We floated into port, James reached out and grabbed a lower dock to stop us from moving. I quickly tied the boat up as everyone climbed out. We loaded out bags with food and water and left the remaining food on board. “We have to leave it, if it is safe we can come back and get it” I said grabbing Scarlett and climbing out of the boat. I set her down, she seemed much calmed being back on solid ground. Kimmy jumped out of the boat behind me. We started walking, Kimmy following on foot, Scarlett in my arms and Kaycee carrying Leo. We walked up some wooden stairs onto a street. Everything was clear, there weren’t any zombies, or people, or cars. The street was completely deserted of everything. “Where is everything?” I asked “No idea, we should look around…” Ebony said stepping forward. We started walking down the street, all of us on edge expecting us to be attacked at any minute but no zombies came. “It’s weird, if it was safe there would be people, but if it was attacked then there would be zombies…” I said to the group while walking “I have a bad feeling about all of this…” I added. We kept walking, we eventually reached Federation Square, there was no noise except for our footsteps. “Hello…!” Tom shouted hoping someone would appear. We heard his voice echo around the silent city. We waited until we could hear Tom’s voice no more, nothing stirred. Ebony shouted “Is anyone here?!” Her voiced echoed around the city again until we could hear it no more. I looked over at the Eureka Tower, I don’t know why but I just did. The sun was behind it, just visible shining through the sky box. I squinted slightly from the bright light. There was someone in the sky box. “There is someone in the Eureka Tower” I said loud enough for everyone to hear, I grabbed the binoculars from Shiro and raised them to my eyes. The binoculars weren’t strong enough for me to make out facial features but I could tell that it was a woman. “It’s a lady” I said out loud, another figure moved into view “There is someone else up there with her” I added, the other person was a man “The other person is a man” I said, suddenly the man attacked the woman, the woman fell to the ground with the man crouching over her, suddenly 5 more people piled into the sky box “Oh god, there are more of them, but they are zombies” I said without moving the binoculars, then a loud gunshot echoed through the city, the floor of the skybox fell, the lady and zombies all falling. I followed them falling with the binoculars until they went behind a building, half a second later a loud crash echoed 5 times louder than Tom and Ebony’s yelling. I removed the binoculars from my eyes “She shot out the glass floor…” I said looking downwards “We have bigger problems right now…” Shae said, I looked up, all the buildings surrounding us were alive with movement, the once silent sitting now echoed with the sound of thousands of feet moving in unison, zombies began smashing themselves against the glass doors and windows of the building surround Federation Square, “We need to go… now!” I said, we started running through the street, zombies spilling out from buildings behind us and in front of us, we ran through the city, everyone who was once human flooding into the streets. We ran down the wooden stairs of the dock, thousands of zombies following us. Kimmy ran ahead sensing danger and leapt into the boat, we vaulted into the boat. I turned on the boat, turned around quickly and drove away. We got about 5 metres from the dock before we stopped suddenly, everyone lurched backwards “Shit, we’re still attached!” I said standing back up, Kaycee grabbed her machete and cut through the rope. We set off again back towards the other docks.
I parked the boat at the dock again, this time holding the pole to prevent it from moving. Everyone unloaded everything and put it back in the bus and Land Rover. I jumped out of the boat and left it floating there, within minutes the tide had taken the boat away, quite possibly to never be seen again by human eyes. I walked along the dock and climbed in the bus. Ebony was in the driver’s seat, I closed the door and sat down “Ebony, can you try the radio? Maybe there is some information as to where we should go” I asked, Ebony reached over and turned on the radio. She flicked through all FM channels before switching it to AM. She changed along the AM channels before stopping, she turned the radio up loud “This is a public service announcement, everyone remain in your homes, cover you windows and barricade you doors. Do not open for anyone. Avoid cities at all costs. This is a…” The message repeated itself, Ebony continued searching but to avail. She switched off the radio “Nothing, unfortunately…” She said quietly “Does anyone have any charge left on their phones?” I asked, everyone pulled their phones from their pockets and checked “I have 3% left, why?” Tom said “Can I borrow your phone for a minute” I asked, Tom handed me his phone, I quickly went onto the internet. I went a website for news in Australia, the top stories were that the prime minister was has died and that Canberra was a dead zone. I continued scrolling downwards, searching for somewhere that is considered safe but more stories passed, ‘Strange disease appears in Europe’, ‘Disease found on all continents except Antarctica’, ‘American president dead’, nothing stating somewhere safe to go. I continued scrolling down until Tom’s phone died. I passed it back to him disheartened “Anything?” He asked, I just shook my head “It’s everywhere… no one has escaped it” I said quietly “Well, I guess we just keep driving until we find somewhere…” Ebony said turning on the bus “But first we need fuel”. We drove away from the waterside before stopping at a petrol station to refuel. We drove east for the rest of the day before stopping at a clearing on the side of the road. We unloaded the tents from the Land Rover and quickly set them up with the baby cot in the larger one. After setting them up we gathered stones and sticks and formed a fire pit. When the sun finally went down with great difficultly created a small fire. We all gathered around it, we sat and ate in silence until everyone climbed into a tent and went to sleep. I was the last one to go to sleep so I kicked some dirt onto the flame to extinguish it and climbed into a tent, Scarlett following behind me. We had no mattresses or pillows so I slept on the hard floor with Scarlett curled up beside my head. With much tossing and turning I finally fell asleep.
I was in the skybox, a pistol in my hand with a single bullet in it, a swarm of zombies coming towards me. They stepped into the sunlight coming through the skybox, it was my family and friends, their eyes were blank and their skin covered in blood and gore, their mouths all agape as they moved towards me. I was cornered, I raised the pistol to my head shaking. They were suddenly biting and tearing into me, all the zombies attacking me, all at once. One of the zombies grabbed my arm and pulled it away from my head. I accidentally pulled the trigger. I was then falling, everything seemed to go in slow motion, the zombies still tearing at my flesh, blood flying everywhere. I hit the ground, every bone in my body shattered instantly but I didn’t feel any pain, all of my organs splattered instantly. The last image I ever saw was my two sisters chewing on my arm.
