“Chloe, wait.” I heard Jacob behind me but I didn’t stop until I reached my car. “Where are you going?”
I opened my door, “I’m going to get answers.”
“Please,” he touched my back. “Can we talk about this?”
I took a shaky breath, more than anything I wanted to turn around and kiss him, but I couldn’t. I wouldn’t be any ones second choice. “There is nothing to talk about.” I heard him sigh. “You’re in love with Bella, I should have known that. And let’s face it, I am nothing like Bella.” I shrugged his hand off. “Bye Jake.” I got my car and closed the door, not looking back as I drove away.
I stopped just outside of Forks; it felt like someone had stabbed me and was twisting the knife. How could I let myself even think that he actually liked me? Was he just using me to make Bella jealous? I took a few deep breaths and forced myself to bury the feelings I was starting to have for him. I shook my head and pulled back onto the road, I would be fine; it wasn’t like I had completely fallen for him.
40 minutes later I turned into the Cullen’s drive way. I knew that this was the only place I could get answers, but that didn’t stop me from feeling very nervous and a little scared. I parked and stared at the house for a minute. I took and deep breath and stepped out; I wasn’t going to get any answers if I stayed in my car.
The front door opened as I reached the top step. Alice stood in the door way.
“Chloe,” she seemed surprised to see me. “What are you doing here?"
But I knew it was an act. “Cut the crap Alice, I know you can see the future. You knew I was coming, and why.” Bella’s diary had told me a lot more than just that they were vampires.
Her eyes widened, “come in.” I followed her inside; her family was waiting for us.
“How’d you know?” Alice asked.
“I’m not stupid,” I would never admit how I found out. “But I’m the one asking the questions, not you.” I looked at each of them, they didn’t belong here. They shouldn’t even exist, but then again neither should Jake. “Why didn’t you stop her from attacking me?”
“We didn’t know she was going to,” Carlisle said calmly.
“How could you not know?” I demanded.
“Could we sit down?” Esme asked. I nodded slightly and followed her into the living room.
“Explain,” I said as I sat.
“I can’t see anything about your future, it’s like something is blocking me from seeing anything related to you. I couldn’t even see that you were coming to Forks.” I stared at Alice for a minute.
“What about the rest of you? Do your…gifts work on me?”
“No,” Edward said instantly. “It’s rather annoying.”
“I’m so sorry,” I said sarcastically. I looked at Alice, “has this ever happened before?”
“I can’t see anything related to the werewolves either,” she said.
“So I’m a werewolf?” I demanded.
“No,” Carlisle said quietly, “there is something that seems to protect you from our gifts, as you put it.”
“Like what?” I asked. What made me so special?
“I don’t know, we may never know."
I stared at them all for a minute, “I want the truth, and I want you to tell me everything. Staring with why the person who attacked me is after Bella.”
Edward looked at the floor for minute before he raised his eyes to me. “Last year Bella was taken by James, a vampire that was passing through. Victoria, the one who attacked you, was his mate. I killed James to save Bella.”
“So now she’s going to kill Bella to get back at you,” I guessed. He nodded. “Wow. How does Bella feel about all of this?”
“She doesn’t know,” Edward said, looking away.
“You haven’t told her?” I demanded.
“No, she doesn’t need to know.”
“Like hell she doesn’t,” I snapped as I stood. “It’s her life; she has a right to know.”
“I’m protecting her,” his voice raised ever so slightly.
“Oh, so anytime Victoria gets close your going to fly off with Bella? Brilliant plan, just brilliant.”
“What I do to protect her is none of you business.”
“It is if it almost gets me killed,” I yelled.
“We would have kept you safe,” he yelled, jumping up from the couch.
“So that’s what you call keeping some one safe? It’s amazing Bella is still alive then.”
He seethed, “you have no idea what I’ve done to keep her safe.”
“You’ve lied to her and almost gotten people she cares about killed. Did I miss anything?” He didn’t respond. “She would be better off with Jake; at least he could keep her safe.”
Jasper was between us in an instant. “Chloe, I think it’s time for you to leave.”
“Fine, but this isn’t over.” I walked towards the door. “Edward, you tell her, or I will.” I walked out and slammed the door behind me.
