Hastings was a bigger mess than Somerville was, more zombies were on the street, and when everything went to hell people began stealing everything they could from shops. Store windows were smashed, cars were on fire and zombies walked the street. Shannon had to drive slowly to avoid crashing into anything, zombies walked over and began banging on the windows, knowing that we were able to be their breakfast, but Shannon kept driving, moving through the wreckages until we stopped outside the pharmacy. We all quickly climbed out of the bus and ran over to the pharmacy windows. The windows were broken but the protective shutters were down so shards of glass were stuck between the window sill and the shutters. “Shit” Shae said when she got to the window. We all stood with our backs to the window ready to fight the zombies moving towards us. James pulled an arrow from his quiver and drew his bow, Ebony raised her .22 rifle, Kaycee pulled the pistol from her bag and Shae raised her nail gun. James released the arrow, sending it driving into the first zombie’s eye. The zombie fell forwards, driving the arrow out the other side of the zombie’s skull. “Keep them away, I’ll try to get the shutter open” Shiro said turning to the window. We started fighting the horde of zombies trying to kill us, it seemed like the whole of Hastings has turned into a zombie and they were all trying to get us. Ebony raised the rifle and fired, the bullet smacked a zombie in the forehead, a shard of the bullet tore through its head killing the zombie walking behind it. Kaycee raised the pistol, “Have you ever shot before?” Ebony asked firing again “No, but now is a good as time as any to learn” Kaycee said pulling the trigger. The pistol clicked but nothing happened “What the?” Kaycee said questioningly “You need to reload it” Tom said passing her the box of bullets. Kaycee opened the box and reloaded it as quickly as possible. She raised the pistol again and fired, the bullet drove into the skull of zombie but the force of the pistol made Kaycee’s hands jerk upwards. She fired again accidentally hitting the sign. Sparks started flying from the sign causing the zombies to stop and stare at the bright lights. “I’ve got it open” Shiro said, we all quickly climbed through the window.
Shiro quickly shut the shutter cutting off any light. I pulled the flashlight from my bag and quickly shined it around the store, clear. “Come on” I said walking down an aisle “What are we after exactly?” Shannon asked “Anything useful, painkillers, bandages, absolutely anything” I said grabbing a box of painkillers off the shelf. We ran around the pharmacy grabbing anything which could be of use, but there was very little left on the shelves and quite a lot of things on the ground. While everyone was collecting medical equipment I ran down the aisle and jumped over the counter. I walked over to the prescription medicine and started searching for anything of use. I picked up a box, sleeping pills, I threw them in my bag and kept searching. By the time I had searched all the shelves I had collected 2 boxes of sleeping pills, 5 boxes of painkillers, a bottle of antibiotics and a box of empty needles. I jumped back of the counted and walked over to everyone waiting by the closed shutter.
“Is there a back way?” Ebony asked “I don’t know, but we can’t go back out that way” James said indicating the shutter “But we have to get the bus” Kaycee said “There could be a staff exit somewhere” Shae said looking around the room “We should look for it then” Jess said starting to walk around the outside of the room. We split into pairs, Shannon and I, Jess and Shae, Tom and James and Kaycee and Ebony. We started walking around the pharmacy. “It’s over here” Tom shouted from somewhere in the pharmacy. We quickly went over to where Tom’s voice came from, he was standing in the back left corner of the store, slightly behind a shelf of cardboard boxes. He signalled for us to come over. A metal door with a small window on it was sitting behind it, a small green exit sign on the wall above it. “Well, that wasn’t the difficult” Shiro said walking up to the door, she tried twisting the handle but it didn’t move “Crap” She said stepping back “Yeah, I was just about to say that it was locked” Tom said looking at the door “It has to be here” I said walking over to the counter. Everyone followed and we started searching beneath the counter for a key.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw Shannon stand up and walk over to the door. “Have you found it?” Kaycee asked standing up “Maybe…” Shannon said walking behind the shelves “The door is open” Shannon said from behind the shelves, everyone stood back up and walked through the metal door. The sun left a shadow of the building over the alley causing it to be a dark and gloomy place. “Come on, we should be able to get out over here” Shiro said walking down the alley. We all followed along the darkened alley until we reached a gap which lead back into the car park. “Come on” Shiro whispered stepping into the gap. We all followed with our weapons raised, ready to fight any zombies which notice us. We all stepped back into the open, the sparks were no longer flying everywhere and the zombies were now banging on the shutters. Shiro ducked down and started walking towards the bus, keeping as low as possible. We all followed and quickly climbed into the bus. The engine roared as Shannon turned the key, the zombies banging on the shutters turned around and began scrambling towards us. “Go go go!” Ebony shouted from the back seat, Shannon sped out of the car park and onto the main road.
Shannon drove back to Jess’s house as Jess gave directs on how to get there from the passenger seat. We drove through the white fence and along the dirt driveway. Shannon pulled up beside the Land Rover and turned off the engine. Kaycee left the pistol and James left the bow sitting on passenger seat as we climbed out of the bus. We walked towards the house, Jess pulled the key from her pocket and extended her arm towards the lock, she suddenly stopped. “What’s wrong?” Ebony asked from behind her “The lock has been broken” Jess said not turning around, Ebony raised her gun silently and pushed open the door.
Barricading all the windows made it so the house was dark, small stream of light were coming through the gaps in the wood. Ebony slowly stepped forwards into the doorway as we all followed with our close range weapons in hand. Ebony began walking towards the doorway leading into the lounge, we all followed cautiously. Ebony was about to walk into the lounge when the front door slammed shut behind us. I jumped and somewhere in the darkness some gasped. “Hello…” A voice said in the darkness beside the door. Squinting I could see Ebony spin to face the door. Someone came walking in through the lounge door holding a lantern in one hand and a pistol in the other. The lantern illuminated the whole music room, two people were standing against the wall aiming guns at us and a man was beside the door holding a large knife. “Good afternoon everyone, my name is Carl and this is my house” The man beside the door said stepping forward “I suggest you drop all your weapons or we will have to use force. We all dropped our weapons, letting them hit the floor loudly. “Thank you, Frank, grab their weapons” Carl said looking at a man standing against the wall. Frank walked over and pushed our weapons away from us. “Now, how’s about you take off your bags and you leave, and out of my generosity, you can keep that bus you pulled up in” As Carl finished talking he opened the door. I slung my bag off of my back and walked out the front door, everyone followed. Once outside Carl slammed the door shut and we were left standing outside the house with nowhere to go. We walked off the porch slowly and stopped once we reached the bottom “What do we do now?” James asked “I don’t know, we should probably find new weapons and food I guess” Shannon said quietly “And until we find a place to stay we will have to live in the bus” Ebony said looking at the small bus. The front door opened again behind us, we all turned silently. “Here” Carl said “You can keep you dog and cat as well, but get off of my property now”. He pushed the animals out the door and slammed it shut.
