looking over at Kaycee and Tom. I walked over to the box of food and grabbed a few cans of baked beans and spaghetti and set them on the bench. I began searching through the cupboards, looking for some pots. I managed to find some and set them on the stove. I emptied the contents of the cans into separate pots and lit the elements. A flame flicked up under each pot starting to heat the food. As the sauce began to bubble, everyone walked to the table, woken by the smell of baked beans and spaghetti. “Jess, where are the bowls kept?” I asked as she sat down “The cupboard beside the cutlery drawer” Jess said. I walked over and grabbed 9 bowls out. I turned off the gas and emptied the pots as evenly as possible into the bowls. I carried them over, two at a time and set them on the table. I carried all the bowls over and went back to the cutlery drawer. I grabbed 9 spoons and walked put them on table. We all sat down and had our first proper breakfast in days.
“What’s our plan today?” Shae asked “Kaycee and I were discussing that, I was thinking we should go to a pharmacy and to a clothing store seeing as we weren’t able to yesterday” I said “Ok, well, let’s do that after breakfast” James said. We continued eating as the sun rose further and further. After breakfast I feed Scarlett, Jess feed Kimmy and we left and all gathered in the now empty bus. Shannon drove us off of the property and into Hastings.
