I slowly sank into the chair Jake had been sitting in. A war, between the wolves and the vampires, there would be deaths on both sides. “There has to be some way to stop this,” I said quietly. “Some loop hole or something.”

“There isn’t,” Jake said. “Bella can’t die, or be turned.”

“Turned?” I asked. “Why would Bella be turned?”

“It’s what she wants, and Edward will turn her before he lets her die.” He crouched beside me. “You need to talk to Bella, show her how crazy this is.”

I shook my head, “there isn’t anything I can do.” I stood up and stepped around Jake. “I’m sorry, but Bella will never listen to me.”

“You have to at least try,” he insisted, stepping closer.

I took a step back, feeling the wall brush my back. “I…I’ll try. But you need to come up with another plan.”

“You are the only plan, Chloe.” Jake sighed, “there isn’t anything I can do. I don’t control the pack, if Bella dies they will attack.”

“Alright, I get it, I’ll talk to her.” I took a step towards him. “But don’t count on it working. Bella and I aren’t as close as we used to be.” I glanced at my watch. “I should go.”

“Or you could stay,” he suggested, heating the air as he moved closer. “My dad won’t be back till tomorrow.”

“Jacob Black, are you trying to seduce me?” I asked, smiling for what felt like the first time in months.

“That depends, is it working?” He asked, stepping closer.

I took a step back, I could feel my face start to heat up. My back was pressed against the wall again. “No,” I said quietly.

Jake closed the distance between them. “Then why is your heart pounding? It sounds like a drum.”

“You’re making me nervous,” I admitted. “I really have to leave,” I said looking away, trying to slide past Jake.

Jake pressed his hand to the wall, blocking my escape. “I know you want to kiss me. Just give in. What’s the worst that could happen?”

“The worst?” I asked, meeting his eyes. “I won’t lead you on Jake, I’m not staying.”

“I know,” he said, suddenly serious. “I know I’ll just get my heart broken again. But it’s my choice, Chloe. I know how this will end.” He brushed his lips against mine. “I can handle it.”

“Maybe I can’t,” I whispered. “I won’t intentionally hurt you.”

Jake took a step back. “This isn’t over,” he said quietly. “What now?” He asked as Seth stepped out of the woods.

“It’s Sam, he wants to see you.” Seth glanced at me, “you ok, Chloe? You look a little pale.”

“Yeah, I’m fine. It’s been a long day,” I said. “What’s Sam want?”

“He heard about Bella,” Seth glanced at Jake. “He’s already planning the attack.”

Jake cursed and looked back at me. “I’ll talk to Sam; you go back to the Cullen’s and talk some sense into Bella.” He ran his fingers through his hair, “I’ll call you later, unless you want to meet back here?”

I swallowed hard; coming back here would not be a good idea. “I rented the blue beach house a few miles north of here. There’s a spare key under the door mat. I’ll meet you there; bring Sam if you can convince him to listen.”

“Can I come to?” Seth asked. “I’ve always wanted to go into that house.”

I smiled, “sure, bring Leah too if you want.” I stepped away from the wall. “I’ll see you later, hopefully I’ll have good news.” I could feel Jake’s eyes on me as I walked to my car. But I didn’t look back; I had to keep pushing him away. If he knew why I really left he’d try to protect me and I couldn’t let him do that.

I sat in my car, staring at the Cullen’s house. So much had change since my first visit. I took a deep breath and opened my door as the front door opened, Alice, Jasper, and Edward stepped out.

“Hi,” I said awkwardly. “How’s Bella?”

“The same,” Edward said. “Have you changed your mind?”

I shook my head, “no. I’m not giving Bella my blood, how did you find out anyway?”

“I told him,” Jasper admitted. “I thought you might be able to help.”

“I suppose everyone else knows then?” I asked, more than slightly annoyed.

“Just me,” Alice said. “We haven’t told the others, they have enough to worry about.”

“And they don’t need to know how dangerous I am,” I said.

“Exactly,” Alice said. “I understand why you left. I may be the only one,” she glared at Jasper. Either she knew what had happened between us or she thought he should have told them who I was right after they met me. Alice looked back at me, “but thank you for trying to keep us safe.”

I forced a smile, so Jasper hadn’t told them why I really left. Maybe he didn’t know Aro hadn’t given me a choice. Maybe he thought I went to Aro to learn about my mother. “I need to talk to Bella.” I pushed my hands into my pockets and stepped towards them. “Jake told me what will happen if she dies, or is turned.”

“Chloe, please,” Edward pleaded, reaching for my arm. “You can’t tell her. She’s under enough strain as it is. Carlisle is trying to figure this out.”

“And what if she dies, Edward?” I asked.

“Then we’ll protect ourselves,” Alice insisted.

“They outnumber you, vastly. And many of them are just waiting for an excuse to kill you all,” I insisted. “What about everyone else that lives in Forks? There will be collateral damage, everyone knows it.”

“What do you what us to do?” Edward demanded. “None of us want a war.”

“Keep Bella alive and human,” I said, “long enough so I can figure out how to fix this.”

“Why should we trust you?” Alice asked, as she gave a look that clearly said she didn’t trust me. Jasper must have told her.

“Because I’m the only person that might be able to stop this war,” I said.

Edward considered that for a moment, “and if you can’t?”

“Then we’re all dead.” I stepped back to my car. “I’ll be back in the morning, and you will let me talk to Bella.”
