We drove on the main streets where we could, but many times we had to divert to smaller streets due to car crashes or large groups of zombies but we travelled rather quickly, we stopped in Hastings and the four other survivors loaded into a sedan, we continue towards the city with the sedan following behind us in the bus. We drove along the coasts, passing through destroyed towns filled with the undead, a few screams echoed out over the silence but were quickly muffled and then the silence returned. We continued along, motionless bodies lay everywhere, either killed from a survivor or there wasn’t enough left of them to come back. We continue heading towards the city, Sister Maggie giving directions of where to go. St Kilda was littered with bodies, both living and dead, we drove cautiously through not wanting to get trapped and surrounded. Once on the other side of St Kilda the animals ears perked up, the both leapt to their feet and started savagely scratching at the door, desperate to get out of the bus. Ebony put on the indicator and pulled to the side of the road. I slid open the door and the animals went running away as fast as possible. I went to chase after them but they ran as if their life depended on it. I got back in the bus and shut the door sadly. Everyone was just sitting in silence, Ebony pulled back onto the road. We stopped at the front gate of the docks, it was completed barricaded aside from a cut in the wire fence. We got out of the bus, our weapons in hand and walked onto the docks.
Blood and severed limbs littered the ground but there were no zombies around, I stooped down and grabbed a rifle that was sitting in a pool of blood, Shae looked at me questioningly “You have to take what you’re given…” I said putting the shoulder strap on. Everyone fanned out, cautiously grabbing whatever weapons were lying around. We continued walking along the docks until we rounded a pile of shipping containers. A large cargo ship was moored on one of the wharfs, there was also a large horde of zombies wandering around or smashing on the large steel door of the ship. “That has to be where the survivors were being loaded” Kaycee said hopefully “But how are we going to get there?” Shannon asked as we quickly stepped back behind the pile of shipping containers. “We have to fight through them, there is no other way to get to the ship” Tom said “Tom’s right, it’s the only way we can get there” Shiro said peeking around the corner at the zombies. Everyone else remained silent, they couldn’t think of another way to get through. “Ok, is everyone ready?” I asked checking my gun and turning the safety off.
We rounded the corner quickly and stood in a line. The zombies began moving towards us but were quickly cut down as a wave of bullets tore into the front rows. My gun fired for a few seconds but quickly ran out of ammo, I swapped to my pistol and began firing at the zombies which came too close. Eventually, everyone was using their pistols. Zombies continued falling as arrows and bullets tore into the bodies of the zombies. My gun began clicking, no more bullets flying, I quickly swapped to my machete and we began moving forward, cutting down the zombies that remained standing. We cautiously began stepping over the motionless bodies, a combination of men, women and children, all turned and now dead. The final zombies that were still standing were quickly killed. I reached into my pocket and pulled out what loose bullets I had, I loaded the bullets into the magazine and it clicked as the magazine was reloaded into my gun. Everyone cautiously stepped over the bodies. A zombie was trapped under the dead body of another, I swiftly brought my machete down. A scream of pain sounded out to my left, I stood up quickly and looked in the direction of the scream. Sister Maggie was standing there, her pickaxe embedded in a zombies head, a large, bloody bite on her ankle. She nodded silently, accepting of her fate. “I’m sorry…” I said silently, raising my pistol. I pulled the trigger and Sister Maggie’s lifeless body fell to the ground.
“What the hell are you doing!?” one of the survivors asked “She was bitten…” I said quietly, putting my gun away “It doesn’t mean you just shoot her!” the survivor shouted “You know what happens when you get bit, there is no avoiding it” James said to the survivor “Your defending him! He just shot someone!” The survivor shouted, the other survivors who I never learnt their names standing behind him “What would you have done?!” Shannon asked “Let her decide what happens, and allow her to kill herself if need be” Another survivor said stepping forward “She was accepting of her fate, she knew what was going to happen” I said quietly “You’re all monsters, fend for yourselves!” The survivor said, the other survivors who I never learnt the name of followed. “Anyone else want to leave?” I asked, everyone remained silent. A scream sounded in the distance and a horde of zombies from the city rounded the pile of shipping crates. Everyone ran up to the metal door of the ship, Tom opened the door and everyone ran in.
Tom quickly closed the door, a repetitive banging began sounding on the door. “What are we going to do n….” Tom was cut off as a zombie tore into his throat, blood sprayed everywhere as muscle and flesh were thrown to the floor. Shae screamed as Tom fell to the ground, blood still pouring from his throat. Zombies began emerging from the darkness, “RUN!” I shouted, running away from the door, not knowing where I was going to running. Ebony slipped in Tom’s blood as we ran, zombies quickly began tearing into, throwing innards around the room, as I ran Ebony’s screams of pain echoed throughout the ship. We reached a metal staircase leading to the upper deck, I ran upwards, the sound of footsteps echoing behind me. I looked through the gap between the stairs, Sarah was trailing behind, as she turned to run the stairs a zombie grabbed her and began tearing her apart. Screams echoed up the staircase, but I had to keep running. I reached the top of the stairs, a hallway extended in front of me, sunlight coming down the stairs at the end. “HURRY!” I shouted running towards the sunlight, wooden doors scattered along the hallway began shattering and curving as weight was pushed for the other side of them. I ran, not looking back as I heard door shattering behind me. I flicked a glance back, a door fell off its hinges, crushing Shannon against the wall, the zombie on the other side quickly tearing off Shannon’s jaw. I flicked my head back around and continued running as Shannon screams became filled with blood. I ran up the stairs onto the deck, the sun blinding me momentarily. My eyes adjusted to the light, zombies littered the deck, I began turned and began running towards the bridge of the ship, away from the zombies. I began running up more stairs, looking behind me to see who was still here. Shiro, Shae and Kaycee were at the bottom of the stairs, James and Jess were running across the deck. I continued running up the stairs, Kaycee and Shiro right behind me, James climbing the stairs. I stopped to catch my breath and looked over the railing, a zombie had grabbed Jess’s ankle through the stairs, she grabbed her pistol and shot it in the face, but not before it bit her, she began hobbling up the stairs but another zombie quickly grabbed her and pulled her to the ground, her screams sounded as it began tearing into her stomach. I turned back and continued running, I reached the landing at the top of the stairs and faced a wooden door. I turned the handle but the door remained shut “It’s locked!” I shouted as everyone reached the landing, James ran to the door and began trying to break the lock. I looked back over the railing, zombies were coming up the stairs. “Move!” I shouted pointing my gun at the door, I fired, shooting a hole in the door where the lock was. James pushed open the door and we ran inside.
The room was bare except for the control panel to move the ship. “Where to now?!” Shae asked “There is nothing here!” Shiro said panicked “How much ammo does everyone have?” I asked “I’m out” James said “Me too” Kaycee said “one shell” Shae said clicked her shotgun “Two bullets” Shiro said checking her gun “I’ve got 4 bullets left” I said checking my gun, “Quick, Shiro, pass me your axe” I said moving towards the door. Shiro quickly passed her axe, I wedged the axe head under the door, preventing it from opening “Everyone stack your bags against the door, we need to slow them down” I said putting my bag against the door, everyone quickly stacked their bags against the door, creating a makeshift barricade. I sat down against the control panels, directly across from the door and pointed my gun forwards, everyone sat down beside be and got ready to fight.
Static suddenly came through the radio on the control panel, I jumped to my feet and ran to the radio “HELLO!” I shouted picking it up “There’s someone there!” The voice on the other side of the radio sounded excited “Where are you?!” The voice asked “We’re on the ship at Melbourne docks!” I shouted excitedly “Isn’t it completely overrun?” The voice asked “Yeah, we need help, we’re barricaded in the bridge!” I said quickly “We’re sending help! Stay put!” The voice said “Hurry! Please!” I said urgently “There is help coming!” I said turning to the group “We just need to wait!” I added as a banging began sounding on the door. I went back and sat down against the control panel, aiming my gun back at the door. The door began curving inwards, the hinges groaning against the weight. The fell to the ground and zombies began pouring in, the sound of bullets firing echoed loudly around the room as the bodies of zombie fell to the ground, they began pushing against the pile of bags. I fired slowly, aiming cautiously to ensure that each shot would kill a zombie. Three bullets killed three zombies, the fourth hit the zombie in the neck. Bullets stopped firing and everyone stood up, ready to fight. James separated his garden shears and passed one blade to Shiro. The wall of bags fell down and we started killing zombies as they tripped over the pile. A loud rumbling sounded outside of the front window, I killed a zombie and turned to look at the rumbling. A black helicopter filled with soldiers holding guns was hovering outside of the window “GET DOWN!” I shouted, everyone dived against the control panel, covering their heads as the machine guns began firing, sending a shower of glass down on us, turning the zombies coming through the doorway into red mist. I covered my ears as the machine guns continued firing, a strong wind was now coming through the window. The machines guns stopped firing, I raised my machete above the control panel and waved it slightly, trying to indicate that we were human. “Hello?!” I shouted loudly over the whirring of the helicopter blades “How many of you are there?” Someone asked from inside the helicopter “There are five of us!” James shouted, I stood up cautiously, the helicopter flew upwards and dropped down a ladder beside the window “Climb aboard!” The voice shouted downwards. I dropped my machete, grabbed my bag from below the bodies and began climbing the ladder, everyone cautiously followed. I reached the top of a ladder, a soldier helped me climb aboard, “Thank you” I said taking a seat, wiping the blood off my face. The soldier helped Shiro climbed aboard first, followed by James, Shae and finally Kaycee. “Where are we going?” I asked “The HMAS Melbourne, off the coast of King Island, we have a base set up there”, I breathed a sigh of relief, “Finally, somewhere where the army will look out for us…” I thought to myself, relaxing for the first time in days. Everyone closed their eyes, finally feeling completely safe. I looked at everyone, they were coated in blood. Kaycee started twitching slightly, then more violently. She opened her eyes slowly, they were a cloudy grey. Kaycee groaned slowly and went to bite Jamie, I quickly kicked her in the stomach, sending her out the open helicopter door. “I am not dying now…” I said sitting back down “Not after everything that we’ve been through…”. I shut my eyes and listened to the whirring of the helicopter blades.
