Chapter 44

As she hit the ground all the air was rushed out of Evelyn's body as she watched the jet spin uncontrollably. Reacting out of instinct her hand shot out forward and she watched as her power stopped the jet's spinning as she began to lower it back to the ground she heard the sound of gravel crunching under feet and her head snapped over to see Richard Pierce 500 yards away.

"Hello, my bride. It's been too long," he said sneering at her.

Her head was spinning as she slowly stood up. Remembering lessons growing up about dangerous predators and quick movements. If Jacob's intel could be trusted and Richard was indeed a new soldier - then he was definitely dangerous.

He continued to walk towards her as she trained her eyes on him. Listening closely to the sounds of the jet steading in the air. "Richard," she said cooly.

"I wondered how the serum would affect you. The last time I saw you had to be sedated after it began breaking your body down. I'm happy to see it didn't and you recovered well," Richard said eyeing her up and down. "It suits you."

Evelyn let out a cruel laugh, "Suits me? After you dragged me from my burning home they tortured me inside and out. I prayed for death some days."

"That's no way to thank your husband for your gift or for saving you from being assaulted," he said darkly.

"Let me show you my appreciation," Evelyn said her eyes glowing as the ground began to shake. She picked a small boulder and shot it at him and he moved quickly to sidestep it as she continued to send items at him as he ran towards her.

"This is why I chose you, Evelyn," Richard said as he raised his arm up stopping a piece of log from hitting him in the face. "So powerful."

He continued to gain ground from her as she increased the pace of throwing items. The quicker she threw items with her power the more her head started to throb and her vision began to blur. Her aim began to get sloppier and he gained ground and before she knew it he was in front of her. "But so sloppy"

Evelyn sent a rush of all the pain she felt towards him and he backhanded her into a boulder. "You are not to use that power on me wife. That power is to be used against our enemies."

Evelyn blinked as the glow was gone from her eyes and reached behind her head and gingerly touched her head and flinched at the pain. Her hand was covered in blood and she knew she didn't have much longer until she lost consciousness. Looking from Richard to the jet she knew they would fight to keep her safe and could get killed. She reached her power out and tried to get the jet to go. As she reached her power out Richard grasped her neck with his hand and began to squeeze.

"Now, now. You don't want to ruin my fun, do you? I think I'd like a word with Captain America about how we improved the serum he fought so hard to get destroyed and I plan on killing the Winter Soldier for touching what is mine." Richard said as he squeezed.

Evelyn's eyes fluttered as her air supply was cut - grasping at Richard's hand trying to get it off of her. Suddenly she heard the ring of Steve's shield against Richard causing him to release her neck. She took deep breaths and coughed trying to fill her lungs back up.

"Get. Your. Hands. Off. Of. Her," Bucky's voice came from her side - cold as death.

"Ah comrade - I was so hoping to get to you first," Richard said rolling his shoulders. He had no chance to get his bearing as BUcky started unloading hits to his face and body.

Steve suddenly appeared and helped Evelyn stand up and wrapped her arm around his shoulder as he rushed to the jet. Before Evelyn realized it she was on the ramp watching Bucky and Richard fight. Richard hadn't even noticed she was no longer there. He hit Bucky across the face and sent him tumbling backwards. Finally looking around Richard realized Evelyn was nowhere to be found and glared at the jet.

As he started towards the jet Bucky grabbed his foot trying to trip him and Richard furiously kicked him in the face.

"JAMES!" Evelyn screamed pushing against Steve's arms - shaking the jet.
