Dental Floss and Whiskey

I reached the door first and unlocked it, I quickly pushed it open and stepped inside. Once everyone walked in, I shut the mesh door and the front door, locking them both. “Let’s put everything we got on the bench” James said. Jess put the Swiss army knife and the cricket bat on the table, I put the box of bullets and whiskey down, Tom put out a few cans of food and a small medical box, Shae put the block of chocolate and Shannon emptied her bag of dental floss, band aids and a needle. “Ok, what do we do now?” Shiro asked “Well, I think tomorrow we go travelling, first we go to Bunnings and collect planks and such, then we go to a clothing store and collect new clothes so we can get out of our school uniforms and so we have clothes for winter.” Shae said “Ok, so we have a plan for tomorrow, but what do we do today?” Jess asked “Maybe we could go to Bunnings today, I mean, there is still half a day left” Shannon suggested “We should all go, because Bunnings is a big store and there was probably quite a few people there” I said “Ok, umm, Shannon you drive the Land Rover and I’ll drive the bus” Jess said. “Someone should wait here, just in case someone comes here looking for help like I did” James said “I’ll stay, but could I have the pistol Kayleb?” Tom asked, I took the pistol out from my bag and handed it to Tom “Just point and pull the trigger… I think” I said “There are more bullets on the bench if you need them, but it is only a last resort”. Everyone but Tom walked towards the door. I grabbed a few cardboard boxes which were left over from barricading. As I shut the door I heard Tom say “Now, where is that cat?”
Shannon was sitting in the 4 wheel drive with Shiro in the passenger seat; everyone else was sitting in the bus. I got in the bus and we set off with the Land Rover in the lead. The roads were littered with motionless cars; a few zombies wandered the roads looking at us as we went. Shannon was using the Land Rover to push remains of cars out of the way, clearing a path for the bus. Small groups of zombies searching for their next meal tried to stop the bus and car but we continued onwards until the red brake lights signalled on the car ahead. I got up and walked up to Jess “What’s going on?” I asked as the Land Rover came to a complete stop “No idea, could you go ask, I’ll keep the bus running” Jess said “Ok, be back in a second” I slid open the door and stepped outside, glass and metal littered the street. I walked over to the passenger window of the Land Rover and knocked, Shiro wound it down. “What’s going on?” I asked “There is someone up ahead, I don’t think they are dead” Jess said squinting trying to see who it was. I pulled the binoculars out of my pocket and lifted them to my eyes. The reflection of the sun glinted off the binoculars and made it impossible for me to see, I crouched down hoping to make it so I could see.
With the sun no longer reflecting off the binoculars I noticed something, the figure up ahead was wearing our uniform, “I think it is someone from school, there is two of them” I said still looking “They don’t look like zombies” I said lowering the binoculars “Let’s keep going and find out who they are” Jess said. I waved to the bus and got in the back of the Land Rover. We drove slowly towards the two people before stopping just short of them. I got out and walked towards them “Hello?” I said loudly “Kayleb? You’re alive!?” One of the figures said “Kaycee, you made it out of the school? Who are you with?” I asked. Kaycee had long blonde hair and blue eyes. “It’s Ebony, she got her leg cut on some metal, can you please help?” Kaycee asked. I noticed that Ebony was standing behind Kaycee. I waved for the bus and car to move up beside me. The Land Rover drove just ahead so the bus could line up beside me, I helped Kaycee move Ebony onto the bus and sit her down on the first seat. “Jess, could you wait for a second, Ebony cut her leg?” I asked “Yeah, I think that Shannon has the medical kit, I’ll go get it” Jess said getting out of the driver’s seat. “Umm, Ebony, we don’t have any proper sewing stuff so… you may want to drink some of this” I said taking the whiskey out of my bag “Umm, why do I need whiskey?” Ebony asked “As a painkiller” I replied as Jess walked back into the bus “Here” She said handing me the medical box, I pulled the dental floss and needle out of the box, when Ebony saw it she took a quick drink of whiskey. “Are you ready?” I asked threading the floss “As I’ll ever be” Ebony said.
I knotted the dental floss around the eye of the needle, breathed in deeply and looked at the cut on her left calf. I pushed the needle through some skin on one side of the cut and quickly through the other, I heard Ebony grunt and heard the sound of her drinking some more. “Sorry” I said, I pushed the needle back around through more skin, across the cut and through more skin and pulled tight and repeated until the separate parts of skin were together. I cut the dental floss and tied it in a knot. “It’s done” I said looking at Ebony. Her long, brown hair was a complete mess. I pulled a bandage out from the box and wrapped it around the stitching, “There, that should do for now, sorry about it having to be dental floss” I said standing up “Thanks, here’s the whiskey back” She said passing me the bottle. I twisted the cap back on the bottle and put the medical box and whiskey back in my bag. “Do you want to try to walk on it?” I asked. She stood up and walked down to the back of the bus and back before sitting back down “I can walk but I’ll take it easy, thanks, Kaycee, come up here.” Ebony said “So, where are you staying, and what’s with the bus?” She asked “Well, long story, we are staying at my house, and the bus is so we can all go places” I explained “And where are you going right now?” Kaycee asked “We’re going to Bunnings for supplies, anyway, would you two like to join the group, we have shelter and food and water” I offered “Yes, please, we have nowhere else to go” Ebony said “Actually, do you anything to eat with you?” Kaycee asked. I opened my bag and pulled out two cans of drink and two cans of food “Tuna and spaghetti” I said handing them a can each “Thank you” Kaycee said opening the spaghetti. “We can keep going” I said turning back towards Jess. She turned the bus back on and we continued on our way to Bunnings.
