I was silent for a few moments, thinking over everything Aro had just told me. He made it sound like a had a choice, but I didn’t and we both knew it. If I said no he would kill me and my parents and possibly everyone in Forks. I couldn’t risk their lives even if it meant that I would become his personal blood bank. But Aro knew that, he knew that when he called me. I loved my parents, I would do anything to protect them.
“Yes,” I said quietly. I looked up, I could see Alec and Jane watching me from behind Aro. “You have a deal.”
“Wonderful, I would have hated to drain your blood.” Aro stood, “Alec, Jane, show Chloe around. She will be staying with us for a few weeks.”
“Weeks?” I jumped up. “Weeks? I can’t stay here for weeks. I have to go home, you have my blood.”
Aro’s eyes flashed back to me. “You will stay until I am satisfied.” He stepped dangerously close to me. “Don’t worry, you’ll be back in time for the wedding. I’m sure Bella wants you there.”
“I’m not going.” I seethed, stepping back.
“But you are dear, Bella has already received your reply.” He smiled, “you’ll be taking my gift with you.” He turned walked towards the door. “You’ll grow to like it here. At least your mother did, she was very happy here.” He looked back at me, “Jane, get some new clothes for our guest. If she is going to live with us she will also dress like us.”
Jane flashed me a glare before she nodded and followed Aro out the door. I was left alone in the huge room with Alec. I sank back into my chair. I had just signed my life away. I would be here for weeks, surrounded by vampires who could snap my neck before I could even scream for help.
“Chloe.”
I jumped, Alec was standing right beside my chair. I guess I’d have to get used to that, people sneaking up on me. “Yeah?”
“Are you ready? Its getting late and there is a lot to see.”
“Oh, yeah.” I stood up and stepped away from the table. “Lead on, Yoda.”
He frowned, “Yoda? What is a Yoda?”
“From Star Wars.” I sighed at his confused expression. “I can’t believe you’ve never seen Star Wars. What do you do all the time? You don’t even need to sleep.”
“I read,” he said. “I also paint.”
“Still, you have to watch Star Wars.” I insisted as he started walking towards that were across the room from the doors we had entered by. “So where are we going?”
“To your room,” he said, not looking back at me.
“Hey, I’m not that easy, you’re going to have to buy me dinner first.” I said smirking.
He stopped and looked at me, the confused expression back on his face. “Dinner?”
“It’s a joke, Alec. Please tell me you know what jokes are.” I teased, trying not to think about the choice I made.
“Yes, I know what a joke is.” He snapped. He walked a few feet before looking back at me. “What would I buy you for dinner?”
“Pizza,” I responded without thinking. “I like pizza.”
He nodded then kept walking. I followed him in silence down hallways and up stairs until we stopped at a plain wood door.
“This is your room while you’re here.” He pushed the door open and my jaw dropped. I had seen some pretty fancy rooms but this room made all others look like dirty wholes.
“This is my room?” I asked as I stepped inside. The bed was huge. I didn’t know beds came that size. “This is huge.”
“You don’t like it?” Alec asked. He looked concerned.
“I’m just not used to rooms this large.” I walked over to another door and opened it. It was a walk in closet, it was full. “I think someone forgot to take their clothes with them.”
“No, those are for you.” Alec said from beside me. “Aro wants you to be comfortable while you are here.”
I nodded slowly as I looked around the rest of the room. There were some many things that I didn’t even know what they were. I walked over to the bed and flopped down. “Will he really let me go?” I asked quietly.
“Yes.” I felt the bed sink beside me. “Aro is a man of his word, he will keep his word as long as you keep yours.”
I nodded as I sat up. “What else do you know about my mother?”
Alec stood up. “I can’t tell you anything else Chloe. You will have to ask Aro if you want to know.” He walked toward the door then glanced back at me. “Everything she did she did for you, to keep you safe. Aro couldn’t protect both of you and she knew it.” He pulled the door open, “she wanted you to be happy. That’s all she ever wanted.” He stepped out, “good night Chloe.” He closed the door behind him.
I stared at the closed door. My mother gave her life so that I could live mine and here I was, the place that she died to protect me from. Would she understand why I decided to stay? I couldn’t leave, I couldn’t do that. I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life running. I pulled my phone out and turned it on. I had two more voice mails, both from Jasper. I took a deep breath and deleted them. I needed to forget about him, I needed to forget about all of them. I didn’t belong in Forks and I never would. If I went back for the wedding that would be the last time I would see any of them. As much as I wanted to go back and never leave I couldn’t, not now. Not now that I knew what I was capable of. One drop of blood is all it would take to kill them. One drop and I would never forgive my self.
