A New Survivor

 “Did you guys hear that?” Shiro whispered. Another knock on the door. I grabbed my shovel and crept towards the door.
“Crap, did I shut the mesh door as well?” I thought to myself. I reached up for the door handle, I turned around to Shae and whispered “Ok, if this is a zombie, shoot him”. I spun the door handle and opened the door. Standing in the doorway was James, he had been sitting in my class just a day before. He was medium height with dark hair and brown eyes. “Umm, hello…” I said “I saw you steal the bus from the school, you seemed to be surviving ok, so I followed you and was hoping for some help” James said “Ok then, umm, come in” I said stepping aside. “We are all staying in the lounge through here” Jess said leading James through the sliding door. I closed the wire door and locked it before closing the front door and locking it also.
I walked into the lounge; James was sitting on the couch. “I didn’t think anyone else survived from school, there were so many zombies there” Shiro said “Yeah, when it all started I ran to our form room, and luckily it’s away from the other classes so no zombies or people really came over” James said “I haven’t really ate anything since the morning it began”, “Oh, ok, hold on, I get you some food and something to drink” Shannon said standing up. Shannon walked over and grabbed a can of tuna and a can of Fanta. “Here” Shannon said handing James the two cans “Thanks” James said opening the Fanta “So, how’d you get here?” James asked “Well, we were in the cooking room when it started so we had weapons for when it started” Jess said “Then we left through the store room and went through the gym to get weapons which don’t make us have to get so close” Shannon said “Then we went across the oval and made our way here” Tom said “We stayed the night here and left early to get food from Aldi” Shae said “Then we came back here, got a bus and now we are here” I said “Well, could I join up with all of you?” James asked “Well, we can’t leave someone who is alive to die out there, I’ll go find a weapon for you in the garage” I said walking into the garage. I rummaged around in the garage for a while before managing to find a pair of hedge trimmers. I grabbed them and started walking towards the door. I was about to open the door when I heard a small meow beside my feet. I looked down and saw my cat, Scarlett, rubbing against my leg. I picked her up under the stomach and walked inside.
I put Scarlett down and opened the linen closet and pulled out some cat food. I filled her bowl with both dry and wet food. “Good to see you’re still alive” I said scratching her behind the ears. I walked into the lounge “James, is this ok for a weapon, it’s the best I could find” I said holding up the hedge trimmers “Yeah, thanks. So, what’s your plan?” James asked. We all looked at each other and shrugged “We don’t really have one, we just have preparations if something goes wrong” Shae said “Well, I guess we could go to other supermarkets and get more food” Jess said “We also need to get cat food” I said from the doorway “Why?” Tom asked “I found my cat outside, so she is living with us now” I said “Ok, so we need even more food and water and supplies from Bunnings” Shiro said “I think we should keep the bus as something to use in case this place doesn’t become safe, and we should use smaller vehicles to go collect supplies” Jess said “So, we need more cars as well” Shannon said “Where should we get them from?” Tom asked “Well, I think we will need a 4 wheel drive to get the bigger stuff, and a small car to get through the wreckage” James said “I think that the people across the road have a Land Rover” I suggested “But the question is, who is going?”
“Okay, first we should clear out each of the rooms, making sure that there aren’t any zombies, and then we find the keys for the car and at the same time search for food and water” Shae said “And who is going?” Shannon asked “We should all go, just in case” Shiro said “Ok, well is everyone ready?” I asked. I was met with nods as we started walking towards the door, I unlocked it and we all walked outside. As I shut the door I saw Scarlett walk from out of the laundry “We’ll be back” I said as the door completely closed.
