Family

Standing in the doorway was a man, a woman and two small children hiding behind their legs, they had tensed up and had a panicked look on their face, I quickly lowered my gun and signal for everyone in the lounge to do the same. “Sorry, come in, I need to take any weapons you have, just as a precaution” I said stepping out of the way of the door, the man pulled a gun from his back pocket and handed it to me “Go on through that door into the lounge” I said nodding at the doorway “Thank you” The lady said walking through the door. I shut the front door and grabbed 4 cans of food and 4 bottles of water. I carried them through into the lounge, everyone was sitting or standing around the table. I grabbed 4 spoons and passed the food, water and spoons out to the new guests, “Here” I said handing them out “Thank you” the lady said, the two kids tore into the food immediately “My name is Jenny, this is my husband Steve and our two kids Peter and Sarah” “We saw your sign almost as soon as you drove out of town in that bus of yours” Steve said “Is it just you kids here?” Jenny asked “Yeah, it’s just been us since this all started a few days ago” Shae said “Well where are all of your parents?” Steve asked “We don’t know, we were at school when it started and haven’t been able to get in contact with them” Tom answered, at the point Jenny noticed the baby crib “You have a baby?!” Jenny said surprised, “Today, there was a lady, we helped her from a horde of zombie but she was bit… she gave me her baby and killed herself…” Kaycee explained “What you all are doing, with helping people for no reason, it’s really honourable, thank you” Jenny said “Where have you been staying?” Shiro asked “We haven’t, we’ve been moving since it began” Steve said as the Peter and Sarah set down their cans and forks, I tapped Jess on the shoulder and asked her to follow me, we walked into the front room “We could let them stay in the other house, we have enough food and water for them” I whispered “Hmm… we don’t even know them” Jess said quietly “They have kids, and they seem nice enough, plus I took their gun from them, just in case” I replied “Ok, for a little while” Jess said, we walked back into the front room, Jenny and Steve were now eating “Jenny, Steve, if you are looking for a place to stay, there are two rooms available on the other side of the fireplace” I said “The windows are barricaded and the front door is locked, but you can always come through the fireplace” Jess said “Thank you, but we can’t, my sister lives in the city and she says that it’s empty of zombies” Jenny said “The army have cleared it out so we were on our way there” She added “Well at least stay for the night, you can take some food and water with you in the morning” Ebony said “We don’t want to intrude” Steve said “It’s no problem really”  said “Well thank you so much” Jenny said “If you follow me I’ll show you where you can sleep” Shannon said grabbing a lantern which was left behind from Carl’s group, “Come on Sarah and Peter” Steve said, Sarah and Peter got up from their seats, Peter grabbed Jenny’s hand and Sarah grabbed Peter’s, Shannon ducked into the fireplace and Jenny and Steve followed. A little while later everyone returned from the other side of the fireplace, everyone sat down, either at the table or on the couch “What board games do you have Jess?” I asked “Umm, there’s a cupboard of them, why?” Jess asked “Because it’s 5 o’clock and we have nothing to do” I said “I’ll go find something” Jess said walking into her room.
We spent another night playing board games under the light of lanterns, eventually Jenny and Steve took Sarah and Peter to bed, as Steve was ducking into the fireplace I said “I’ll leave the food on the bench, just in case you decide to leave early, your gun will be with it” “Thank you” Steve said before disappearing into the other house. It was about 10 o’clock when everyone started falling asleep “Living in a zombie apocalypse really takes a lot out of you” I thought to myself, I climbed into bed and fell asleep almost instantly, for the first night since it all began I slept peacefully, until I was pulled from sleep by screaming, my eyes jerked open, I sat up quickly and looked around, everyone else was awake and fine, more screaming “It’s coming from the other house!” I said standing up, I grabbed my gun and a lantern and walked through the fireplace, I followed the sound of screaming into the master bedroom of the other house, Ebony and Shae had walked through the fireplace with their guns raised, I pushed open the door, Jenny was in the corner with Steve, Sarah and Peter standing over her, “What’s going on?” I asked loudly, turning on my lantern. The light illuminated the room as Sarah and Peter turned, bits of flesh dripping from their mouths, I looked at Steve, he was pulling flesh from Jenny’s neck. Jenny was making a gurgling noise. Ebony and Shae turned up beside the door and saw everything that was going on in the room. Shae and Ebony raised their guns and pointed them into the room, I dropped the lantern and raised my gun too. I pointed my gun at Sarah, Shae pointed at Steve and Ebony pointed at Sarah. Peter and Sarah started walking towards us as Steve stood up from Jenny’s twitching corpse. I pulled the trigger and the gun just clicked, I heard two more clicks one from each side. I pulled the trigger again, yet another click sounded. Two more clicks from beside me, “Quick! Back through the fireplace” I said trying to slam the door, Sarah and Peter using their hands to stop the door from closing, Ebony ran back to the fireplace and ran though, followed by Shae, I came through last and pushed the plywood into place. Everyone was standing around, I pushed my weight against the plywood as someone slammed into it from the other side “Does anyone have ammo?!” I said urgently, everyone but Ebony and Shae quickly checked their guns “Empty” everyone said, the banging on the plywood got harder, I heard the wood begin cracking, “Steve’s gun! It’s on the bench, someone grab it” I shouted feeling the plywood break even more, Ebony grabbed the gun and aimed it at the fireplace. I moved out of the way and jumped over the couch as the plywood broke, Steve climbed through. Ebony quickly pulled the trigger and shot Steve, the bullet hitting him in the forehead, his head smashing into the ground. Steve stopped moving. Sarah and Peter tried climbing through next, they were small enough that they could climb through together. They climbed over Steve’s body, not even caring that the person they called ‘Dad’ just a few hours ago was dead. They stood up quickly, Ebony pointed the gun and Peter, then jumped to Sarah and back again. She closed her eyes and fired, Sarah fell to the ground, she fired again, the bullet hit Peter in the arm but he kept walking. Ebony opened her eyes to see Peter still walking she fired a third time and Peter fell back, lying on the floor next to his sister. Everyone relaxed a little, “Shit, Jenny…” I said ducking back through the fireplace, cautiously stepping over the bodies. Ebony followed through behind me with her gun raised. I quickly ran over to the room Jenny was in, the door was open from when Steve and the kids came through. I picked up the lantern and stepped into the room.

Jenny was gone from where she was sitting, blood was on the floor and walls. I walked further in with the lantern raised, the room was very big but when I dropped the lantern it broke slightly, making it give off less light which made it harder to see everything. I walked to the centre of the room when Jenny leapt out from behind the door, blood pouring from her neck and her eyes a cloudy grey. I swung the lantern hard, shattering it on the side of her head. Jenny fell to the ground, Ebony quickly shot her in the back of the head. I walked back over to the door, almost slipped in Jenny’s puddle of blood. I grabbed onto the doorframe to prevent myself from falling. Several loud bangs sounded from the other house. Ebony ducked through the fireplace and I followed. “What’s going on?” Ebony asked “There are heaps of zombies outside!” Shannon said peeking through a barricade, a hand suddenly shot through the barricade grabbing at Shannon’s face, she jumped back quickly. “Ok, Shiro, Kaycee, start loading all the weapons with ammo, Shannon, Tom and Jess, start packing the food, I’ll get the close weapons, Ebony, Shae and James, kill as many at the windows as you can.
