I looked blankly at Jake for a minute, “I don’t have a swimsuit.”
“That’s ok,” Paul said, winking at me. I looked from Jake to Paul and back.
“I am not going skinny dipping.” They exchanged glances and burst out laughing.
“Don’t worry,” Jake said grinning, “I wouldn’t invite him if I wanted to go skinny dipping.”
“What they are trying, but failing to explain,” Leah said as she walked toward us. “Is that after these little powwows we always go for a swim and we’d like you to join us.” She flashed Paul a glare, “and they promise to keep their paws off.”
“Paws? Really Leah? Thanks,” Paul spat. “And what if she wants these paws on her?”
“I don’t,” I said before Leah could answer. “Who else is staying?” If I was going to strip down to my underwear I really didn’t want Seth there.
“Paul, Leah, Quil, and me,” Jake said.
“The others already left,” Leah added. “So, yes or no?”
“It’s yes,” Paul said, “unless you’re too shy.”
“We can just go,” Jake said, giving me a way out. “It’s late anyway.”
I smiled, “no, a swim sounds fun.” I took my shoes off and set them on the log as I discreetly watched Jake take his shirt off. Paul had already stripped down to his boxers and Leah was taking her jean off. I was suddenly very thankful that my bra and panties matched. I took a deep breath and unzipped my dress and stepped out of it. I could feel someone watching me as I folded my dress and put it with my shoes. I looked up to see Paul and Jake staring at me. I rolled my eyes and walked past them.
“Oh, and Paul,” I called as I headed to the water. “I’m not shy.” I heard them snickering behind me and imagined that Paul, and maybe Jake were staring at my ass.
“Hey Chloe,” I stopped and turned around; Jake was walking towards me, looking very hot. “Race you to the water.”
I grinned, “you’re on.” I took off running and could see Jake right beside me. “I’m going to win.”
He laughed, “I don’t think so.” He turned and talked me, making us both fall into the water as a wave hit us. I heard people laughing as I shoved Jake off me and stood up, shivering.
“This is freezing,” I gasped.
He stood, laughing, “you look good wet.”
I glared at him, “jerk.” I said, fighting a smile.
“Jerk?” He put his hand over his heart. “I’m hurt."
I rolled my eyes and reached down, splashing him. “Ha.”
He wiped the water out of his eyes, still grinning and grabbed my harm, pulling me down into the water, with me landing on him. I could hear the other laughing and splashing each other a few feet away. I stood up and walked deeper into the water. I could hear Jake behind me but I didn’t turn around. It was killing me to be this close to him, knowing that he wanted Bella, not me.
“Chloe,” I could feel him behind me. “Still cold?”
I turned around and nodded, forcing myself not to step closer to him. He moved closer and slid his arms around me.
“Better?”
I nodded, “yeah, how are you not cold?”
He grinned, “I’m ten degrees hotter than you.”
“Really?”
“Yeah,” he pulled me closer, “my temperature is a toasty 108 degrees.”
“Is that why you enjoy swimming in this freezing water?”
He grinned down at me. “Actually we’ve never done this before.” He glanced over where the others were drying off so they could get dressed. “I think they just wanted to see if you belong here.”
“And?” I asked as I moved my cold hands to his perfect chest. “Do I belong?”
“Yes,” I shivered again but this time it wasn’t from the cold. I was vaguely aware of a car door closing as I stared into Jake’s eyes. Why did I have to feel this way about him?
He broke eye contact and pulled away slight. “We should go, it’s getting late.” But based on the way he was looking at me the last thing he wanted to do was leave.
“Jake,” I closed the distance between us, this was my choice and I knew what I wanted, even if it would break my heart later. “We can be friends tomorrow,” I whispered as I kissed him. His arms were around me almost instantly, pulling me tightly against him. My hands went to his neck, keeping him close to me. I felt one of his hands move to my hip, my skin burning under his touch. I pulled away, gasping for air. I wanted him even closer to me.
“Jake,” I breathed. We needed to stop; we were just going to get hurt.
“Shh,” he whispered, pressing his lips back to mine. I pulled him closer, my fingers twisting into his hair. His lips moved to my neck as I moaned, his hands drifting lower on my body. I couldn’t do this; it wasn’t fair to either of us. I pushed him away and stumbled back. We stared at each other, neither of us wanting to stop. His eyes full of a hunger that excited and terrified me.
“It’s getting late.” He nodded. We walked out of the water and got dressed in silence.
The drive back to Bella’s was painfully silent. I didn’t know what to say to him. I knew I shouldn’t have kissed him but that didn’t stop me from wanting a lot more than just a kiss. I looked up as he parked in front of Bella’s house.
“We should do this again some time.”
I looked over at him, “what? Make out in our underwear?” I asked, trying not to smile.
“Or just hang out.”
I looked at the house then back at him. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
“Why?"
“I’m leaving in less than a month Jake,” I sighed. “Maybe we should just forget tonight happened.” I looked over to see hurt and anger in his eyes.
“Yeah, sure, whatever.” He looked away.
I knew I hurt him, but it was better this way, for both of us. “Bye Jake.” I got out of his truck and walked inside, not looking back. I went straight to my room, not speaking to Bella. I closed my door and leaned against as I felt the tears start to fall.
