Chapter 40

"Steve," Bucky said through the comms "Evelyn has the location of the hostage. They are in the west corridor"

"We will clear the way for you Buck," Steve said

Evelyn led Bucky through the hallways towards the other hostage. She followed the tendril she sent out to search. "We're on our way - hold on - we will save you," she sent through the link. She was punched in the gut with a feeling of recognition and fear. The hostage pulled on the link trying to show urgency.

"Bucky we have to hurry!" Evelyn said pulling against him. A moment later Bucky shoved her against the wall as he shielded her and shot upcoming Hydra agents.

Once he verified they were dead he turned his gaze on Evelyn; eyes full of worry and panic. "Stay with me Evelyn - I can't keep you safe if you aren't with me." Evelyn nodded her head as more gunshots came from ahead.

"Bucky - we found the room and cleared the halls. Evelyn needs to hurry up and get here. We can't get through a barrier blocking us from getting into where the hostage is being kept." Steve said into the comm.

Rushing down the hall they met Steve and Natasha standing looking at the wall. Wanda was using her powers to investigate the invisible wall.

Wanda looked at the pair "It's a magic barrier. I just need to make a small hole and we should be able to break through." Evelyn watched as Wanda's power left her fingers and began to try and penetrate the wall.

Almost instantly Wanda's face paled, "There's so much pain and anger. I can't hold this long." A small tear began in the barrier and Evelyn went and placed her hand on it sending her positive thoughts and memories of the Avengers through. As if a hand had grabbed her she was pulled through the barrier and Wanda shot back.

"Evelyn!!" Bucky screamed as he ran forward and began hitting the wall. As Steve and Natasha ran to Wanda.

Steve checked her pulse as her eyes fluttered open. "Get in that room. She's not safe - there's too much hate". Wanda said fear in her eyes.

"If you hurt her I will kill you!" Bucky screamed as he continued to hit the barrier with his vibranium arm. Sending shockwaves through the wall.

"Tony - we need you," Steve said into comms but was met with only static. "Nat - take Wanda to the quinjet and get the others. I think this barrier fried the comms."

As Natasha and Steve help Wanda up she takes a deep breath. "Take me to the wall - you'll never get in without my help".

As Evelyn is pulled through the barrier she takes in the surroundings of the cell that was identical to hers. The Doctor is leaning over a female body and trying to get a needle through another shield the woman has placed over herself.

"Stupid girl - I knew we should have completed the wipe before giving your more power," the Doctor said as he struggled.

"Get away from her," Evelyn said her voice cold. Being away from Bucky was causing the cloud to swirl in her mind but she kept focusing on the need to save the girl on the table.

"I should have known you'd find her. It was hard enough keeping you two apart. Well, at least one of the Soldiers got his bride before the Avengers came. I wonder if Mr. Pierce would agree to take this one as a substitute once I've dispatched you? You do look similar," the Doctor leered at her.

Evelyn narrowed her eyes and with the Doctor standing she was able to take the woman's features in and nearly passed out when she recognized the body on the table. "Grace"

Natasha supported Wanda's weight as Steve pulled Bucky away from the wall. "Let me go - I have to get her out of there!" Bucky screamed pulling against his friend's hold.

"Buck - for Christ's sake let Wanda weaken it," Steve said holding tighter. "She can't do anything with you beating the hell out of it."

"Once I have a crack it will likely throw me back so let me go, Nat," Wanda said standing tall. "You two hit the wall when I give you the signal. Bucky - you get her out of there and get her safe home. I won't lose her like I lost Pietro."

Bucky nodded as Steve let him go and they positioned themselves ready to hit the wall. "I won't lose her - let's get my girl"

Evelyn stared at her little sister's thin frame on the table. Wearing dirty scrubs, her hair matted, and breathing rapidly.

"You believed we'd kill someone with her gifts?" the Doctor laughed as he walked around the table toward Evelyn. "Two empath children in the same family - it was a gift. Killing one family and getting two new brides."

It felt as if Evelyn's insides were on fire. "She was alive - this whole time?" she whispered

"Alive and getting the same training as you dear. Unfortunately, there were some complications when it came to her injections but as you can feel the powers are there," the Doctor smugly gestured to the room as if the power was his own to command.

Evelyn's eyes shot from Grace's body to the Doctor; feeling her entire body fill with rage - and unleashed it on the man.
