Chloe crawled backward, away from the pile of clothes. She could feel the sand scrapping her hands but she didn’t stop. She slid behind the log that she had once sat on with Jake and gasped in air. He was dead. Dead. He bit her. She franticly looked at her arm. She wiped the blood off with her shirt. The mark was the perfect bite imprint. It burned, like her arm was on fire. She slowly eased up and looked over the top of the log. She expected another to appear. To try to kill her. She stood up slowly, her hands shaking. She started to move towards her car as her phone rang.
Chloe jerked her phone out, not even looking to see who it was. “Hello.”
“You’re still alive.” A male voice with a slight accent said. “Excellent.”
“Who is this?” She asked, forcing her voice not to crack.
“An old friend.” He said replied.
“You sent the vampire to kill me.” Chloe stated.
“No, I sent Charles to turn you, at least that’s what he thought.”
“Why?” She demanded. “Who are you?”
“Its very simple actually. I told Charles that you would make a great addition to the family and he could ear his freedom by turning you and bringing you to me.” He was silent for a moment. “Either he would turn you or he would die trying. To him it seemed an easy, but he didn’t know about your…gift.”
“He died.”
“I know. I can’t believe I’ve found you, after all this time.” He said quietly. “When Victoria said she found you, I didn’t believe it. Not until she sent me your blood.” He sighed. “It really is a shame Charles had to die this way. His bite will leave an interesting scare, but wont turn you. You’re immune to our venom.”
“Aro.” Chloe whispered.
“You do remember.” He’s voice became cheerful. “Wonderful, that will make this much easier.”
“Make what easier?” She demanded. “Why did he die? Why did you send him after me?”
“I had to know if you were your mother’s daughter, and you are.”
“You knew my mother?” Chloe asked quietly as she opened her car door.
“Yes, your mother,” his sounded as if he was remembering happier times. “Your mother was very special.”
“What do you want from me?” She asked.
“Its very simple. Now that I’ve found you, you have two options. One, you come to Italy, are put under my protection, and you will help me from time to time. In return I will ensure that you have a long healthy life.”
“Why should I trust you? Your pet, Charles, could have killed me.”
“But he didn’t. He didn’t because your blood is toxic to vampires. It burns us from the inside out, turning us to ash. It is the most painful way to die.” Chloe was silent, he continued. “Years ago, long before you were born, the shape shifters tried to use your kind as weapons. It did not work. They became consumed with the need to control you. Your ancestors fought back, they were massacred. We thought all of you had died, until eighteen years ago when I found your mother. She was a few months pregnant with you. My first instinct was to kill her, kill both of you.”
“Why didn’t you?” Chloe asked.
“Because your mother begged me not to and I, I wanted to help her so did my wife. So we made a deal, she lived with us, had you and worked for us. She was our ultimate weapon. You were to follow in her footsteps but a few months after you were born she smuggled you to the orphanage, then you were adopted. There were two of my brethren that believed both of you should be killed. They killed all in the orphanage, but you had already been adopted. It was impossible to find you, we tried. But then I saw you in Italy, I knew it was you instantly, you have your mother’s eyes.”
