I sat still staring out my window for almost an hour. Why was this happening? I stood up and walked over to my window, closing it. I didn’t want any more surprises today. How could Jake have almost said he loved me? He doesn’t know anything about me, my family, or my past. I sighed and walked down stairs. Maybe I should leave sooner than planned. My being here just seemed to keep causing problems.
I was half way through my history assignment when I heard a knock at the door. I glanced at my watch as I walked to the door, Bella and Charlie had been gone for almost two hours. I opened the door, praying that it wouldn’t be Jake.
“Leah,” I stared at her for a minute. “What are you doing here?”
“It’s nice to see you too,” she shoved her hands into her pockets. “Can we talk?”
I nodded, “sure, come in.” I led her into the living room and sat beside her on the couch. “What’s up?” I asked, curious as to why she needed to talk to me.
“I’m here about Jake,” she said after a minute.
“Did he ask you to try to get me to change my mind?” I demanded.
She shook her head,” no. He doesn’t even know I’m here. I just want to explain why he acted the way he did. I am not trying to excuse the way he acted.”
I sighed, “ok, explain away.”
She smirked slightly, “ever since Jake found you in the woods he’s been drawn to you. I think we all have. He stopped thinking about Bella as much and started thinking about you. As you got closer, well you became all he thought about and after what happened at the beach…”
“Wait,” I said, interrupting her, “how do you know what happened at the beach? Did he tell you?”
“He hasn’t told you very much about werewolves, has he?”
I shook my head, “no.”
She nodded and then was silent for a minute, like she was thinking about how to explain something to me. “When we are in wolf form,” she shook her head. “I can’t believe he didn’t tell you this. If you decided to hurt him, I’ll help.”
I smiled, “thanks for the offer, but tell me what?”
"When we’re in wolf form we share each other’s thoughts, it’s how we can win any fight, we know what each person is going to do. But if someone’s thoughts start to wonder, we also hear that.”
“Wait; let me get this straight, you know what happened on the beach because Jake thought about it?”
She nodded, “he thought about every little detail, more than once.”
I felt my face go red, “who else knows?”
“The whole pack,” she grinned, “but don’t worry the guys are so jealous that they would never say anything.”
I looked at her for a minute, “then you also know what happened later.”
She nodded, “and what happened today. I know you are just trying to do what you think is best.”
“Jake doesn’t see it that way,” I said quietly, “he probably hates me.”
Leah shook her head, “he could never hate you. But he was a little confused when he was here earlier.”
“He was confused? What about me?” I shook my head, “One minute he’s acting all seductive and the next he’s like a lost puppy.”
Leah nodded, “unfortunately he took advice from Paul before he came to see you.”
I rolled my eyes, “and what did Paul tell him? That he could win me over with a few good words and a kiss or two?”
She smiled, “something like that. Paul seemed to think that for you to kiss Jake the way you did that you must want a lot more than just a kiss.”
I felt my face turn red again. “What else did Paul say?”
“He told Jake that all he had to do was to get you to give in to those wants and if that didn’t work to use the L word.”
“Love,” I sighed. “Am I anything more to him than a replacement for Bella?”
“Chloe, listen to me, Jake knew he never had a chance with Bella one Edward came back. Then he met you, you make him so happy.”
“But he still loves Bella,” I said.
“Yes, he does.” Leah admitted, “but deep down he knows Bella is not the one for him."
“How does he know that?”
“Because he didn’t imprint on her.”
“What’s imprinting?” I asked.
“He really didn’t tell you anything about us, did he?”
I shook my head, “I never asked.”
She nodded, “imprinting is when we meet our sole mates, it’s like suddenly nothing matters but the other person and making them happy. You would do anything for them.”
“Jake didn’t imprint on Bella?”
“No,” she said. “And he never will. If it doesn’t happen the first time you meet someone it never will.”
I nodded slowly, “then he won’t imprint on me either.” Part of my was happy about that, but another part, a larger part, was very sad.
“I don’t know,” Lead admitted, “there’s something different about you Chloe. We all feel it. It’s like you draw everyone to you.”
“Yeah, I draw everyone into trouble.”
Leah rolled her eyes, “what’s happened is not your fault.” She stood up, “think about what I’ve said. Don’t give up on Jake, not yet. Give him another chance, he’s a great guy.”
I nodded and followed her to the door. “I’ll think about it.”
Leah opened the door, “well even if you ignore him, we can still be friends.”
I smiled, “I’d like that.”
She smiled and left, closing the door. Bella may not be the one for Jake, but I wasn’t either and that hurt more than I imagined it could.
