Bruce and Tony checked separate monitors reviewing the vitals of the woman still unconscious in the lab. It had been half a day since they rescued her from the Hydra base.
"How can I not find a single thing to identify this chick?!" Tony says exasperated at his screen "It is not possible that in this decade someone has never been fingerprinted"
"We won't be able to question her once she wakes up", Bruce started "Looks like she has some extensive damage to her vocal cords and it looks recent"
"Steve and Natasha said she let out a scream that could wake the dead alerting them to her location," Tony explained.
"We should be able to repair the damage but the swelling has to be down before we can operate - plus I'd rather not operate on a patient that doesn't know they are going under," Bruce explained closing down his monitor. "We should move her to a more comfortable space soon Tony. We don't know when she'll wake up"
"I agree, I will have a room set up for her on this floor." Tony said, "I think we should keep her in the lab for the rest of the night for monitoring." Bruce nodded his agreement.
----------
"Just a routine mission - we don't need the whole team," Sam said adding air quotes around "routine mission"
"Sam," Steve said, rubbing the bridge of his nose - he had been getting chewed out by his best friends for the better part of an hour after returning from the mission.
Bucky was glaring at his friend, "If the intel is not 100% then you need the whole damn team."
"Listen," Steve started annoyed
"No you listen, Steve, we are a team and by leaving us behind you let the rest of the team be in more danger because of it," Sam lectured, "you don't go into combat without all your assets."
"Fine. You guys are right. Mistakes were made but again intel was showing we were okay," Steve sighed
Bucky leaned against the wall crossing his arms, "Good - when is debriefing?"
"You're joking, right? Both of you lectured me for over an hour and now it's over?" Steve said incredulously
"Yeah, I'm simple - just need to be told I'm right and everything is good," Bucky said shrugging his shoulder, and Sam laughed in agreement
"Jerk," Steve said getting up and shoving Bucky
"Punk," Bucky replied and the three men headed to their floor to await debriefing.
------
The following morning the Avengers all sat around the large table in the conference room. Taking their perspective seats and look at the monitor hologram in the middle of the table.
"We got a little more than we bargained for on this last trip boys and girls," Tony said looking at the display of the base in front of them. Noticing the nods from around the table he continued "We gained a lot of intel from the base, a decent amount of Hydra soldiers, and rescued a hostage."
Bucky turned to Steve at the word hostage and raised an eyebrow. His friend never mentioned a hostage. He looked over at Sam and saw he was giving his friend the same look.
"Hostage?" Sam asked
"We don't know much about her or really anything, to be honest. We can tell she was at the base for a while but can't find anything about her in any database; it's like she's a ghost. She will be moving to her own room on the Medical floor for observation this morning. She's been unconscious since we rescued her and won't be able to talk for a while," Tony said, swiping the model to show the woman lying in the lab.
"In addition to her bruises and other injuries she is suffering from she also has severe vocal hemorrhaging and we won't be able to operate until some of the swelling has gone down," Bruce explained to the confused faces
Natasha shivered. She had seen and done a lot in her life but the sound that girl made in the cell made her heart hurt. Walking into the room she could almost feel the pain that the woman had gone through.
"What intel were we able to get from the base when we left?" Clint asked. Seeing Natasha and Steve look uncomfortable at the topic of the girl in the lab.
"Well," Tony started and swiped the hologram again and different images appeared.
"Sir, the patient is waking up," F.R.I.D.A.Y announced
Bruce and Tony got up and rushed to the lab, hopeful to get there before the woman was startled. Natasha followed keeping pace - she didn't want the girl to be alone.
The remaining members looked at Steve to explain further.
"Well, Cap?" Clint said looking at Steve pointedly
"When we were going through the base we were checking the main rooms for intel and all of a sudden we heard a scream - it was unlike anything I have ever heard - we could hear her pain - feel her pain." Steve said, remembering back to the noise, "Natasha found the room first and when I got to her she was trying to get the door open but couldn't. When we broke through there was a girl - the one in the lab - lying on a small table her arms were strapped down and so were her legs. When Natasha got her free I carried her into the quinjet." Steve explained
The three men looked at Steve and for the first time were happy they were excluded from the mission. Bucky reached over and put his hand on his shoulder receiving a small smile from him.
